coderzach··on SQL language proposal: JOIN FOREIGN
yeah, this is the right answer. Are there any examples where this isn't what you want? I guess GROUPING SETS and ROLLUP, but those could be special.

I've been feeling very paranoid about posting ANYTHING online, honestly. Or chat, email, video call, etc. Is that what we're talking about?

> Visa does[n't] need to hold the balance of my account.

Yes they do?

> Visa does[n't] need to or makes available all of my equity worth of assets for me to transfer.

This is a horrifying bug, right? A thing that no person would ever want, and it's so rare that visa would make you talk to a person and raise your limit first, or they'd get more people involved to make sure you're not being coerced because it's such an abnormal thing to do. Lawyers in some cases, just because you're being so silly. But if you REALLY wanted to make a $1b debit card transaction, you probably totally could, just call the visa billionaire line.

> Visa does not custody my assets.

But a regular bank can, and visa will send to and from there with a debit card.

coderzach··on Why are so many athletics records falling?
Having a human rabbit isn't something you can really stop.

Am I an idiot who went out way too fast for the first 600m and then died, or did I exactly hit my teammate's pace, and then fall off intentionally?

"All Property, indeed, except the Savage's temporary Cabin, his Bow, his Matchcoat, and other little Acquisitions, absolutely necessary for his Subsistence, seems to me to be the Creature of public Convention. Hence the Public has the Right of Regulating Descents, and all other Conveyances of Property, and even of limiting the Quantity and the Uses of it. All the Property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other Laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire and live among Savages. He can have no right to the benefits of Society, who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it."

He also didn't think much of private property.

The problem is that if the state were to provide secure public-private key cryptographic identity, there would be absolutely no need for PoW or PoS. Eventually we'll figure that out, and all of this work will haven been useless.
coderzach··on Bitcoin is close to becoming worthless?
Miners probably have a bit of a sunk cost fallacy, since there's a fixed cost associated with acquiring the hardware. Plus, if they're still bullish on bitcoin, the short term loss is probably worth it in their eyes.

coderzach··on Growth as a false signal in Y Combinator startups
TL;DR

Not every company that has a revenue chart shaped like a hockey stick is going to become a multi billion dollar business. Consider looking at metrics other than growth when investing.

Is this actually something that needs to be said?

coderzach··on Making SQL Server run on Linux
Not OP, but for us, the reasons we switched from postgres to sql server were the "clustered columnstore indexes" and query parallelization. Before switching to sql server, we spent a ton of time optimizing query performance with "clever" use of indexes, ctes, etc. With sql server, we've been able to just use the columnstore indexes and write simple, straightforward queries that run in ~200ms vs 10-20 seconds in postgres.

And before you ask, we spent A TON if time and money on configuration, paying for multiple postgres experts to help with optimization.

I see two issues with the ternary operator. One, the syntax is much less readable, and two, the consequent and alternate are both single expressions, so you can't do something like:

x = if(something) { a = foo(); baz(a); } else { b = bar(); baz(b); }
