codgercoder··on JSON Resume – a JSON-based open source standard for resumes
Doesn't it ever dawn on anyone that employers insist on detailed, accurate information about applicants, in standardized forms, while the information available about employers is a mess? There's no standard, there's no requirement, and they can mislead in quite creative ways. Hardly seems fair.

codgercoder··on One reason we lack Internet competition: Starting an ISP is hard
Uh, no. There were once 15,000 ISPs! They were killed off when incumbents flexed their monopoly power. Instead of disrupting telecom, the new ISPs were forced into the old ways of state utility commissions. When the war was over, the incumbents picked up infrastructure for cents on the dollar. The 1996 Telecom Deregulation Act totally failed.
codgercoder··on Who Are We at War With? That’s Classified
Oceania, Eastasia, and/or Eurasia :-)
codgercoder··on Leaked Samsung exFat driver relicensed as GPL
GPL, and probably other licenses, were constructed to work with copyright law. Such cavalier dismissal (by rxrz) is disrespecting those who created the licenses, the legal system, and the open source community, at large. We live in the real world, not "The Matrix".
codgercoder··on Stop Trying To Do Things Well: Getting Over Zero
seems pretty subversive; may well be true
codgercoder··on No, Yelp Doesn’t “Extort” Small Businesses. See For Yourself.
Of course, there's still no remedy for the fact that the annoyed are much more likely to speak up than the pleased, AFAIK.
codgercoder··on NIST:"System security should not depend on the secrecy of the implementation..."
Not every engineering solution survives politics.
codgercoder··on Learning to Code: "Coding is hard. Coding has always been hard"
How many atrocities have been committed in attempts to make it "not hard"?
codgercoder··on Ask HN: How do I "prove" my app doesn't infringe on existing IP?
Sadly, any developer of a 99 cent app might be sued for patent infringement, with no efficient and cost-effective way to find out ahead of time. Software companies have had this issue as long as software has been patentable (according to USPTO, anyway), but business insurance can be had for a price. The iPhone's conversion of software development into a "blockbuster" business (IE a few win big, most don't make anything), has encouraged small entities to enter the market who don't have the resources for insurance.
codgercoder··on Supreme Court rules for Monsanto in case against farmer
I wonder if this means I can buy a product from someone that, unbeknownst to me, violates a patent, and the patent holder can come after me.
codgercoder··on U.S. Lawmaker Proposes New Criteria for Choosing NSF Grants
The Republican War on Science goes on.
codgercoder··on The America Invents Act starts tomorrow; changes patent law to "first to file."
Let the unintended consequences begin! I always found this change suspect; a frequent rationale was that the rest of the world does it this way.
codgercoder··on Programming is not a Glamorous Job
I agree that glamorizing programming is not particularly helpful, except that coder-entrepreneurs can get more attention from venture capital. Glamorizing programming, along with the app-stores, is pushing the independent programming business into a "blockbuster" mentality, a winner-take-all situation where a small number of practitioners do very well and most don't ever make their development money back. Thanks, Steve Jobs!
codgercoder··on Programming is not a Glamorous Job
and don't forget the fact that there is new competition coming on the market everyday that is probably paid a tenth as much as you are.
codgercoder··on Postgres: The Bits You Haven't Found

codgercoder··on Are Cable Companies Hoping Usage-Based Internet Access Will Help Thwart Netflix?
This is the sort of thing that happens when there are 3 or 4 gigantic ISPs instead of 15,000 local ones. Enjoy what the 1996 Telecom Deregulation Act has wrought.
codgercoder··on Ask HN: How do we reduce the gender gap at our tech events
I hope this isn't just a rewording of "where are all the girls?"
codgercoder··on The One Million Project: Showcasing the power of the internet
Like many (any?) new environments, the Internet is rife with fools and charlatans. They make an ecosystem, in their own way.
codgercoder··on HBO asked Google to censor links to HBO.com
Someone should explain to these companies how their webservers can modify the response to internal URLs (IE force to different landing pages).
codgercoder··on Arizona set to make online impersonation a felony
My first thought was: "if Arizona is doing it, what's wrong with it?"
codgercoder··on A New Project To Run Mac OS X Binaries On Linux

codgercoder··on A Formal Language for Data Definitions
I should think the ASN.1 people got into this
codgercoder··on Most developers don’t really know any computer language
and yet, they still get hired..
codgercoder··on The amount of crap Windows users have to put up with is incredible
Your real problem is that you think you own your computer (err, software delivery appliance). I actually think PCs have become like MTV. MTV was a way to get all the people who like music and video onto a channel, then deliver all kinds of content (IE ads) that the advertisers think would be appropriate for them.

codgercoder··on Programmers Are Still Massively Underpaid
From your post to the market's ears..
codgercoder··on Why you would want to program at fifty (or any other age)
My big complaint is that I have to compete with so many people who seem not really much interested in, or knowledgeable about, programming, who can't wait to "advance" out of it, while I /love/ it and can't think of much else I want to do.
codgercoder··on Clay Christensen: “Disruptive Innovations Create Jobs, Efficiency Destroys Them”
Rapidly growing startups have things that must get done, almost regardless the cost. Effectiveness reigns over efficiency. Often they are providing something new in the marketplace. Once competition really sets in, cost starts to matter more, and efficiency reigns over effectiveness. The rash early hiring settles down.
