coderdude··on What I've Learned From Female Founders So Far
Seems like a sentence that has nothing to do with the paragraph it appears in.
coderdude··on Show HN: Hoodie App is Men's Clothing in Two Taps
Return policies like that are more typical of lingerie sites for obvious reasons. If I had to guess, the real reason for that return policy is they don't want to worry about people returning things they wore for a night out and decided afterwards that they want their money back. Maybe they'll put some kind of highly-visible tag on the clothes and if the tag is removed then they won't let you return the items. Seems reasonable to me (a `no tag, no refund` policy).
coderdude··on Reddit to Give 10% of Its 2014 Ad Revenue to Non-Profits Picked by Its Users
They should focus their efforts on redditgifts (http://redditgifts.com/) and consider putting it on the main site instead of on a separate domain. Their users may not like to buy mainstream products but they definitely like to buy quirky, off-the-wall things as evidenced by `Shut Up And Take My Money`'s success with advertising on Reddit. They've already got the right idea with the marketplace model. They should (if they're not already) focus on trying to attract unique products through a program similar to Steam's Greenlight and stop focusing so much on advertising. Advertising and Redditors -- generally speaking -- are not a good match.
coderdude··on Awesome Netflix/Fitbit Hack Detects When You’ve Fallen Asleep, Auto-Pauses Movie
It'd be nice to see a solution to this problem for Hulu. It seems like they accomplish this already by failing to load ads. On my Wii there's a good chance that ads won't load and it forces me to go back to the menu or hit 'retry'. At first it was annoying but now I've come to rely on ads failing so that I don't skip too many episodes after falling asleep. Though you probably can't get me to wear something that monitors my vitals.

coderdude··on Most Winning A/B Test Results are Illusory [pdf]
In my experience it can't be overstated how important it is to wait until you have a large sample size to decide whether a variation is the winner. Nearly all of the A/B tests I run start out looking like a variation is the clear, landslide winner (sometimes showing 100%+ improvement over the original) only to eventually end up regressing toward the mean. I can't get a clear idea of the winner of a test until I've shown the variation(s) to 10s of thousands of visitors and received a few thousand conversions. I've also learned that it's important to only perform tests on new visitors when possible. That means tests need to run longer to get the appropriate sample size. If you're testing over a few hundred conversions and performing tests on new and returning visitors then you're probably getting skewed results. Again, that's just in my experience so far. YMMV. One thing to consider with a test is that the variations may be too subtle to have a significant, positive impact on conversion.

They're growing very quickly.
coderdude··on Coinbase Raises $25 Million From Andreessen Horowitz
Coinbase is cruising at escape velocity. I signed up for an account around the time they launched. I had some questions about button creation so I emailed them. In response, Brian (the founder) coded up a button API to make it possible to generate payment buttons on the fly. Needless to say, the show of dedication was impressive. Congratulations to the Coinbase team.
coderdude··on Bootstrap 3.0.3 released
You should override Bootstrap's styles in a separate stylesheet and combine them during a build step or serve them separately, with the custom styles served after Bootstrap's styles. That won't help with backwards compatibility issues but it makes it a lot easier to upgrade.
coderdude··on Show HN: Headline Smasher
Saturdays are probably the low-traffic day on HN. I remember pg saying once that Wednesday was the peak day. It's possible the algo compensates for a lack of traffic. Fewer submissions might affect the decay of popular items.

coderdude··on WrapBootstrap is offering bounties
I'm really glad to hear that it's helping out. Looking forward to seeing your themes!
coderdude··on WrapBootstrap is offering bounties
Sellers receive a 5% higher starting and max commission rate as well as receive commission on the full price of their items during site-wide sales (like the recent 'Launch a Startup in 2014' sale). Now, the bounties offer a way for sellers to earn bonuses when they submit the most sought-after items.

