cinbun8··on GDPR meant nothing: chat control ends privacy for the EU [video]
IDK man. I don't think everyone has access to that one.
cinbun8··on Open SWE by LangChain
It's a coding agent, for those wondering - https://blog.langchain.com/introducing-open-swe-an-open-sour...
cinbun8··on Anyone else tired of the AI hype?
There is reason to be worried and excited. I would say web3 and crypto were hype. The VCs bet on it heavily and tried to make it happen, but it didn't.

AI is still in its early stages and is already disrupting jobs and work. Many enterprises that were laggards in technology adoption are now embracing AI use cases. Every week breaks an assumption that was made in the previous one. It's all tiring and demanding to keep up. Perhaps there is some hype surrounding agents and the extent to which they can deliver, but the big bet is that upcoming models will outperform their predecessors.

From a b2b perspective, agents are already making a difference in enterprises. So there's substance behind the hype.

cinbun8··on Generative AI coding tools and agents do not work for me
As someone who heavily utilizes AI for writing code, I disagree with all the points listed. AI is faster, a multiplier, and in many instances, the equivalent of an intern. Perhaps the code it writes is not like the code written by humans, but it serves as a force multiplier. Cursor makes $500 million for a reason.
cinbun8··on I started with a SQL question. He said "that's a dumb question."
Or maybe... don't be a brilliant jerk
cinbun8··on Ask HN: Tired of all the AI, what other cool tech is out there?
Human confirmed!
cinbun8··on Notion Mail is out
I would not use this without a SOC 2 Type 2 compliance at the very least. Especially when email is involved and Notion-mail reads your from, to, body and saves it in its data centers. The compliance information is also contradictory. The webpage says mail is SOC 2 Type 1 compliant, while the FAQ says

"Is Notion Mail SOC 2 compliant?"

"While Notion Mail is not currently SOC 2 compliant, we expect Notion Mail to be SOC 2 Type I compliant by GA launch."

Either the FAQ or the landing page needs an update.

cinbun8··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
From an outsider’s perspective, it’s difficult to discern any coherent U.S. strategy—assuming one even exists. One day it’s a 145% tariff on China. The next, it’s “Well, it’s still 145%, but Apple and Nvidia are exempted because their stock prices might take a hit.” Then comes a 90-day pause, adding to the confusion.

It’s not clear whether Jamieson Greer is actually steering this, or if any of it was thoroughly thought through.

cinbun8··on I Quit Google Search for AI–and I'm Not Going Back
Citations and reasoning models eliminate this to a fair degree. Deep research cites most of its conclusions. We may not be fully there yet, but we're getting there.
cinbun8··on I Quit Google Search for AI–and I'm Not Going Back
Doesn't sound like the LLM was the problem here. By your own definition, you are lazy.
cinbun8··on Modos Paper Monitor Pre-Launch on Crowd Supply
From looking at the demo, you might still have glare issues. You want this display if you'd like one that goes easy on your eyes.
cinbun8··on Leadership is a hell of a drug
This person sounds like an energy vampire. I don't disagree with some of the points, but the way they're conveyed and the writing style make it hard to empathize with them.

It's also easy to jump on the "management sucks" bandwagon.

cinbun8··on Microservices – State of Developer Ecosystem 2022 (JetBrains)
This is a sub-section of the survey, shown only to people who responded with `Yes` to the `Do you develop microservices?` question.

I still don't understand how 19% of respondents picked 'Monolith' as a system design approach. Perhaps they coexist?

cinbun8··on Elon isn't serious and it's time to move on
Italy offered a Colosseum apparently - https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1691541362079068162?s=20
cinbun8··on Farmer ordered to pay $CAD82k after confusion over meaning of thumbs-up emoji
Found the filing: https://www.canlii.org/en/sk/skkb/doc/2023/2023skkb116/2023s...

It's pretty funny. The thumbs up was accepted by the court as an electronic signature.

MR. JORDAAN: Objection. My client is not an expert in emojis.

MR. MARSCHAL: Okay.

Q.MR. MARSCHAL:But he does send emojis, correct?

A.Yes.

cinbun8··on Let's have a chat about Java licensing, says unsolicited Oracle email
Companies using the OpenJDK should be fine[1]. If you're using the OracleJDK with LTS though, you'll need to pay up.

I wonder how Oracle knows which contacts to email. Does the Oracle Java SE phone home?

cinbun8··on Will boiling water ruin green tea?
I sorta knew this from experience, that high temperature would make the tea bitter. But why is this on HN?
cinbun8··on ChatGPT is rendering other people's chat history in the sidebar
Seems to be fine for me
cinbun8··on Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work
They've really put the summarisation and Whisper capabilities to good use!

"Unlock productivity. We all want to focus on the 20% of our work that really matters, but 80% of our time is consumed with busywork that bogs us down. Copilot lightens the load. From summarizing long email threads to quickly drafting suggested replies, Copilot in Outlook helps you clear your inbox in minutes, not hours. And every meeting is a productive meeting with Copilot in Teams. It can summarize key discussion points — including who said what and where people are aligned and where they disagree — and suggest action items, all in real time during a meeting. And with Copilot in Power Platform, anyone can automate repetitive tasks, create chatbots and go from idea to working app in minutes."

cinbun8··on YC: We ask for depositors to be made whole
That's not what happened though. SVB did not gamble with the money.
cinbun8··on A Docker footgun led to a vandal deleting NewsBlur's MongoDB database (2021)
Nice read. It might be a good idea to also lock a user account after N failed password attempts. Mongo does not seem to support that off the shelf - https://www.mongodb.com/community/forums/t/limit-failed-logi...

Neither do other databases like PG, curiously enough. The recommendation seems to be to link to LDAP or use authentication hooks.

Or perhaps use client and server certificates for increased security - https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/ssl-tcp.html#SSL-SER...

cinbun8··on Twitter has fired more software engineers
Maybe it's self selecting, like those Nigerian scams
cinbun8··on ClickHouse Cloud is now in Public Beta
If you don't know what a column oriented DB is, that page is probably not for you.
cinbun8··on Israeli rules say West Bank visitors must declare love interest
Perhaps you can tell us how it was different?
cinbun8··on SF couple fined $1,500 and banned from parking their car on own property
I would still be outraged, and I'm not even in SF
cinbun8··on Show HN: Vantage Autopilot – Save on AWS EC2 Costs
> This seems like something you could build over a weekend

We look forward to seeing your "Show HN" with a competing product next Tuesday. Good luck.

cinbun8··on We don’t use a staging environment
This strategy won't scale beyond a very small team and codebase. The reasons mentioned, such as parity, are worth fixing.
cinbun8··on ‘Don’t Weigh Me’ Cards Are Game-Changing for Doctors Appointments
It still is. No doctor / nurse weighs you for fun. They have better things to do while running a 12-16 hour shift.
cinbun8··on AWS Private 5G
I completely missed that
cinbun8··on AWS Private 5G
What's the business case for a service like this? Is there anyone on HN that would order this for example?
