codebook··on Gmail confidential mode
Do you really want to hand over your private PGP key to 3rd-party company? I never ever won't do that. If I will use PGP key for web email service, it is only when the service provider gives a way to communicate with my local machine so that the email text is SIGNED IN MY MACHINE and send it back to the email provider, then send to the recipients. For encryption, it can be done with public key of the recipients.
codebook··on Apple leaves Facebook offices in disarray after revoking app permissions
That's why I don't buy iPhone. But I keep blaiming so that I can use iPhone after it is resolved.
codebook··on Apple leaves Facebook offices in disarray after revoking app permissions
You don't understand what parent comment is saying ... it complains Apple's closed environment not allowing of any apps to be installed in anyone's phone unless app is downloaded from AppStore.
codebook··on Ending our Medium integration
I thought I am viewing different website from yours.

I am totally not satisfied hackernews website design and UI.

codebook··on Fed likely to keep raising rates
It won't happen within a few years. Boomers are still relatively healthy thanks to improved health care. If you count on that, then you should expect at least decades more.
codebook··on Free Cash to Fight Income Inequality? Stockton, CA Is First in US to Try
I thought it is talking "California City" but Stockton. https://goo.gl/maps/o8fp1f18Hf32
codebook··on Apple iMac Pro and Secure Storage
In these days, a lot of SSD makers have AES engine inside, it encrypts and decrypts on-the-fly. I don't understand the usage of AES in T2.
codebook··on Using GnuCash as a Freelancer to Track Finances and Prepare Taxes
It does support track the bank transactions. but I don't recommend it, since by entering transactions, you will realize how much you'd spend in your budget to the category.

You could do it on paper. and carry it in your pocket all the way. There's no difference in terms of managing transactions. But you could be easily loose the track of your budget in my opinion. YNAB helps you to keep remind the budget. That is the key for me to keep using YNAB.

codebook··on Using GnuCash as a Freelancer to Track Finances and Prepare Taxes
For item #3, it was awkward to me at first, since it was a little bit different concept in desktop app. But sooner, I realize that it was another aid to let people be aware of credit card spending more precisely.
codebook··on Using GnuCash as a Freelancer to Track Finances and Prepare Taxes
I am not a freelancer, but as a personal finance tool, I am using YNAB (You need a budget). I've been using it for many years from desktop app to current webapp. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for financial app if you are willing to do some manual work (putting every transaction by yourself).

Budget scheme in YNAB is far different than any other financial tool (personal area) in my opinion. And it has helped me a lot to keep me stable financially.

The price ($60 for desktop app, which no longer available, and $7/month) would be big barrier for new comer, though. It is worth to subscribe :)

codebook··on Elon Musk Deletes Own, SpaceX and Tesla Facebook Pages After #deletefacebook
I will not use any service that requires to specify my personal info such as real name, address, phones anymore unless it is tightly coupled to my offline life (financial, hiring). Even email can link many scattered info into one and guess who I am, but at least it gives a lot more complexity than one single source has my info.
codebook··on America’s technological hegemony is under threat from China
But I don't think they are going to be next Silicon Valley soon. Their wages are skyrocketing now. Average salaries of engineers in Beijing is around $50k now. (Maybe Shanghai be similar?) This might hold them back in my opinion.
codebook··on Dark Site Finder: tracking light pollution to find locations for stargazing
It's been a really long time when I saw the milkyway in the urban area. I don't expect I can see the milkyway in the city (maybe at the total blackout?), but I hope to see it within 30min drive. Also, I hope to see more nebular in my backyard w/ decent telecope, I only could see a few famous nebular such as Orion, Omega, faint veils...

Too bad for little people to be able to see that amazing nightsky .

codebook··on U.S. Nuclear Comeback Stalls as Two Reactors Are Abandoned
But those events were temporal and local. Nuclear failures are catastrophic and never ending events in many generations.
codebook··on Waze for Android Auto
Maybe it's not due to AA but Ford Sync. As far as I know, I only needs to connect my phone using USB regardless of whether the car is powered up or not.
codebook··on Cafeteria workers at Facebook struggle to make ends meet
But my family (4 persons) lived at apartment ($2600/month) in south bay with 90k/year income. 80k/year wasn't that bad if they pay more than $1000/month for that garage.
codebook··on Real estate site Redfin files for IPO
I am actively looking the house right now. And getting disappointed by Redfin these days. Previously it showed listed price for sold properties but now it has gone. Only sold price is shown. Not only this, but the property disappeared from MLS then re-listed with higher price tag doesn't show previously listed price.

Information should be transparent between seller and buyer but Redfin is leaning to seller side at this moment.

So, I am using Zillow more frequently than before.

codebook··on AMD Announces Ryzen Update: Enables Memory Clocks Up to DDR4-4000
Key is 'latency', If DDR interface speed is increased, normally latency "CL" is increased too.
codebook··on VHDL or Verilog?
Of course, systemverilog!
codebook··on VHDL or Verilog?
I have doubt that RISC-V will take visible portion of mobile/embedded core any time soon.

It was announced 6 years ago as far as I know but still only few commercial products have it inside.

Chiesel itself would be sunken together since it uses RISC-V as a ad.

codebook··on Testing the Windows Subsystem for Linux
Thanks for the info!. I will try again.
codebook··on Testing the Windows Subsystem for Linux
I gave up WSL after experiencing significant performance drop on GHC, Stackage. It was less than 1/10th of native for compiling Haskell code.
codebook··on Optane Memory – A bridge between DRAM and storage
The only thing could get from Optane is QD1 performance. It is impressive (5x faster than current gen NVMe SSD). But everything else is just soso compared to NVMe SSD.
codebook··on Optane Memory – A bridge between DRAM and storage
I don't think GP is talking about SATA SSD. Based on the performance, definitely it is PCIe NVMe SSD ( 960 IMO )
codebook··on Updates to our Google Voice apps
Even Android shows slow responses, the problem of Fi is that the ringing time is just TOO short. really short. maybe 15 seconds in total? So if my phone tries to connect wireless between TMO and SPRINT, it has really high chance to drop the call without any notice.

And Fi doesn't give any option to change ringing time. :(

codebook··on Updates to our Google Voice apps
As a Fi user (and the number was used from Google Voice), still Fi/Google Voice has problem that the phone doesn't ring even the call goes to Voicemail. Phone has no 'missed call' and suddenly voicemail is received.

This issue has been addressed a few years ago but still they never give any option to extend ringing time. What a poor service.
