cmer··on Darkrealms BBS
I used to connect to that exact BBS over dialup in the early 90s. I'm old.
cmer··on Rails Needs New Governance
DHH and Tobi are far right? Give me a break!
cmer··on Show HN: Claude Composer
This is pretty epic! This should come standard with Claude Code. Thanks for this! Now going to bed, and will wake up to a brand new feature :)
cmer··on Show HN: I’ve made a cheaper SEO research tool
Very nice! Awesome landing page!

FYI, the `www` version of your domain doesn't resolve. You might want to add a redirect.

cmer··on Open Sourcing DOS 4
I liked changing the copyright company name to my own name. Made me feel like such a boss.
cmer··on Tell HN: Bypass Paywalls repository is gone
I happen to have downloaded the master branch at 9am this morning. Here's a torrent: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:92042e65d1b38cd5d97c29baa4d0c9e2af46f355&dn=bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean-master.zip
cmer··on Increasing QUIC and UDP Throughput over Tailscale
Off-topic: Tailscale seems like such a perfect acquisition target for Cloudflare. It seems like there's perfect product and culture alignment. Amirite?
cmer··on Coolify – Self-Hosting with Superpowers
Nice UI, easier to use and more flexible, deploys Docker containers.
cmer··on Show HN: An open-source, collaborative, WYSIWYG Markdown editor
I went down that rabbit hole as well, and I also settled on Outline for our business. We haven't widely deployed it yet, but it's been working great during our limited testing. It is sorely missing robust embeds, however!
cmer··on Show HN: An open-source, collaborative, WYSIWYG Markdown editor
It looks beautiful and is very user friendly. Congrats!
cmer··on We will be shutting down neeva.com
Same here. I was a customer for a long time and loved the service, but having to watch my “search spend” and constantly going over limits is really annoying. I ended up cancelling but I really wish I didn’t.

Personally I’d like to see an ad-supported, or partially ad-supported version that isn’t evil.

The way Google started out with relevant ads in the sidebar or a single relevant ad at the top is acceptable in my opinion if it means bring the cost way down for the end user and ensuring sustainability for the company.

I don’t think asking users to shell out $10, $20, $30 per month for search is a viable long term model that’ll ever appeal to the masses.

cmer··on Ask HN: What are some of the best ChatGPT Clients out there?
TypingMind is quite good. There's a MacOS wrapper, or you could wrap it into an executable for Windows yourself.

cmer··on We’re no longer sunsetting the free team plan
Docker is awesome tech but a terrible company with a terrible business model. I don’t see them surviving long term. Especially with the way they operate and alienate people.
cmer··on Ask HN: What are some of your “buy it for life” purchases?
High end loudspeakers for music/home theatre.

Turns out, speaker tech evolves pretty slowly. I bought a pretty high end set 15 years ago and it’s still miles ahead of most of what’s currently on the market. I don’t expect to change them for another 30 years.

The brand I bought is Monitor Audio. https://www.monitoraudio.com/

cmer··on Docker 2.0 went from $11M to $135M in 2 years
They have LONG way to go before they can prove sustainable in the long run and justify their valuation.
cmer··on Docker 2.0 went from $11M to $135M in 2 years
The problem I see with their business model is that the technology has long been commoditized, and alternatives are often better. It's a pretty tough spot to be in.

Anecdotally, I use Colima on my Mac, and it is better than Docker Desktop in pretty much every way I can think of. I'm sure I'm not alone.

Generally, a company like Docker would sell support agreements (ie: how Red Hat does it), but selling support to developers rather than to support core infrastructure/production deployments probably wouldn't work. I hope they can figure it out and succeed.

cmer··on Apple CEO’s Pay Cut 40% in 2023 After Shareholder Feedback
He makes a ton of money, but if we look what he’s accomplished since he took the helm at Apple, I think it’s fair for him to be immensely compensated.

Many thought Apple was dead when Jobs passed. What Cook did is nothing short of phenomenal. I’d argue he did better than Jobs would have done.

cmer··on Auto-Tune Destroyed Popular Music
Rick Beato has one of the best music-related channels out there. His passion for music is contagious. I’ve been watching him for a few years and I couldn’t recommend it more.
cmer··on Ask HN: What was the Ruby community like, before Rails came out?
Tiny, mostly in Japan. Rails pretty much introduced Ruby to the world.
cmer··on Google's search is borderline useless these days – what alternatives exist?
Another +1 for Kagi here. It’s quite amazing.
cmer··on Not in a Million Years – 1Password
I agree. I think it was totally justified and well timed. I'm glad they came out explaining why they're different and better, and why they can be trusted.

What's pretty tacky is how LastPass is lying, or at least misleading when pretending that LP master passwords cannot be cracked.

cmer··on Pixelmator Pro gets a magical, AI‑powered Deband feature
How do Pixelmator Pro vs Affinity Photo compare these days?
cmer··on Ask HN: What is the most expensive startup failure?
Oh I made a (relative) killing with it too. I was running it 24/7 on multiple computers with bots to simulate activity. The fact that they didn’t realize that no human being can be awake 24/7 baffles me.
cmer··on Judge finds no rights violations in FBI seizure Beverly Hills safe-deposit boxes
I guess "not your keys, not your coins" also applies for safe-deposit boxes.
cmer··on Zuckerberg’s empire collapses
This is what happened at Uber, and I think ultimately it was good for the company.

I agree with you that Zuck should walk away and the company should bring new leadership that can change the image and culture of the company.

cmer··on Jack Dorsey Unveils Bluesky Social
Jack and Elon seem to be good friends. Elon clearly knew this was coming and still made a bid for Twitter. Could Elon be planning to bring Twitter to Bluesky? It seems crazy, but you never know.
cmer··on Shortcat – Manipulate macOS masterfully, minus the mouse
So I’ve been using Shortcat for a couple of days and I changed my mind. I think it’s superior to Superkey in almost every way. But I do like how Superkey points to the target. It’d be a great feature to add. Thanks for your great work!
cmer··on Shortcat – Manipulate macOS masterfully, minus the mouse
I just tried both. I like how Superkey works better (ie: it points to what you're about to click) but it couldn't find a a LOT of text on the screen making it not very useful. I'm not sure if there's an issue on my end or what.
cmer··on Apple gets $19M fine in Brazil for not selling iPhones with charger
This seems like an easy problem to solve for Apple.

Just sell the iPhone for $30 more, and give people the option to not buy a charger with their phone for a $30 discount. Adds up to the same thing, but instead of paying extra for the charger, you get a discount if you don't take it in the name of "saving the environment".

cmer··on Use NextDNS everywhere you use Tailscale
That was exactly my reaction. Seems like some kind of publicity stunt by both companies.
