cliffwarden··on The 'absolute magic' of Morse code that still connects people globally
Just in case anyone is interested in learning morse code or interested in amateur radio, this is a really cool gadget.

https://qrp-labs.com/Morserino

One of the nifty features is it has wifi so you can "talk" cw over the internet (vband), but also to a training "qso bot" as well

i'd love to see the code. very interesting
cliffwarden··on Ask HN: How to be productive without making lists?
Generally I keep two different lists. One is for things I have to do on at a specific time (generally by day). This is often work related things, appointments, etc

Then I have a list for “Someday Maybe”. The wording of this is important. At the moment I add the task it feels pretty important, but often that feeling fades. I purposefully let that list cook for a while and come back to it one a weekly basis. If the thing still seems exciting I’ll pick it up.

This is pretty vague and not exactly how I do things day to day, but the key points are: reframing some tasks as “someday” or “maybe”. That reduces guilt if I don’t end up doing them but even more importantly it reduces mental clutter. It’s on paper so I can forget about it for now and refocus on the moment

cliffwarden··on Ask HN: What mockups tool do you use?
Balsamiq for ui. Excalidraw for diagram type stuff. Looking forward to other peoples suggestions
cliffwarden··on Doug Engelbart’s 1968 demo
Often, i will go to science fiction (Rudy Rucker) to "drink from the well" and generate some inspiration for new ideas, projects, etc. This is one of the real-life sources that gives me that same feeling.

It's just amazing and awe inspiring to see something that felt truly "out of the future". You can probably draw lines to existing inventions and research but to me, this felt like he lived in the world where this technology already existed and was giving us a glimpse.

cliffwarden··on Where Do Great Ideas Come From?
I can't agree with this more. I've never been able to "think" my way into a good idea. I always have to daydream and have an idle mind about it for a while
cliffwarden··on Ask HN: How do I move forward after being laid off?
What would you be looking for as far as remote work? Folks here might have connections
cliffwarden··on Show HN: I built my own PM tool after trying Trello, Asana, ClickUp, etc.
Very polished, I'm impressed! It seems like everyone ends up recreating a PM or todo tool at some point. It makes me wonder if there could be a world where we have a standard protocol/api and then anyone can bring their own preferred interface?

cliffwarden··on Ask HN: Where can I find small companies to work for part-time?
Have you been self-employed before?
cliffwarden··on Why I'm using Fossil SCM instead of other source control systems (2016)
To add some detail here. The features it offers (tickets, wiki, chat, forums, etc) are stored within the repo, unlike github or gitlab where those things may be separate.

Basically, if you have the repo and the fossil binary you have everything. Is this better? I never saw a lot of advantages in my style of work, but i could see this being huge for someone who has intermittent connectivity. Or maybe someone who wants to use the ticket tracking, etc without setting up a separate server or public instance.

I just love that fossil exists and there is a diversity of opinion on how things can work.

cliffwarden··on There Is No CD Revival
I was pleasantly surprised recently with Merge Records. I bought a few lps and they came with digital downloads of mp3 and flac!
cliffwarden··on Gas pumps happen to be about as insecure as your typical router
A lot of them are configured by literally scanning settings. These "settings" barcodes are often left out in the open, or east to recreate. I used to have a "cheat sheet" when i managed scanners in a warehouse

cliffwarden··on Ask HN: What are your hobbies?
My hobby is hobbies! I'm notorious for picking up new hobbies all the time. For me the enjoyment is diving into something as a beginner and building up a basic mastery. Normally, at that point it get a little bored and move on. Granted, i do not feel like a master of anything i pick up, but i feel like i have a grasp of the basics and enough to more fully enjoy the topic. For example when i was really into photography i took it to the level of building my own dark room and developing my film/prints. For me its all about the learning process and not necessarily even the end result i care about.

Current obsessions - Leather working - Watching making / repair

Prior hobbies - kayaking - homebrew (beer) - making bread - lock picking - various electronics - photography - knitting - welding - every programming language ever - wood working

If you are interested in any of these i'm happy to chat you up

cliffwarden··on Ask HN: How do you cope with being interupted?
When you do allow yourself to be interrupted (answering a question, or whatever) just fully embrace the interruption. Nothing is worse (on either side) than only half paying attention. It's very obvious to the other party and can feel very rude.

For me, being able to handle interruptions and then refocus is something that can be strengthened with practice like many other skills. I used to be very much in the camp of trying to avoid distractions and interruptions, but over the years my strategy has changed. My pov now is that it will happen and it will happen at the most inconvenient time, so i try to keep my work in a state that it can retrace my steps easily and make it easier to "load my context" when I resume. Sometimes this is a unit test, a random comment or whatever notes i'm taking at the moment.

I'm really not a multi-tasker and i have horrible short-term memory, so I've pretty much always relied on leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for myself.

Also take advantage of being pulled away and coming back to a work in progress (finished or not). Sometimes, just a few minutes break and change your perspective slightly.

cliffwarden··on Ask HN: How do you repair books?
Not specifically repair, but this channel has some great content on book care and book binding. https://www.youtube.com/c/DASBookbinding/featured
