I will never work to make money for someone else ever again

A lisper and a CSSer workting together towards a common goal. I love to see it
cmdialog··on Arc Will Change the Way You Work on the Web
I wanted to enjoy arc but it's very slow and does some small weird things that I really don't like. It's going to take a lot of work to get me off of Firefox for my daily.

I wonder how large the Venn overlap is for people who think IP is good and people who don't think hip hop is "real music"?
cmdialog··on Why I’m using a keyboard phone in 2023
I have the current version on the site, Pinephone Beta Edition, and it is too large for the keyboard case
cmdialog··on Why I’m using a keyboard phone in 2023
Yeah I got a Pinephone for this exact peripheral and it doesn't even correctly fit the size of the phone. Not universal for all their phones so beware.
cmdialog··on Why I’m using a keyboard phone in 2023
Whatever you do, avoid the Planet Computer phones. They look amazing, but my experience with the company has been incredibly shady and I am not alone in this. It's a shame too because they really do look so good. More companies ought to make a similar offering.
cmdialog··on What is NMAP and how to use it? (2020)
Yeah it's such an old meme to say "Just read the man page" but there are a non-zero amount of completely useless man pages and tldr is a great alternative.
cmdialog··on Can the SVB crisis be solved in the longer run?
Not a real crisis.
cmdialog··on Ask HN: How do I make peace with being a dud?
Personally I'm not sure why anyone would want to be an entrepreneur, nor do I think it is a respectable position to be in necessarily. There are plenty of other things to do to live a respectable life. But I ask, respectable to whom? Do you want to be famous for something? Again, personally, I think this goal is going to cause you more harm than good.

I am not a great programmer, or a great designer, or a great musician, or artist. I'm not particularly great at anything I do if I'm being honest. And I've struggled with childhood trauma, substance abuse, various other manifestations of mental unwellness, and it's frequently very difficult. However, I have come to realize that there is no point lamenting this. Just play what you have, think as creatively as you are able, care about yourself, and get into something stable enough to allow you more freedom of thought.

Hopefully this isn't too corny, but you aren't alone and all the time there are people somehow managing to overcome their terrible odds. Also if you are a drinker, stop drinking at once.

Modern ones do, old ones do not
cmdialog··on An end to typographic widows on the web
Just stay in the back-end. Then you don't have to deal with these problems. Seems like you are having an opinion on an issue that doesn't really concern you for a reason that I can't seem to identify. Would you care to elaborate on why you care about the CSS typography spec?
cmdialog··on All you may need is HTML
I understand this and that's all well and good. Many (but not enough) offer "print" versions of pages, which could and should be translated to "text only" versions of pages. This isn't my issue. My issue is these <redacted> imagining that the web outright doesn't need design at all and that CSS is a terrible waste. And to me this is just about the most dull opinion on the subject that I can think of.
cmdialog··on Brazil seizing Flipper Zero shipments to prevent use in crime
Just because you aren't clever enough to use it as a hacking tool doesn't also mean that others aren't. You can easily do basic things like snatch NFC data. Or duplicate the RF transmit signal for someone else's garage doors. I think if you exercise a little imagination you can see how it could be used nefariously.

And even still I would never support banning the device.

cmdialog··on All you may need is HTML
It's great that you figured out how to do it, congrats. A true computer guy
cmdialog··on All you may need is HTML
Why are you even browsing websites that have any design then? Why are you even browsing in anything other than lynx? Please spare me seeing that ideologically boring site again

Like I can barely imagine what your house might look like. Just like a purely functional weathered hovel with the absolutely barest essentials. A perfect prison cell

cmdialog··on All you may need is HTML
Sounds like you ought to be doing the Richard Stallman approach to reading webpages and not commenting on whether or not CSS and design is needed. Back to the terminal with ye
cmdialog··on All you may need is HTML
It's very funny that you seem to think reading code and reading a website are the exact same type of activities, and the same type of reading. They are not.

And I don't know where you've been for the last 30 some years, but the web is not a text only format, and the reason HTML was invented was specifically to be able to create a designed space where text can actually make sense and is not a gigantic wall of impossibly small black on white text.

cmdialog··on All you may need is HTML
I really dodged a bullet there huh? Since that isn't my idea of a "good" site necessarily. But if your idea of a "good" site is all function and no form, then maybe stick to designing abstract interfaces and not things actual people have to see.
cmdialog··on All you may need is HTML
In my personal, obviously anecdotal, experience it's always the "technical" guys who think things like this. This is why we have UI/UX teams and we don't let programmers create visual interfaces.

cmdialog··on DOJ Preps Antitrust Suit to Block Adobe’s $20B Figma Deal
Adobe Suite is always going to be around, no doubt, but you also have viable alternatives for the day to day work, and then you use Adobe stuff when you have to, for a client that requires it for instance.

Prior to moving to Figma 100% of the time, my current agency, and prior agency, were using Sketch. Adobe products were secondary. Others in my field have reported largely the same. Most of the time people simply don't want to change what's familiar and works, regardless of how much they are paying or who they are paying.

cmdialog··on DOJ Preps Antitrust Suit to Block Adobe’s $20B Figma Deal
I remember when Dreamweaver was Allaire Homesite, and was then purchased by Macromedia for their suite. Macromedia didn't do such a great job with it either in my opinion.
cmdialog··on DOJ Preps Antitrust Suit to Block Adobe’s $20B Figma Deal
Not only do they have a subscription model, but if you get their biggest single user package, which is ~$54/mo, they charge you ~$300 early cancellation fee. This is insane to me and is the main reason why I personally dumped them for my professional use.
cmdialog··on DOJ Preps Antitrust Suit to Block Adobe’s $20B Figma Deal
A lot of designers are already abandoning Adobe because they are tired of their garbage. Many of my peers have turned to Serif Affinity apps as Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign replacements and they do an incredible job. Nobody cares about Adobe on iPads, most artists are reaching for Procreate. Most of the issues involve sharing of files since Adobe has such a large share and their file types are proprietary.

There are alternatives out there and Figma has a huge grip on web design among other things. Adobe has nothing good for web design. Nobody wants to use XD.

So you can see that there is already strong push away from Adobe. I don't know if Figma is going to eat Adobe's lunch in the next couple years, but they will be poised to be competitive.

cmdialog··on ChatGPT launches boom in AI-written e-books on Amazon
If you (royal you) want to pass off AI prompting as equal to real human expressions of pain, love, anger, et al. you are free to do so. Nobody is stopping you!

Edit: Actually, I would even go so far as to say that the prompt itself, that you a person wrote, to generate whatever, is the real artistic expression. Don't even AI require output!

cmdialog··on ChatGPT launches boom in AI-written e-books on Amazon
Some nerd on here called it a human "stranglehold" on creativity and art and it's one of the funniest most brain-dead things I have read about AI. It's like so many of these programmers out here can only see programs and tech, and have completely lost touch with their humanity. Another even went so far as to say that, given enough billions of dollars, AI will be churning out art as good as anything fine arts. It's an unbelievably funny take

cmdialog··on AI won’t make artists redundant – thanks to information theory
You seem to be playing a game of chess here that I am not interested in playing, but there really isn't anything you've said that is particularly convincing. I'm open to change my tune. Maybe prompting actually is exactly the same as writing a poem for the woman you love, or writing a song after your mother has died. Someday, after billions of dollars are invested in tech, these things will be equal.
