cma··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
Because human trials are so expensive that will be all the more reason to pre-screen with AI, like we already do with traditional simulations and things like proteome-wide off-target profiling.

There's no regulation on not doing a trial because your oracle machine told you it was an expensive dead end.

cma··on US designates helium as a critical material
If helium prices are raised by this won't that lower the threshold where it is considered a waste gas?
cma··on Anthropic S-1
If someone just way outcompetes them it's possible they sell their commitments to the winner and still do ok.
cma··on OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud
>Kind of like how xAI started hosting anthropic workloads with colossus cluster.

Google has been hosting part of Anthropic's load long before that deal. They had a big degradation due to compiler bug for TPUs in an optimization they made to work around TPUs not being able sample from the logits efficiently.

cma··on Muse exposes users' personal and business secrets when they share conversations
You can have all the benefits of both if you use a different magic name for the domain--a random domain, no english from the chat--and then also have the unguessable url path. Expose nothing without valid unguessable stuff in the url.
cma··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
If it works for Polygon wouldn't they just pay the subscription?
cma··on Facebook now charging to post more than 2 links a month
If it is for that reason and not a money squeezing/enshittification thing, it seems like a big admission their feed algorithm doesn't work.
cma··on Gemini 4 Argon
A little over a year ago they were winning their first gold in an elite high school math competition. Have you not seen what they are doing in math now?
cma··on Auto Research: Integer multiplication below n log n
I don't believe that changes asymptotic worst case order complexity for multiplication of arbitrary sized integers on its own, naively applied. That's not the same as saying it doesn't provide any speedup to them.
cma··on AI models may soon self-replicate without access to data centers
There are going to be things like fully connected 4 machine 512GB Mac studio clusters outside of datacenters in less than a month.
cma··on Auto Research: Integer multiplication below n log n
Wouldn't it take an infinite lookup table to do this satisfying any two integers and still get an order-complexity speedup? The integers can be any size. You can't specify an arbitrarily variable sized lookup table in the normal formulation of these problems without computing the lookup table as part of the computation.
cma··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
There are chemical based emp bombs, NNEMPs, if the penetrate through to the inside and set that off it seems like it would be pretty effective on datacenters.
cma··on What should we tell our students?
Anyone else want their doctor to have access to LLMs? They need to verify, but to just cut them off from something with that much breadth seems insane.
cma··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
But you can't do it with their internal model that is the same or a successor to the one that solved the navier stokes millenium prize problem.

With 40% formalized they probably have a good idea of how many were found to have fatal issues in the formalization attempt, and they hired some mathematicians to verify some of them, especially the big headline ones.

cma··on OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers
Many of the statements were already there and looked over by the community in lean prior to the work though, the statement can get formalized before the proof of it.
cma··on Claude Code’s suggested message feature: I think the real customer is the model
From the subscription plans Claude code consumes the same usage as the chat, and offers the same unsubsidized usage credits, which is close to billing per token.

If you read the model specs, they have a maximum output length. If you are running into that it might simply be that you are seeing the difference with a harness that can allow it to take another turn automatically and build up the output in a file vs the chat which may not be able to, though they do get some tools there.

The response output length limit includes the thinking tokens.

cma··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
What if we just discovered an alien artifact with the next 200 years of math? I can see arguments to throw it away for safety, who knows if the aliens are getting us to nuke ourselves or whatever, but throw it away so a few hundred/thousand of the most elite thinking humans can have the joy of credit for discovering each thing?
cma··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
Trying to slow down this for the joy of discovery is a deeply anti-intellectual position. I think that position is similar to when everyday people get mad about the minor spending on the NSF, picking apart people who study beetles on Fox News with no context etc.

There are real safety concerns with AI that can be made very convincingly though.

cma··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
Spintronics

"Whereas traditional electronics are based on control of charge carriers (n- or p-type), practical magnetic semiconductors would also allow control of quantum spin state (up or down). "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_semiconductor

That page lists a bunch of other stuff too.

cma··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
That's the setting to let it read your messages if you don't want to give it full disk access. If you give it full disk access wouldn't that supersede it unless you don't store your messages on the disk?
cma··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
Magnets out of multiple materials, or magnetic semiconductors at room temperature?

Wikipedia seems to say it is new, assuming this one has "robust" coexistence of the properties the framing would be important and not just thrown in there to trick people into thinking it was about superconductors:

> To date, GaMnAs remains the only semiconductor material with robust coexistence of ferromagnetism persisting up to rather high Curie temperatures around 100–200 K.

If there is an important combination of material properties that previously was only available at cryogenic temps, a room temp version is significant since you don't need cryogenic cooling to take advantage of it.

cma··on What's the future for pure math research in the age of AI?
For one thing, every topic can be explained with motion graphics offering another 1 or 2 dimensions (time and for the 3d stuff that is hard to see structure of in static 2d, plus things like vr will allow more direct depth perception and different views) than a typical blackboard lecture.

On Proof and Progress in Mathematics talks about how much gets lost of the geometric understanding when translated to a paper. The kinds of things many mathematicians visualize in their head will be much easier to transmit.

I don't know if that is enough to offset the other affects, but learning and transmitting the understanding should be able to get much easier for a lot of people in principle.

cma··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague
Source on first patients being WIV workers? I think there was a US intelligence report that claimed several fell ill in Nov., some with incompatible symptoms, and with claims from WIV they didn't test positive for antibodies (not saying take those at face value). There's also the wet market and the sampling done in gutters around the different stalls and a whole competing story there, which is also the kind of scenario in the 2002 SARS outbreak.
cma··on Homa: The end of TCP for AI clusters [video]
Google TPUs use optically routable fibers like circuit switching to be able to change the whole topology of the setup depending on training load/matrix dimensions.
cma··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
When reading on Kindle for Android on a plane etc. I use Wear Mouse to do it from my watch. I'm not sure if it can pair to kindle devices though.
cma··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
I remember the OSX animated wallpaper update (that updated lighting as the time of day changed or something) eating up like 10-15% of my macbook air's small drive. After removal they would re-add themselves every update as important protected system files.
cma··on Sea Monkeys Show Scientists How to Rewrite a Rule of Turbulence
It would have been awesome if this was what helped craft the navier stokes blow up. The maximizing shrimp welfare wing of the rationalists/EAs might have had been put into a crisis though. Study the shrimp in lab conditions to only need weaker AI to solve our hardest problems, or maximize their happiness with the whole sea monkey catalog of accessories?
cma··on City building games have a Soul Problem pt.2
Most 60fps games with real-time cutscenes do switch to 30fps for them for twice the frame budget, so maybe it wasn't a completely out there idea and did have some basis in reality with simplified game-style cloth sim. Could be that it was normally a bit too expensive for the team player counts but was at least on the edge of feasible with twice the budget.
cma··on Religious scholars met with Anthropic
Doesn't that kind of make sense for WeWork? From brutal corporate POV maybe should have been at sales and long term satisfaction/retention thing but the wellbeing framing was probably still aiming at enough overlapping things. I would think interior design would have been a big part of their business and brand if the rest of the business financials had made actually worked out.