Disclaimer: I own WrapBootstrap.

coderdude··on A new HTML5 Admin Teamplate
The competition is getting intense but new themes are often able to gain footing on the frontpage. Genyx, Genius, and PIXMA are examples of themes released in the last few weeks that now hug the top half of the frontpage.
coderdude··on A new HTML5 Admin Teamplate

coderdude··on A new HTML5 Admin Teamplate
Gaining exposure is difficult and it's not guaranteed that people will flock to what you've built.
coderdude··on A new HTML5 Admin Teamplate
If you build it, they won't necessarily come. Marketplaces provide a channel for discovery.
coderdude··on A new HTML5 Admin Teamplate
That's not accurate. 75% is the maximum commission for sellers with 55% being the starting rate. 35% is the minimum and applies to themes sold non-exclusively.

coderdude··on f.lux has been updated to a new version
'Intrusive blue light' was enough to get me to download it. This is great. Feels so much easier on my eyes right now (6am).
coderdude··on GoDaddy, Media Temple, and the Horrible World of Web Hosting
I've been a Media Temple customer since 2007 and a GoDaddy customer since 2004 [edit: I say 2004 but I don't think that's possible. I must have switched to them sometime after 2006 but I can't recall who my previous registrar was.]. I like both companies just fine though apparently not everyone has been as lucky. I don't know if GD is going to be a good home for mt since GD specializes in cheaper hosting. But...

GoDaddy does a lot to support their customers. Friendly people over the phone. They've walked my dad through some hosting issues he had when he was trying to set a site up. They call me every couple of months to make sure I'm satisfied with everything (and probably try to sell me on that bundled registration). Making them out to be The Devil is too dramatic. And transparent too when he could have linked to the #Philanthropy[1] heading on their Wikipedia page but chose to focus on #Controversies to support a position.

coderdude··on Texas teen in jail for his Facebook comment
So? That doesn't back up the flamebait claim that every illegal action a US citizen engages in results in going to prison. I don't care if my country is unpopular right now, it's still BS.
coderdude··on Texas teen in jail for his Facebook comment
USA, where prison is the solution to everything.

Don't post ignorant flamebait. You have no idea what you're talking about.

coderdude··on General Alexander wearing EFF shirt
Two things from the article that I want to comment on:

>>"In this room, this room right here, is the talent our nation needs to secure cyberspace," Alexander told the standing-room-only audience at DefCon, a grassroots gathering in Las Vegas expected to draw a record 16,000 attendees this year. "We need great talent. We don't pay as high as everybody else, but we're fun to be around."

There was an EFF talk at Defcon a long while back where they told us about how the RIAA was recruiting talented hackers to join their ranks. Their warning was that the RIAA wasn't just a bunch of goons. They were hiring among us and we should be more careful about covering our assets. Not completely related but possibly relevant.

>>Alexander's appearance is a milestone for DefCon, a hacker mecca with an often-uneasy relationship with the feds.

It's not quite as serious as they're describing. With the "Spot the Fed" game being the most obvious nod that there isn't a real uneasiness but rather the rebellious "us vs. them" feeling of hackers vs. government. All very friendly though. I'd imagine most people thought it was neat to be in the same room as the NSA Director.

coderdude··on NSA gets no reply in Dutch cloud provider
I didn't make that comparison. I compared citizens to a search engine's loyal users.
coderdude··on NSA gets no reply in Dutch cloud provider
If the superpowers weren't countries but were instead the search engines of today then we could probably agree upon who would be Google and who would be Bing and so on. Do Google's users generally care about Bing, what Bing does, or what Bing thinks? (To stretch the metaphor almost to the point of breaking.) Most of Google's users don't think of Bing as a savage search engine but they do consider it irrelevant.
coderdude··on What We Don't Know About Spying on Citizens: Scarier Than What We Know
The Atlantic, who spams HN for hits, just happens to also have insight on what the NSA is up to? Yeah, right. There is nothing in this article.

coderdude··on Stop Validating Email Addresses With Your Complex Regex
>if it has and they don't have it allow them to change their email to their real email address

Couldn't an unscrupulous individual use that feature to take over non-activated accounts? An immediate use for that exploit doesn't spring to mind but this makes my spidey sense tingle. What sites allow this?
