code_runner··on Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?
I mean this in the most genuinely curious and interested way possible.... but if you're doing geometry or trig... do you refer to it as "math" because you're just doing one type of mathematics? Is there every a point where it isn't plural. Is even 2+2=4 referred to as "maths".

I think its funny that terms like math v maths come about very organically and then after the fact everyone feels the need to back into a reasoning that was likely never there. Obviously neither are wrong because they are the "correct" way for a given dialect/region etc.

I think Elaine had a couple of apartments! Kramer helped her with the car next door once. Anything with puddy. I think the keys episode and of course sponge worthy!!
code_runner··on Infosec company pwned by 4chan user
jenkins is old and crusty, but it works and works well. if the UI for a build tool looks too fancy, my faith in it drops to 0 almost immediately.
code_runner··on MSFT is forcing Outlook and Teams to open links in Edge and IT admins are angry
I've been fortunate enough work with some people who REALLY wanted to automate and do things "right" but believed so whole heartedly in microsoft they anticipated every powershell release.... But I've seen more of the "click button in some wizard"
code_runner··on Google DeepMind CEO says some form of AGI possible in a few years
No matter how good am AI system gets we can rely on hacker news commenters highlighting hallucinations and saying “it’s only doing a simple <whatever> task” while totally ignoring whatever the system is actually capable of.

I agree that the goalposts will be moving for a long time (at least for some people)

This is my experience 100%

code_runner··on MSFT is forcing Outlook and Teams to open links in Edge and IT admins are angry
Microsoft’s stock price over the last 10 years has soared consistently. They have a lot of admins at small/medium companies very very willfully and loyally locked in to their ecosystem.

Microsoft does not care if they piss off most of these people because they not the ones signing the contracts and the lock-in is SO BAD that even if they piss off the right people, making any change is way more trouble than they are willing to deal with.

There is an entire side of the tech industry with admins who only want to learn powershell and still think you can’t “lock down” Linux and mac machines.

code_runner··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
If a whistleblower for these companies came out and said "For the last decade advanced research has been conducted on extraordinarily big LLMs and they won't even give the public a clue of what it is and how it works" you would get a combination of people that a) don't care and b) vilify the companies for not being open and having some demonstration of this secret super power.

"why can't joe-schmo get his hands on this technology", "how can we trust something we can't see and use", etc.

A lot of the capabilities of these models are emerging as people discover them. I truly don't believe you can make everyone happy with this tech, but isn't it better than the general public can at least explore it?

Do people think that nobody was ever going to try to improve on transformers with more compute, more data, and more parameters? We knew splitting an atom was going to cause a big boom.... thats not really how this tech emerged.

code_runner··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
I thought I would hate it but I really don’t mind mine. I like a few important buttons on the steering wheel but I always to look to remember which is which anyways.

Maybe I don’t drive far enough often enough. I honestly expected to hate it but it’s made almost no difference to me.

code_runner··on Sundar Pichai received $226M compensation, boosted by a triennial stock grant
if you’re earning sky high base comp + stock + benefits at these places you’re not working class. You are incredibly out of touch.
code_runner··on How to become a “designer who codes” (2019)
Designers who only design with no regard for what is possible, simple, etc have been the bane of my existence at previous employers.

I feel there is a VERY small set of shops where someone who just dumps a figma in your lap is useful.

The places I’ve seen that employ figma-is-my-only-output designers have just not been the right places for that skill set… but they always wish they were.

code_runner··on I worked at Google for -10 days
i'm not saying that the company has no responsibility... any company (even one as massive as google) can do better than an email and "so bad so sad".

However, regardless of economic factors, the process of quitting your job, selling your house, and most of your belongings is inherently risky! In this case its VERY high risk VERY high reward (at least in my estimation).

This definitely disadvantages people needing to relocate for that dream job, but we can't eliminate the risk of such a massive decision.

code_runner··on The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks
My home was built in the 1920s and I didn’t have any issues at all. Most neighbors with EVs also have chargers of some sort (similar age homes)
code_runner··on CFTC sues Binance and CEO Changpeng Zhao [pdf]
They operated in the US illegally right? Seems like they're the ones who screwed up here...
code_runner··on OpenAI tech gives Microsoft's Bing a boost in search battle with Google
hallucinations don't invalidate the product itself. I really hate to see this constant lazy refrain on here.

