ShowHN - “this doesn’t work if JavaScript is disabled” or “you should explain this product better I don’t want it”
Any hardware device: “I’ve noticed declining quality because the space bar is a very specific type of plastic now” or “I can’t even ssh into this. I miss the days when I could ssh into my shoelaces”
But there are also just insane corners of knowledge where there isn’t a lowest common denominator and it’s pretty interesting stuff.
When I do know about a given topic I don’t have to scroll TOO far to find an opinion I agree with, and sometimes an argument I hadn’t come across that changes my view.
I wouldn’t have considered running my Java or python on wasm because it’s all server side… that’s just what it does… but the single execution environment with sandboxing is very interesting.
I definitely need a wasm crash course
average tenure at last 4 jobs or about 18 months?
Meaning that if I need to store specifically 2 addresses per user, don’t force it at the data layer… just make it an easy to swap validation and no literal limits elsewhere
Lefties gives me the impression I know your opinion and political views well before the end of your thought. It weakens an argument that I actually agree with… even though I’m a lefty.
While it’s fine that the annoying student who always corrected your grammar in school has enough extra cash to host this site, it’s a shame they still haven’t applied themselves to anything useful or interesting.
Something that HAS been very helpful to me (very surprisingly to me, who was very skeptical)… outlook’s “make it more concise” hints. Makes my emails waaay more concise and direct… I hate coming across as cocky or confident but they hit the nail on the head for me. Very helpful.
I’ve managed to separate myself from those parts and should be totally out the door soon!
I've yet to avoid any/all hurdles as a result, but I've yet to reach one I couldn't figure out how to get over either.
There is no perfect decision and the line between "ok" and "great" decisions is verrrrrrry fine.
I have never even considered downloading an app to text people… because I just text them. I’ve never understood or needed something different. I’m only now piecing together that this is an American thing though.
It’s tough to sell a feature that has no interface. A little too minority report arm flailing for me :)
Like a lot of premature optimization, it isn’t a problem until it is… but solutions aren’t unattainable.
Edit: I love vscode for c#
I’ve always had issues when people are using hours instead of points. The one time we properly used points on a team it went really well.
Quick edit: there is a cosmosdb emulator out there for windows. Last I looked (6 months ago?) there was not a Linux version (so no docker). If you’re in windows with wsl though not bad. Azure function core tools is also excellent for local dev.
They’re so vague that we find some people trying to decipher what someone living in in the 1700s would think about society today instead of updating our laws and principles to suit modern times.
Convoluted example: “Well smartphones didn’t exist in 1776, so you don’t have a right to pursue happiness on that medium”.
It’s so frustrating to see such partisan gridlock where the voice of the actual citizens are not heard and translated into laws and regulations.
I don’t know what my point really is, but I guess I’m saying it’s not so simple. We can’t boil it all down to a sentence or two.
I figured it would drive me nuts
