codecamper··on Bitcoin miners in Abkhazia are causing blackouts in remote villages [video]
This is awesome. I just wish more governments would wake up to the fact that crypto does nothing beyond suck resources and warm the planet. If you want to bet on things that go up & down, there is the stock market where things go up and down 20%+ every single day.

Well then if we must choose between planet, and greaseballs, we'll choose the planet any day.
codecamper··on Bitcoin miners in Abkhazia are causing blackouts in remote villages [video]
You cannot move "underground" when you are sucking that much power.

The government did what they should have done, and what all governments should have done a long time ago and shut this nonsense down. It's sucking up resources and only adding to wealth inequality.

Bitcoin rewarded a small group of very smart people very very very well. It then rewarded morons... hordes and hordes of morons very very well too. We will be living with the consequence of this for decades to come.

yup. I just keep a terminal open set to that path. Had just 10Mbit wifi before but that is now 500Mbit. Will have to revisit this solution. Something like a rsync would be nice.

codecamper··on Silicon Valley Runs on Saudi (2019)
Here is an idea:

Don't take the Saudi money. Don't take any money.

Just build it, and ship it. Work a regular job and work on your startup at night.

Create a product and charge very little for it. Wipe out the competition with a better / cheaper product.

Once you think you are having an effect, short your competitor. Continue to ship your as good or better product for 1/3 the cost.

  Take down the world powers.

  Just an idea.

But but but... making EVs is VERY VERY complicated.

You need to understand the S-curve.

Exponential change!

lmao.

Not really my point that selling options is the problem.

imo, allowing < 25k account holders to buy short dated options should not be allowed due to their outsized effect on stock price. And the tendency for that price rise to snap back like an overstretch rubber band. It's just creating more volatility.

codecamper··on Roaring Kitty to testify on GameStop alongside hedge fund managers
Not really.

It's about removing leverage from the system.

His idea seems like a rough sketch. I don't know how deep he has thought about it. But he mentioned it in at least a few talks.

Would be awesome if you all just looked him up & went to talk with him.

He represents the "what bio can do" part of the equation. And bio does quite a lot already.

codecamper··on Activists who embrace nuclear power
Luckily we already have a working fusion reactor. It's 92M miles away, but it's a big one. All that is required are some solar panels and wind turbines to harness its power.
codecamper··on Activists who embrace nuclear power
So Bill Gates doesn't think we can do this with a majority solar, wind, and storage. He invented the backslash and has a lot of money, so he is getting a lot of attention.

But has a good computer simulation been made? Just collect annual sunlight data from a million points across the US, along with wind, throw in 200M electric vehicles (can use satellite data and image recognition data to guess how often they are parked for V2G), and see how far we can get towards a 100% green grid.

I haven't seen a computer simulation and yet here is Bill saying it's impossible. Is it? Or is this just another "computers will never need more than 640k" moment?

The Tasty Trade guy did something similar but then

sold the strangle and sold vol for 600% and bought it back at 400% and managed to cancel out his losses.

that guy is an options trading ninja.

George Church figured they'd just collect and then sink. not much life down there and once it is deep enough, it might be deep enough to perma-sequester.
codecamper··on Launch HN: Noya (YC W21) – Direct air capture of CO2 using cooling towers
Hilarious that nobody upvoted my post. I've been looking into the CO2 problem for more than 10 years & this seems like one of the most promising ideas... because it sounds possible to pull off.

Yes, I have the same question for Dr. Church. How does he plan to control their population? Maybe something like this:

codecamper··on Launch HN: Noya (YC W21) – Direct air capture of CO2 using cooling towers
Have you heard about George Church's idea?

He says it's possible to modify the dna of cyanobacteria so that they become immune to their natural predator: the cyanophage.

Apparently cyanobacteria consume an incredible amount of CO2 every year, but then right away release it again after the cyanophage kills them.

Seems like a potentially workable idea, but I have not heard him give the details anywhere.

He is at MIT & so are some of you guys... go talk with him! Maybe it could be used inside your towers as a way to more efficiently capture the co2?

Thanks for doing what you all are doing btw. We desperately need a solution.

codecamper··on Roaring Kitty to testify on GameStop alongside hedge fund managers
The elephant in the room that I don't see much discussion about is the use of options by small retail accounts.

There are piles of rules around trading in accounts < $25,000.

But then those same guys are allowed to trade options.

An option has a 100x built in leverage.

A simple solution to this problem is to require the underlying amount of margin or cash in the account to purchase the option. ie. If you want to buy a $3 option for BBBY (costing $300) then this will take $2800 from your initial cash or margin.

Yes, this effectively puts options out of reach to small investors, but... maybe that's a good thing.
