climb_stealth··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
Thank you for clarifying and thank you for looking after the rescues!

I don't remember where I read it, but there was an interesting case for pairing abandoned parrots with veterans and people suffering from PTSD. Both suffer in similar ways, and were able to reduce their struggles together.

Could have been Bessel van der Kolk who mentioned it.

climb_stealth··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
This must have changed at some point. It used to show popular videos in a private window.

You can still get a glimpse of what is out there by watching a specific video in a private window and looking at the recommendations.

climb_stealth··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
Luckily the recommendation system does work to some extent. I'm glad I don't get to see any of that stuff on my youtube. Opening the front page in a private view is a scary place of hyper-optimised drama and attention seeking.

It's scary imagining people getting sucked into that :/

climb_stealth··on VW is bringing physical buttons back to the dashboard with the ID. Polo EV
D'uh, thanks! That did not occur to me at all to be honest. But it does make sense.
climb_stealth··on VW is bringing physical buttons back to the dashboard with the ID. Polo EV
What does the leftmost button in your example do? The tall one with a drink on it.
climb_stealth··on Swapping SIM cards used to be easy, and then came eSIM
Except 4G/5G does not work properly in Australia. :(

It is some carrier configuration bullshit or something like that. There may be a way to make it work, but it did not look guaranteed after reading dozens of pages on forums on the topic. I ended up retuning the Sony I tried whilst I could still get a full refund.

Phones used to be exciting. Now it is just frustrating because all the good features are gone. Headphone jack, sd card, fingerprint sensor on back, unlockable bootloader.

climb_stealth··on NYC phone ban reveals some students can't read clocks
The future is now. I personally know someone who does that. It's a fancy watch that only gets worn sometimes. And it's an automatic so it needs to be moved for it to keep running. So when they wear it every few days it is completely out of sync and they can't be bothered to adjust the time.

It is purely an accessory and completely useless for telling the time.

No judgment, but it just seems silly.

Apparently the correct way to solve it is to store the watch in a cradle that keeps it moving perpetually.

climb_stealth··on Canada's Carney called out for 'utilizing' British spelling
What surprises me is that someone would consider cracking the big end of the egg. And have it sitting upside down in the egg cup?

Ludicrous! Absolutely ludicrous! :)

climb_stealth··on Ask HN: Is building a calm, non-gamified learning app a mistake?
Just want to say that I appreciate you giving it a good go!

I feel a bit of guilt reading it though. I followed your app from when you first announced it on hn. I liked the idea and still think it's great, I am in theory the target demographic of wanting to learn languages as a couple, and yet it didn't stick.

For what it's worth none of the other language apps stick either.

Maybe it's hard to compete with the heroin-like hyper-optimised attention-drain apps that left all sense of ethic and morals long behind :/

climb_stealth··on Claude CLI deleted my home directory and wiped my Mac
Oof, you are bringing out the big philosophical question there. Many people have wondered whether we are running in a simulation or not. So far inconclusive and not answerable unfortunately.

:)

climb_stealth··on Delivery robots take over Chicago sidewalks
God forbid someone would use their own two legs to walk and eat that burrito at the restaurant /s

The extend to which some people get food delivered is absurd. I'm sure there exceptions and reasons and everything, but seriously.

climb_stealth··on Screenshots from developers: 2002 vs. 2015 (2015)
Hah, If you ask my partner, I've been looking at the same screen for years and years
climb_stealth··on Bringing Sexy Back. Internet surveillance has killed eroticism
I think the t-shirt with the wolf howling at the moon is a bit of a stereotype. If you have watched the Simpsons, something the comic book store owner would wear.

Overweight, unkempt, awkward around women, and guaranteed zero attention from women.

climb_stealth··on The Fatal Trap UBI Boosters Keep Falling Into
I agree and disagree with you. These studies should be done with guaranteed payments for life. Otherwise it is just not representative.

