coderdude··on Uvloop: Fast Python networking
Absolutely it's a positive that this is an active area of research. One day these types of problems are going to be something future programmers joke about. Or don't even know existed.
coderdude··on Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence
It is foolhardy to underestimate the abilities of the most powerful organization on the planet.
coderdude··on Uvloop: Fast Python networking
It's the best of both worlds but doesn't shield you from the worst of one of the worlds. Untrusted input is still reaching code that has direct access to system memory. Hopefully not, anyway. But probably. Still, it's the way to go if performance is key.
coderdude··on Google Deactivates Web Search API
Haven't all the web search APIs been gimped? In a past life this interested me greatly and I turned to both Google's API and to Yahoo's BOSS and they both basically sucked. You could tell you were not getting the type of results a proper search would return.
coderdude··on The price of solar power just fell 50% in 16 months
Another bait-word is "quietly":

https://hn.algolia.com/?query=quietly&sort=byPopularity&pref...

Really gives you the impression that Facebook deprecated their API's official Python bindings in order to be evil. Otherwise, they would have formally alerted the press.

"X just quietly did Y" is a thing, even:

coderdude··on Successfully Onboarding Remote Developers
Groove has some good blog posts about working remotely. They were my inspiration to start hiring remote workers.

coderdude··on Poll: Apply HN Runoff – Which two startups should YCF fund?
I agree. It's screwing with my objectivity.
coderdude··on Catching a Flight? Budget Hours, Not Minutes, for Security
A standard-issue toy throwing star that every adult has on them when trying to get through security checkpoints.
coderdude··on New example of rare Etruscan writing found
This made me want to Google 'Japanese entropy bits' and the first hit for me was this paper: http://www.phontron.com/paper/neubig13sam.pdf

"How Much is Said in a Tweet? A Multilingual, Information-theoretic Perspective"

I think what you want is presented in a figure on page 6.

coderdude··on Gavin Andresen's commit access to Bitcoin revoked, hacking suspected
I like how Satoshi is a kind of genius God in some people's eyes. Explaining what he would do in a situation, as though it is written in gospel somewhere.
coderdude··on I installed Windows 95 on my Apple Watch
It exists in a hundred different uploads on Planet Source Code's VB6 section. Go nuts.

https://www.planet-source-code.com/vb/default.asp?lngWId=1

I was an obsessive VB6er.

coderdude··on ES6, ES7, and beyond
Reminds me of how much I hear "this is broken. It does not work on mobile as described." Such a useless assertion. Must be more specific if you find a problem.
coderdude··on FBI paid professional hackers one-time fee to crack San Bernardino iPhone
Responsible disclosure isn't the FBI's most effective way of protecting the public.
coderdude··on Dominions of fizz: the carbonated-drinks industry and public health [pdf]
What do you mean by "litre"? What do you mean by "used"? What do you mean by "produced"?
coderdude··on Your heart rate at gunpoint
You probably did the right thing. You're not Duke Nukem.
coderdude··on The Panama Papers
HN should just let you post under Anonymous Coward. It would save so many people the trouble.
coderdude··on Boaty McBoatface: What You Get When You Let the Internet Decide
I think Pillar of Autumn is the coolest name ever given to something fictional. Followed by Shadow Moses island.
coderdude··on Boaty McBoatface: What You Get When You Let the Internet Decide
They should just admit that Boaty McBoatface is a stupid name, that asking "the Internet" to decide was a stupid idea, and quickly bury this idea behind them. At least it would set a precedent. I can't ever remember anything like this turning into something cool or favorable.

I know it was for the publicity. It worked, so good for that boat-line.

coderdude··on After Cash: All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses a Bank Account
Cards are sometimes faster but using my card usually goes like this:

Swipes card in reader, producing a loud error noise

"Nope, you have a chip. You need to stick it in the bottom. Hit next. Now enter your PIN. Do you want cash back? Hit okay. Let me see your ID, please."

Shows ID next to card so they can compare

"Sign this receipt, please. This one's your copy."

At which point I'm wishing I'd just used cash.

Just say gentleman's agreement. It's okay to use a real phrase.
coderdude··on The Trollable Self-Driving Car
Let natural selection run its course. At some point humans will evolve an instinct to not walk in front of a moving vehicle.

coderdude··on U.S. tells Google computers can qualify as drivers
Sounds reasonable to me.
coderdude··on U.S. tells Google computers can qualify as drivers
Are there not instances of parents being held legally responsible for their child's actions? I'm not setting you up. I don't know the answer to that question but if the answer is yes, that could be an analogy.
coderdude··on Why Stack Overflow Doesn’t Care About Ad Blockers
Piwik looks interesting. I'm playing with the demo right now. It does look like they support goals[1]. I can't know for sure how effective it is but I will concede that log analytics is more powerful than I believed.

coderdude··on Why Stack Overflow Doesn’t Care About Ad Blockers
How so? I'm willing to accept that I'm wrong if you can show any server log analytics package that is capable of that. It doesn't seem possible.
coderdude··on Why Stack Overflow Doesn’t Care About Ad Blockers
> No 3rd party analytics service can provide more accurate data than server logs. None.

Google Analytics provides information that goes far beyond what the server logs can tell you. The logs will give you the most accurate view of the requests to your server but that's all. You can't get insights about bounce rate, behavior, goal completion, conversion rate, etc. from server logs. To rely only on mining server logs would be a huge step backwards for a business.

coderdude··on PayPal CTO Resigns
I transitioned back to the old interface almost immediately. The search interface for past orders is less powerful because you now need to know when an order was placed in addition to having the transaction ID. The old interface can pull up an order without having the approximate order date as long as you can provide either your own txnid or the customer's txnid. Additionally, I was no longer able to pull up orders using the customer's txnid. So, that was a bummer.
coderdude··on Uninstalling Facebook app saves up to 15% of iPhone battery life
I came off as a jerk. Was cranky as all hell last night. Fb is actually a great way to keep in contact with your family and friends.
coderdude··on Uninstalling Facebook app saves up to 15% of iPhone battery life
Cool story. I use fb for marketing too. Who can't? Stop giving them your life story. It's not smart.