Its just like anything else. Trust but verify. Some will just trust, others never will... People probably over-trust the tech now, but just like wikipedia it will be approached a little more carefully as people learn its shortcomings.

Unless you're trying to perform open heart surgery or doing something intrinsically dangerous, its probably going to be additive. I wouldn't trust it to help me assemble a warp engine, but it may be able to give me some decent pointers for guitar technique or how to change my oil.

code_runner··on Cheating is All You Need
Given a large enough context window the need for fine tuning diminishes a little bit....

The cost of fine tuning these massive models is crazy right now. Fine tuning a smaller model can get you better performance for specific tasks in many cases. A lot of models are out there and totally free to adapt as needed via hugging face etc.

code_runner··on Cheating is All You Need
These models aren't capable of "doing" things. They can't necessarily calculate values etc. They can assemble text based (more or less) on statistical analysis of all their input data, and the are incredible at it... but if you ask what 2+2 is, its not doing math to get to 4.

They certainly can't deploy the code they generate etc.

code_runner··on Meta staffers reportedly spar with Mark Zuckerberg after mass layoffs
I really think people don’t even know why unionizing was a thing back in the day. Dangerous conditions, back breaking labor, endless hours, checks don’t clear, wage collusion…
code_runner··on Meta staffers reportedly spar with Mark Zuckerberg after mass layoffs
I’m not against unionizing necessarily, but these are layoffs. They happen, they suck. The benefits of working at these places are INSANE and unless you are working on content moderation the work isn’t physically taxing/destroying your body etc.

All of these CEOs are nuts. They are all greedy. The capitalism-to-the-max model is less than great… but those of us in software are treated amazingly well.

I agree these people should pay for their bad decisions but some of those decisions gave us equity grants, sky high salaries, and free meals. We can’t act like we haven’t benefited.

code_runner··on Twitter’s $42k-per-month API prices out nearly everyone
I’m not convinced Elon uses a lot of data in decisions like these. This might be just an arbitrary number to start negotiations from.
code_runner··on Twitter’s $42k-per-month API prices out nearly everyone
Like it or not the service being available is the payment. People clearly already want to use it
code_runner··on Twitter’s $42k-per-month API prices out nearly everyone
They’ll chase anything that makes money but if the ONLY source of money is our attention etc… that’s a worse spot right?
code_runner··on Twitter’s Revenue, Adjusted Earnings Fell About 40% in Month of December
A lot of severance but I don’t know how/where that is accounted for in stuff like this.

I assume you are correct thought and they are on that path.

code_runner··on Twitter’s Revenue, Adjusted Earnings Fell About 40% in Month of December
Ad based businesses are getting hit hard, which explains the desire to switch to subscription based models.

It doesn’t help when someone like Elon is chasing away advertisers with so much success.

With the layoffs they’ve had I wonder how net profit etc are going to shape up.

Since Twitter is now private a lot of numbers and finance info is going to be just hearsay and rumors… but things almost certainly can’t be going well.

code_runner··on Amazon is closing its cashierless stores in NYC, San Francisco and Seattle
Used one of these in an airport and it was fine. Felt like a novelty in that instance. I didn’t need a particular app but they did employ a person to explain and help… but it was a small enough booth he could’ve just been the cashier.

Probably 20-30 seconds faster than a normal place? I actually do like the idea in general but the implementation is ok at best and I didn’t even have to use yet-another-proprietary-app

code_runner··on AirPods causing tinnitus?
I love my AirPod pros and I just leave them in for hours with ANC on because they are comfy and it’s nice. Depends on the day if they get uncomfortable, but no issues here.

I’ve rarely had the “pressure” people talk about with ANC so maybe some are just predisposed somehow.

code_runner··on OpenAI's Foundry leaked pricing says a lot
Perhaps they mean that they operate in the open? They publish research, do open unrestricted beta tests etc.

I'm not sure they will necessarily live up to every definition of open you'll ever come up with, but its hardly the worst name in the tech space.

I'm still waiting for apple to deliver that tree to me. Facebook isn't a book AND the faces are almost always the smallest piece of content on a post (and some people's avatar isn't even their face!). Can't wait for my trip to the Amazon w/ Mr Bezos!
