chrisper··on Red Flags in Software Developer Job Descriptions
I think that usually refers to that they take over a part of the required contribution or that it allows you to pay more into the pension.
chrisper··on Windows 10: New study shows Home edition users are baffled by updates
Yes. This drives me crazy as well.

What you have to do is use group policy to manage your firewall (secpol.msc) and tell it to ignore local firewall rules.

chrisper··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
Yes. But that article never worked for me.
chrisper··on Sunlight through glass does not provide Vitamin D
>in a relative world, everything is a compromise.

Modern men call it: "There is no free lunch!"

chrisper··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
You could start here:

https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Gigabit_Networks_...

>It is easily possible to saturate a 100 Mbps network using an OpenVPN tunnel. The throughput of the tunnel will be very close to the throughput of regular network interface. On gigabit networks and faster this is not so easy to achieve. This page explains how to increase the throughput of a VPN tunnel to near-linespeed for a 1 Gbps network.

I think the protocol just wasn't designed for such high speeds.

chrisper··on Ask HN: What VPN service are you currently using?
>but given that most of the sites and service you use aren't able to deliver 1Gbps to you directly

You would be surprised how wrong this statement is.

Especially if you are a gamer, almost any platform can max out a Gbit connection easily.

Besides at those speeds you start seeing all kinds of issues (like OpenVPN implementation being very inefficient).

chrisper··on FastMail loses customers, faces calls to move over anti-encryption laws
Why don't you switch to paid Gmail?
chrisper··on ASK HN: Has anyone adopted Chrome OS as their primary OS?
Market share of Chrome OS is significantly less.
chrisper··on Block Ads in Apps on Android
The time very much matters. 1-2% per hour is much different than 1-2% per day or per week or whatever.
chrisper··on Block Ads in Apps on Android
You forgot to say what timeframe.
chrisper··on The shady economics of ‘buy one, get one free’ deals
Also with these "deals" you often also have to ask yourself:

Are you buying it because it is cheap or are you buying it because you need it? Often people buy stuff they don't need because it is on sale "right now."

chrisper··on WireGuard for MacOS
It depends on what you want to protect. It is obviously great if you use a lot of public wifi for example.

It's also great if your government is spying on you.

Otherwise you just delegate the privacy issues from your ISP to the ISP of your output server.

Personally, there is no reason to run a VPN all time from your home connection.

chrisper··on WireGuard for MacOS
You only need root if you want to run it as a kernel module. Otherwise it will just run in userspace.
chrisper··on Reddit confirms $300M Series D led by China’s Tencent at $3B value
I tried that but I get FOMO. Like I feel like I get to discover so many interesting things (news about niche games etc) because of Reddit but at the same time I also hate it.
chrisper··on Reddit confirms $300M Series D led by China’s Tencent at $3B value
A lot of the moderators in Reddit are powerhungry or are marketing shills. Since it satisfies their needs I don't think they mind it being not paid.
chrisper··on Air Canada agents reveal overselling practices
No, European Airlines do this as well. But if you check in online, you have your seat.
chrisper··on A380 cancellations by Qantas raise new questions about the superjumbo's future
For long hauls I'd always recommend to upgrade to Premium Economy. It's not quite first class, but it's much better than regular economy imho.
chrisper··on Apple tells app developers to disclose or remove screen recording code
I think if the next iPhone will have USB-C, I will switch over from Android.

The general app quality on iOS seems to be much better than Android.

chrisper··on The Apple iPhone XR Review
Isn't there also a difference in Camera and other small features? Don't think it's just the screen that is different.
chrisper··on The Apple iPhone XR Review
How so? An OLED will always have better blacks than an LCD screen, which leads to better contrast, which leads to better picture quality (perceived at least).
chrisper··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
Sadly I feel like Reddit has become like a Facebook news feed.

That and the fact that now so many comments keep getting deleted and posts locked makes me wonder who the target audience is these days.

Also the overzealous moderators are annoying.

chrisper··on EU and Japan create world's biggest free trade zone
Amazon.de is a different company than amazon.com (by law at least)
chrisper··on U.S. Changes Visa Process for High-Skilled Workers
It's kind of weird that work experience can't replace the master degree in this case.
chrisper··on Boeing 787 Suffers Rare Dual Engine Failure on Landing
It doesn't at all. It's an explanation why it might happen. They never said that this behavior won't be fixed or changed. It's not blaming the pilots.
chrisper··on AMD Open Source Driver for Vulkan
Thanks. It's not easy to find information like this. How did you find it?
chrisper··on AMD Open Source Driver for Vulkan
It's not like I'll upgrade any time soon. A lot can happen in all those years! I'll see
chrisper··on AMD Open Source Driver for Vulkan
Yet I can still not read CPU core temperatures of my ryzen 2600 on Linux (5.0-rc2). I am not sure what is going on but I think next time I'll go with Intel again. I read this may be related to some NDA by AMD but not sure.
chrisper··on Lime scooters are causing some issues for Brisbane's vision impaired community
I can't stand those scooters. Many people drive with them without being careful to other traffic. Some of them just swerve around in bike lined etc
chrisper··on Company Update
I see. That makes sense. Thanks.
chrisper··on Company Update
Yes. That's exactly my point. The argument "people are saving the planet by just changing to electric" is not quite correct.