I do believe that people would still work though. Personally I would like to do a useful job with real benefit to society, but the low pay makes it not feasible. I would still want to work part time at least instead of not at all.

climb_stealth··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
Thanks for mentioning it! Makes me glad to live a life out of the spotlight and to be generally ignorant of stuff like this going on. Would not want to be targeted like that :/
climb_stealth··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
My bad, I shouldn't have said tainted. Trustworthy is what I had in mind.

I moved my private repos to sr.ht ages ago because it was the open source, free software, ethical, longevitable approach. And stepping away from the mega corporations and everything going on with those.

I was wondering whether this was still the case.

climb_stealth··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
Holy shit this escalates completely. I had no idea any of this was going.

Is sr.ht tainted now or still a decent place to host code? I can't quite tell.

climb_stealth··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
Interesting! I did not realise this. Just checked and can't see it in that case either.

So, yeah, that's pretty bad.

climb_stealth··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
Hold on, there is a setting to switch to original audio. Just click the cog wheel on the video.

The outrage over this seems completely overblown. Do people not see the setting to switch audio?

climb_stealth··on Windows 10 refugees flock to Linux in what devs call their "biggest launch"
In my experience the linux way is finding things that don't work and, after not being able to fix them, deciding that you don't need really them after all.

Personally I focused on reducing the boot time when the suspend never worked properly.

climb_stealth··on Signal Protocol and Post-Quantum Ratchets
I did not know this but now that you mentioned it, it will forever bug me. I did notice that it plays very early when you make a call.
climb_stealth··on Pocket Casts, you altered the deal, so I will alter your app
Agreed. I would not have realised they were links if I had not read your comment.
climb_stealth··on Internal emails reveal Ticketmaster helped scalpers jack up prices, FTC says
Agreed. Some of the artists I like are in their sixties nowadays. Any show may literally be the last show to see. Especially in a remote country. So I'm willing to pay about any price I can afford. Still feel bad about it, though.
climb_stealth··on When Knowing Someone at Meta Is the Only Way to Break Out of "Content Jail"
Fastmail used to offer the option of depositing funds in advance. So I would always have at least a year worth of funds in the account. Unfortunately it's not possible anymore.

It's certainly my biggest worry about using them.

climb_stealth··on A failure of security systems at PayPal is causing concern for German banks
What, you don't remember random details from all this time ago? I got locked out of mine as well and the questions to restore were ridiculous. How the hell would I know what transactions I did 15 years ago? And other stupid things like that.

Gave up on it after a while and now try to avoid it as much as I can. Good riddance.

climb_stealth··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
Don't get me started. Every single app I search for on the play store gets a first sponsored result that is a completely different app. It is so utterly broken by design.
climb_stealth··on What Does One Billion Dollars Look Like?
Mindboggling, thank you. Right on that note is one of my favourite tweets on the internet:

> Have you ever considered the possibility that Jeff Bezos just works 130 billion times harder than you?

climb_stealth··on Samsung Removes Bootloader Unlocking with One UI 8
I really wanted a Sony phone as it ticked all the boxes. Headphone jack, SD card slot and bootloader unlock with LineageOS support. AFAIK no one else does that in current phones.

But the sad reality hit when there were all kinds of hurdles around getting 5G/4G working in Australia. Was not going to risk ~$900 dollars on a phone that could end up being a paperweight and returned it.

It's a sad state and makes me miss the good old days.

climb_stealth··on Samsung Removes Bootloader Unlocking with One UI 8
So you were actually successful in the end? I've given up on it.

With the time difference I had to do it at 3am or something ridiculous like that.

They have effectively disabled bootloader unlocking. They can kindly fuck off.

Compared to my previous Xiaomi, which required an account of a certain age and active phone use. But after that the unlocking just worked.

climb_stealth··on YouTube No Translation
I have not seen any auto-translations, even in for videos where others have complained about auto translations to the uploader.

Is this a US only feature? I hope I'm never going to see it because it sounds horrible.
