why comment then?

welfare state enabled by cloud services/technology?

I'm not sure if you know less about europe or tech.

> Except France maybe.

sure

clows··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
> Can you give me an example of such advanced features?

macros, vba, onedrive/sharepoint/office integration

I think you highly underestimate the Microsoft Office ecosystem and the tight integration in enterprises.

> I'm sure this is trivial [...].

nope.

clows··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
I'm in the EU and (nearly) every company runs windows (on desktop). Especially in larger organizations (there's plenty of windows servers still).

I don't know why your definition is _the_ definition. A sociopath can be self aware.
clows··on IDEs we had 30 years ago
> I know my school has changed IDE recommendation 7 times in 22 years.

Just so I understand you correctly - am I using your comment

> That's cool, I didn't know you were most programmers.

correctly here?

clows··on IDEs we had 30 years ago
I only wanted to mention that certain IDEs still used today are not coming and going but have been around for decades and are still more or less the same (keybinding, etc).

Maybe I just don't understand your comment - even translated it still confuses me tbh. (I'm not a native speaker). Sorry if you feel offended I guess.

clows··on IDEs we had 30 years ago
My first java IDE was Visual Cafe by Symantec 1999 - and if I remember correctly I started using IDEA around 2002 (and still do - incl. Rider, etc).
clows··on IDEs we had 30 years ago
> There's a strange dance of IDEs coming and going [...]

Intellij IDEA 1.0 was released in 2001 - is still in active development - and as far as I know the keyboard shortcuts are still the same (depending on the configuration one chooses)

The first Microsoft Visual Studio release was in 1997. XCode was first released in 2003.

clows··on Oink's Pink Palace
Soulseek was pretty sweet - people would chat me up when downloading an album they shared and ask if I wanted anything else they hadn't ripped yet - or recommend something similar.

It was more like napster though and not torrent based iirc.

clows··on Oink's Pink Palace
I was barely on OiNK. Got an invite and I think 2 months later it shut down :/ But I used waffles quite a bit. (I didn't like what.cd for some reason)
clows··on Oink's Pink Palace

clows··on Farmland practices are driving bird population decline across Europe
> Most farmers now won't grow rapeseed, because the risk of making a huge financial loss is too high.

Do you have data to back that up? The only info I could find is along the lines of the article below.

https://www.biofuelsdigest.com/bdigest/2022/06/16/eu-rapesee...

> EU rapeseed crop 2022 projected at five-year high

clows··on Slightly Intelligent Home
> Most user groups have tons of reports of issues, they seem to need to fuss with it every update,

Tons of users with tons of different integrations means tons of issue. That is true I suppose.

I have a very simple Homeassistant setup with a few different zigbee lights and sensors. It has it's issues but 98% of the time it works just fine. The 2% that are frustrating are issues with zigbee connectivity but homeassistant works pretty well. I'm still not a fan of the yaml configuration but that is being worked on.

> lots it can burn out some SD cards.

more of a hardware issue (raspberry pi) than a software issue.

I run it on an intel nuc and have no issues with SD cards.

clows··on Distributed Actors in Swift
I read about the distributed actors and my first thought was "a semi standalone headset that needs to communicate with the phone and/or watch" could probably benefit from this.
clows··on Farm vehicles approaching weights of sauropods exceed limits for soil function
https://electrek.co/2021/12/15/john-deere-buys-kreisel-elect... makes me think John Deere is very much looking into electrification.

It seems people (outside the agriculture industry) underestimate what todays tractors (and even more so harvesters, etc) can do and how much power that requires. Harvesters running 12-24 hours a day for days or weeks seem way out of reach of what the current battery technology can accomplish.

I'd bet on hydrogen engines (at least in the next 5-10 years) for larger machines.

On the other hand tractors are multipurpose tools and it highly depends on what it will be used for. If the tractor is only expected to run a few hours a day then batteries might actually work

clows··on Seven Years of Factorio Friday Facts (2020)
I've played a few hundred hours of factorio, so by no means a _lot_ but I've launched quite a few rockets and "finished" the game a few times.

Depending on how long you played you might have missed out on the part that's the most fun (for me at least) - the later/end game.

Once you have bots the game changes a lot and you stop building stuff yourself and let bots build stuff for you. Once you have a few hundred bots (and resources) you can build/destroy/rebuild/scale up huge parts of the factory.

The starting factory is usually abandoned but a megabase can be a beast of it's own with constantly tweaking bottlenecks - which can be quite a lot of fun (or it is for me at least)

clows··on How Microsoft crushed Slack
Same anecdata here (EU) - Kids use Teams for distance learning, pretty much every larger company uses teams (and to some extend zoom) due to the Covid situation.

Hardly anyone even knows slack exists. Everyone knows and uses teams.

clows··on We Need a Nuclear New Deal, Not a Green New Deal
As long as Nuclear Power costs don't include the long term waste storage it's dishonest about the real costs (just like the oil industry).

Also - current nuclear power plants need cold water for cooling - france had to turn of plants due to heat [1].
