Feeling like contacting me?

email - hn (at) femto (dot) host discord - Codefined#8017

I'm pretty open to talking about anything.

codefined··on Ask HN: How many hours do you work?
My work week is generally 30 hours or so, which provides me more than enough to provide for both myself and another, as well as excess for savings.

If you're working that long, I feel the other parts of your life may be suffering. Do you have a fixed time contract or are you contracting?

codefined··on Entr: Rerun your build when files change
Nodemon[1] is also good, normally Node centric but all parameters can be configured.

codefined··on Ask HN: Have any of you moved back home to save money?
Hm, I guess my outgoings are around the 500 mark, which makes it much easier to swallow.
codefined··on Ask HN: Have any of you moved back home to save money?
Having my own place has really helped with my social life and relationships. It's nice to have a place to invite people over that you can call your own.

Any suggestions on a group video conferencing tool for use on a local network (Ethernet) that's effective? Either self-hosted or online, just for personal usage to talk with others?
codefined··on Pentagon chief breaks with Trump over using troops for protests
I see no such evidence.
codefined··on Gamer Janken, or How to Pick a First Player
We use the same and it's been fantastic.
codefined··on BigBlueButton: An open source web conferencing system
How does this compare to something like 'Jitsi Meet'?
codefined··on Performance Testing HTTP/1.1 vs. HTTP/2 vs. HTTP/2 and Server Push for REST APIs
Windows, Firefox, Ethernet (220mbps on fast.com):

https/2 is ~0.1s (1.02s /2 vs 1.11s /1.1) faster on first load and ~0.2s faster on future loads. I'm tempted to say there are diminishing returns as your internet gets faster (latency is ~11ms atm).

codefined··on Ask HN: What do you do with your free tier or dirt-cheap VM?
MinIO, a S3-compatible file store, running on top of a cluster of ZFS VMs. It just uses the available disk space from my other servers.
codefined··on Ask HN: What do you do with your free tier or dirt-cheap VM?
Host https://femto.pw, a free file uploading and downloading service.
codefined··on Open Source, Low Latency, High Quality Voice Chat
Still out goto application for chatting, an exceptional piece of technology. Works on unbelievably awful computers in the worst Internet conditions.

Discord has them beat in terms of improving the quality of bad microphones, but also requires an order of magnitude more bandwidth.

codefined··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
We don't make any money, but all the hardware is just making use of unspent resources. E.g. The storage is a GlusterFS cluster across all of my machines, encrypted and replicated three times in case anything goes wrong. The cpu usage and memory usage is negligible and bandwidth is free from my provider.

Until it gets to about 32TB of used storage it won't cost me anything, and at the current rate of growth that is going to take decades.

A simple file uploader - https://femto.pw/

We're upto 460TB of data being transferred, :)

codefined··on Everything You Need to Know About Date in JavaScript
Can recommend DayJS[0] as a lighter alternative to MomentJS with an almost identical API.

codefined··on Japanese government will access home devices in security survey
'Smashing a window' is unlikely to incur costs of $30,000, perhaps $300 is a better estimate.

I would also argue that insurance resources, customer hassle, police resources and judicial resources are also all roughly equal for handling stolen items from a car, versus stolen items from a car + window broken.

codefined··on RunJS
It does, but it takes effort and I believe that Windows compiling is hard work on Mac.
codefined··on Mjs – An interpreter for ECMAScript 1st edition written in C++17
Should this be defined as a bug or simply browsers lacking an optimisation trick? In my view it's the latter. The result is the same, the only difference is it's slightly slower to keep "a" around.

I think it's reasonable to expect HN readers to realise that threads have been merged, but it can be difficult to track down the article in question all the same.

Whilst complex threading might seem to counter the simplicty of HN, might it be reasonable to include a link to the original article when merging?

codefined··on Introducing Hooks
> because it's apparently hard to work out all the ways that the method could be invoked

Simple example case of a statement that makes it impossible to minify function names:

    class Test { static func() { /* function code */ } }
    test[prompt('function to call')]()

codefined··on RawGit is now in a sunset phase and will soon shut down
> It's super nice of you to offer, but I don't need any donations at this time. RawGit's server costs are minimal, and the lovely people at StackPath provide RawGit's CDN service free of charge. Thank you though!
codefined··on PgFormatter: A PostgreSQL SQL syntax beautifier
I might be missing something, but it seems like a fairly high quality README file. What do you feel is wrong with it?
codefined··on PgFormatter: A PostgreSQL SQL syntax beautifier
It's a relatively common name. I would say it might even be more common than the alternative of "code formatter". I do agree that the syntax of the language isn't changing, but it does seem like the phrase that has stuck.
codefined··on Uniqlo cut 90% of staff at one warehouse by replacing them with robots
So, the first shift was manual labour being automated during the industrial revolution. Now slowly intellectual jobs are being replaced. The only unique aspect a human has after this are emotional jobs (psychiatrist, etc).

There are not enough emotional jobs that can be created to fulfill 7 billion people (a quickly rising number). I think we're going to need a shift in the mindset of people. Jobs aren't required, we should instead look at increasing recreational activities available to people and try to enjoy our lives.

codefined··on Mmm, Pi-hole
I'm confused. You want people to write all content for free? Whilst that works for a lot of people who do it in their spare time, it does restrict anyone looking to write professionally from contributing.

It's not just JoshMnem who has this, the same happens to me. Running 69 on Windows.
codefined··on AirConsole – Play multiplayer games together
Not the parent commenter, but am currently using F-Droid and not Play services. It seems great for everything I wish to do on Android. Only exception is the game options, which are very limited.
