codfrantic··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
unless this VLAN doesn't allow internet access the issue persists. And if it doesn't, not connecting it would be the more logical choice.
codfrantic··on A $1k Wheelchair
Don't forget Dutch people. I own and use four bicycles. My wife owns three.
codfrantic··on Electronics are built with death dates. Let’s not keep them a secret
I guess this is because they are making their money on the replacement brushes, not the toothbrush itself.
codfrantic··on The Electric Car Atop Europe’s Sales Charts Isn’t a Tesla or VW
This was specifically because starting in January this year tax breaks for electric cars were changed considerably for people leasing an electric car, specifically the more expensive ones.
codfrantic··on Turn your phone into a wireless webcam
I have a gopro clone 'eken H9R' which does exactly this, bought it for €20 euro's from a local sort of craigslist.

If you plug it into your PC without an SD card inserted it will act as a webcam perfectly.

codfrantic··on Airport Stuffed with Airliners
I know most of the KLM fleet in Europe is parked up at Schiphol airport. It was dry here the last few weeks but that stopped yesterday..

codfrantic··on Luxembourg to be first European country to legalise cannabis
> The Netherlands should legalize weed. They have two economic incentives (1) weed tax and (2) sustained tourism.

(3) professional agriculture can start producing high quality cannabis in greenhouses instead of the often dangerous attic setups with stolen electricity. (although people do get very creative! https://nltimes.nl/2016/07/22/cannabis-farm-found-eindhoven-...)

codfrantic··on Trinity: PSP Emulator Escape
I remember a guy who mounted his PSP on the handlebars of his motorbike and used it for navigation with a GPS dongle. No rerouting but turn by turn instructions to get us to follow a pre-planned route :)
codfrantic··on Have we forgotten to make heat traps? (2012)
I was really curious to read about this type of heating, then I read your comment. Quickly imagegoogled the term and found that this is the standard in most of north/west Europe.
codfrantic··on Sweden Wants to Revive Europe’s Overnight Trains
Here in the Netherlands 1 liter of gasoline was very low a few months ago at about €1,55. Now back up to €1,60 if you do your best or €1,78 on the highways. Portugal is not that bad :)

codfrantic··on Ask HN: Recommendation for noise cancelling headphones?
I use the Sony WH-H900N (h.ear 2) and absolutely love them, since I bought them (and a second set for my wife recently) three different colleagues ordered one after trying mine for < 10 minutes :-)

They cost around €220,-

codfrantic··on Google collects cell tower info even if location services are disabled
Same in the Netherlands, more and more shops are electronic payment only. Cash is a cost and a risk to them.
codfrantic··on Longest Lines of Sight on Earth
You must be Danish, I though us Dutch had it bad (320 max) I guess we do go below sea level more which also makes this calculation more difficult :)

I do agree on the utter amazement of visiting less flat places :)

codfrantic··on A Mac Podcast App You Can't Have
'Podcastaddict' also has google Cast functionality.
codfrantic··on Ask HN: Why are credit card chip readers so slow?
I recently helped a shop connect their terminal to the wired connection instead of the POTS one. The time it takes for a payment to go through went from 25 seconds to 2 seconds :) Also they used to pay a few cents for each transaction...
codfrantic··on Why is cycling so popular in the Netherlands?
I think there is a lot of bike theft, but people also keep this alive by buying a 3 AM Special from a junky in the center of town.

I've lived in Amsterdam for the last 9 years and the only bike I've had stolen was one that I didn't lock.... I even still have a bike sitting in a rack outside my house that has been mine for 18 years.

I'm riding a fancy looking €1000 bike daily, have been for the last four years, I lock it with just the default ring through the back wheel when I go into a shop or something, and use the chain I have to lock it to a bike rack. It's even insured if I just use the simple lock.

Thanks to some nice tax breaks (meaning you can get a bike for up to 49% off though your employer (look for 'fietsplan')) I am actually on the hunt for a new bike. :-)

codfrantic··on How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing (2013)
In the Netherlands it is similar, most information is combined for you by the government, they even introduced an app to file your taxes last year. It probably is still a lot of work for businesses though... We often hear about the advanced digital government in Estonia, must be nice to have such an open minded country.
codfrantic··on Headphone inline controls – how they differ on Apple iOS vs. Android/Nokia
To make things even more complicated, I have a Sony Xperia Z2 which uses a 5 point jack plug TRRRS, as far as I know the extra connection is only used to receive microphone signal from the included noise cancelling headphones.[1] (Since the noise cancelling logic is handled on the phone).

Almost all roads in the Netherlands are made with the porous tarmac, it solves many problems, but it will not last as long as the non porous variant and is indeed more expensive...

codfrantic··on MagSpoof – wireless credit card/magstripe spoofer
