clippyplz··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
The difference is that Bittance loses only a few percent of their reserves and the dance continues. Gdox did ~70% of the daily volume for crypto and wrecked the entire ecosystem when they got 100% pwned. Maybe they've learned something!
clippyplz··on U.S. science agency moves to restrict foreign scientists from its labs
Surely it is? It would be a very different policy to say "anyone vaguely asian is banned from the lab, even if they're an American citizen"
clippyplz··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
I looked up "firefox addon usage" and this was the second result https://data.firefox.com/dashboard/usage-behavior

> over 40% of Firefox users have at least 1 installed add-on

clippyplz··on Show HN: OverType – A Markdown WYSIWYG editor that's just a textarea
WYSIWYG does not refer to the icons in the toolbar, but rather the text itself. This is not WYSIWYG because when I make something bold, I see a bunch of asterisks around it.

Still a cool project, but someone who does not understand markdown would wonder why pressing the heading button makes my text into a hashtag instead of making it bigger.

clippyplz··on I couldn't submit a PR, so I got hired and fixed it myself
This link is a 404 for me
clippyplz··on Do not download the app, use the website
> If you say that [PWAs] lack certain features, then you confirmed my point that it's due to active sabotage and denial of equal rights

How does that follow?

More generally, do you have any sources for your repeated claims of intentional sabotage? You make accusations of ignoring evidence but you have provided none - unless you're saying that apple has already poisoned the well and anything they do is suspect.

clippyplz··on I watched Gemini CLI hallucinate and delete my files
Glad to see someone else curious!

The problem that the author/LLM suggests happened would have resulted in a file or folder called `anuraag_xyz_project` existing in the desktop (being overwritten many times), but the command output shows no such file. I think that's the smoking gun.

Here's one missing piece - when Gemini ran `move * "..\anuraag_xyz project"` it thought (so did the LLM summary) that this would move all files and folders, but in fact this only moves top-level files, no directories. That's probably why after this command it "unexpectedly" found existing folders still there. That's why it then tries to manually move folders.

If the Gemini CLI was actually running the commands it says it was, then there should have been SOMETHING there at the end of all of that moving.

The Gemini CLI repeatedly insists throughout the conversation that "I can only see and interact with files and folders inside the project directory" (despite its apparent willingness to work around its tools and do otherwise), so I think you may be onto something. Not sure how that result in `move`ing files into the void though.

clippyplz··on The only time HN is this interested in Bitcoin is when there's a bubble (2017)
What? No, there are over 300 results when filtering by "last 6 months".
clippyplz··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
Try looking for something like "cia ads track" in your favorite search engine. The data comes with the ads, it's not a secret.
clippyplz··on Why DeepSeek is cheap at scale but expensive to run locally
Depends on who you think its competitors are - deepseek-chat ($0.27/M in; $1.10/M out) is twice as expensive as Gemini 2.5 Flash ($0.15; $0.60) but far cheaper than Claude Sonnet 4 ($3; $15).
clippyplz··on Which year: guess which year each photo was taken
Another for year + location https://whentaken.com/
clippyplz··on I asked police to send me their public surveillance footage of my car
I agree with what you're saying, but don't understand the point - if police officers in the US (about a million adult professionals) are abusing this data, wouldn't opening it up to ~300 million random people result in far more abuse than we're already seeing?
clippyplz··on The Wright brothers invented the airplane, right? Not if you're in Brazil
If they are the first to build an airplane that "actually worked", then why would it be inappropriate to say they invented an airplane?

It wouldn't be appropriate to say "they were responsible for 100% of the technological development and research that led to this machine" but if that's what "invented" means then nobody has ever invented anything.

clippyplz··on U.S. Government Disclosed 39 Zero-Day Vulnerabilities in 2023, First-Ever Report
That's an incredibly tough sell, particularly for software. Who is it that should "require" these specifications, and in what context? Can I still put my scrappy code on Github for anyone to look at? Am I breaking the law by unwittingly leaving in a bug?
clippyplz··on Goodbye, Slopify
Soulseek is great for this kind of thing.
clippyplz··on Apple mobile processors are now made in America by TSMC
Very much possible. Talking more generally about microelectronics - You can imagine the DoD is very interested in making sure they're not putting 'bad' chips in their military hardware, whether 'bad' means backdoored or merely counterfeit.

Manufacturing chips in the US means the DoD can investigate the acutal fabs and put cleared personnel on the manufacturing line to make sure nothing untoward is going on. Another strategy is to investigate the chip after it's been manufactured somewhere else and prove that it's the same chip you designed, but that's quite difficult.

If you're interested you can read up on the Trusted & Assured Microelectronics (T&AM) program.

Cool site! Just went to the /feedback page but there doesn't seem to be any way to actually submit feedback. Am I missing something?
clippyplz··on OpenScope Air Traffic Control Simulator
A couple of days ago there was a post for a site that would take you to hacker news on a totally random date; I had a look and ended up about 9 years ago. One of the posts I saw from then was this game! Many years indeed.
clippyplz··on Remote work doesn't seem to affect productivity, Fed study finds
There are good points here that would be nice to engage with in a fruitful discussion, but do you see how that's difficult to do when you lead with a provocative, emotionally charged phrase like

> I think this is a remarkably dysfunctional policy that only serves to placate mostly irrelevant middle managers who now look as useless as they are and has literally no other virtues.

clippyplz··on Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air window blowout
What are you hoping people are going to do with the links you posted?
clippyplz··on The Limits to Growth (1972)
What is going on with this website? A bunch of graphs with red arrows pointing to 1971, but what's the point being made? "wage productivity gap is increasing"? "we are consuming too much chicken"? "we're not giving out enough physics degrees"?

Not to mention that many of these charts use nominal instead of real numbers, rendering them entirely useless.

clippyplz··on How big is YouTube?
Engagement can be quite unrelated to what people like. A well crafted troll comment will draw tons of engagement, not because people like it.

clippyplz··on The right to use adblockers
I believe their point is that only sites that are tracking you are legally required to give you a choice.
clippyplz··on Apple has a memory problem and we're all paying for it
> I have a stack of old MacBooks I can’t use

For real? With prevalent cloud storage and cheap tiny external devices it's hard to believe they're totally useless.

Why not?
clippyplz··on Notes on making a multiplayer "doing nothing app"
I couldn't get scrolling to work on this site. Turns out all the content is on the left half; if you scroll while mousing over the right half it won't have any effect.

Posting this in case anyone else has the same confusion.
