I'm starting to use Sia (sia.tech) to backup some heavy files starting with data I can afford to loose (even if I'm quite confident in the tool).

cju··on Paris Geothermal Boom Brings Deep Drilling to Crowded Suburbs
4 months to go 1800m deep. It's now finished. Total cost of the project is 34M€ (11M€ just for the drilling).

cju··on Paris Geothermal Boom Brings Deep Drilling to Crowded Suburbs
I live nearby Bagneux, one of the cities mentioned in the article. People who are living near the drilling location are complaining a lot due to the noise and vibrations. It seems the drilling has to be performed continuously (24/7) so it's impossible to sleep or even live quietly. The company is paying hotel nights for many inhabitants.
cju··on Texas Hold'em Hand Strength, Visualized
It reminds me the "Temperature Maps" by Sho Sengoku in backgammon [1]. For a given move, it syntheses the equities (somehow probability of winning) for each possible dice roll of the opponent on next turn. It allows among other thing to see how dependent of luck you be after a move (by looking at the contrast between squares).

cju··on The Beautiful Geometry of 18th-Century Forts
In France, many forts has been build by a military engineer named Vauban[1] in the 17th century. His life is highly impressive. He worked a lot on fortifications and breaking of sieges. Outside of military building, he has been a scientist and an economist with modern views on taxes.

cju··on Nimrod for C programmers
I recommend to those who tried only the 0.9.2 version to check the new 0.9.4 as there has been a lot of improvements (Release note: http://nimrod-lang.org/news.html#Z2014-04-21-version-0-9-4-r...).

cju··on Tarsnap price cut
Using options --dry-run and --print-stats would probably give you this information

''Don't really create an archive; just simulate doing so. The list of paths added to an archive (if the -v option is used) and statistics printed (if the --print-stats option is used) will be identical to if tarsnap is run without the --dry-run option.''

cju··on Clojure 1.6 released
It's similar to the idea of pg in The Python paradox (http://www.paulgraham.com/pypar.html) when Python was not as mainstream as now.
cju··on AdaCore University
> I am not sure why, but this week I happened along Ada again (cannot remember why) and also stumbled upon AdaCore.

It can be because AdaCore was the main sponsor of the ERTS² Congress in Toulouse, France last week. ERTS² (Embedded Real Time Software and Systems)is one of the most important congress in Europe about embedded.

Ada have the image of an old language but with the last revision in 2012, it's a modern tool [2].
