coding-saints··on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood
This is amazing. I am (regretfully) the introverted one in the community that watches as my wife and kids make the most of it. This is something I would love to stumble on. Great read!
coding-saints··on Hopping too many startups in a row?
I'll add that it was never common in my experience to get "real" details during the interview process from team members regardless of using a recruiter. Maybe it's only with my background, but I find out an actual impression the first week (processes, cross team interaction, gossip).
coding-saints··on Ask HN: What old video games did you love that haven't left a large footprint?
Besides all the "hacker games" I would play in obscure parts of the web, leisure suit Larry is one of those games I stumbled upon as a youth looking for anything that went against the grain. I was a kid that thought nudity was amazing. Still, the mechanics built into searching for clues in an environment that attempted "open world" concepts honestly consumed more time then the rewards earned.

Also Sony launched Matrix MMO that died out but I loved how they at least tried to continue character stories that added depth.

coding-saints··on Blockbuster Video VHS insert template
My parents owned a mom/pop video store during my childhood. It's still crazy to look back at how in-demand VHS tapes were. We lived in a super small town so there was zero competition. Cable was not common in every home yet. "Be kind, rewind" cost a buck if forgotten. Rewinding to the beginning of VHS tapes was honestly so long that nobody really forgot. The store was eventually acquired by some regional chain, and almost like magic the future started taking its form. So cool to see this.
coding-saints··on Ask HN: Business logic is slowing us down
Working on teams large and small, it's an effort. Larger companies block chunks of time to discuss this subject. Start-ups prioritize customers. One suggestion is to take ownership over tackling tech-dent or documentation. Express to your immediate team what you want to accomplish and provide some generic process to implement. It's never easy but make the effort to at least attempt solving this. Good luck!
coding-saints··on Ask HN: What is the best way to author blogs in 2024?
I've been a fan of using Netlify and Netlify-CMS (Decap now) with 11ty template.

coding-saints··on Eloquent JavaScript 4th edition (2024)
Great book
coding-saints··on Where I'm at on the whole CSS-Tricks thing
This site was amazing when I started front end development. I remember checking in from time to time and finally seeing the blunder with DO. DO was another starting point for me in my career when I was learning servers. Sad to see this outcome.
coding-saints··on Cash App having ongoing server issues (9/7/2023)
Not seeing any logs or place for updates on this. Curious what happened.
coding-saints··on Tell HN: Sometimes you don't realise how bad something is until you leave
Thank you for sharing.
coding-saints··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
My book is in context of changing career over to software engineer... "SOFT SKILLS" by John Somnez. Not sure if there's any alternative today for self taught people, but this book released right when I had started obtaining real work. Obviously just my personal experience.
coding-saints··on Teaching a cheap ethernet switch new tricks (2019)
I love I can still unexpectedly find a post that reminds me of why I even decided to focus on tech-related career. Great article! For me, following you down the rabbit hole is better than the result. Thanks.
coding-saints··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2021)
Strict policy for college degree here, fyi
coding-saints··on I want a computer that I own
I want to add that while the complexities of building a PC or understanding fundamentals of open source and licences is steep... For anyone who wants these constraints but is unwilling to be curious enough to learn the ways of DIY/makers is gonna get smashed on this forum IMO. I would hope to see a sub-thread of OP asking for "advice" on how to achieve a solution solo (unless I missed it...) . I am a huge advocate for [devs] building their own PC's for fundamental understandings..
coding-saints··on Ask HN: Advice for finding an entry-level remote job?
Keep in mind that it's 2021 and yet companies still practice paying wages based on the confidence with each individual when determining offers (more so with software industry). While I encourage you to listen to every comment on here, I also suggest you start matching your learning path in parallel with how you conduct your interviews. Just my two pennies, but if your goal is to dominate the next 2 years to prove your worth, don't forget to provide equal energy and dominate your interviews to gain experience needed for progress. And in case noone mentioned it yet, being a software engineer and interviewing for the position are 2 completely different skill sets. Don't sleep on gaining experience with interviews even for jobs you would never accept. It's not always going to be a fellow peer making the call on your value. It sucks but you'll find out it's not always a straight path to the finish line. Again, just my two pennies...
coding-saints··on Witeboard
Sorry if this was already suggested. Make sure you fix that load time asap so you don't lose any potential users prior to the screen being interactive. A quick hack might be to simply display a quick overlay dressed up like a landing page with a short description and have it load behind that until some CTA is pressed. That may prevent anyone from thinking the link is broke or whatever. As for the widget, I enjoy seeing the trend lately. It's nothing innovative, but is starting conversations on how remote workers have more options to incorporate similar things into our workflow. Great job!
coding-saints··on A 28-year-old with no degree becomes a must read on the economy
I agree and (from a developers POV) think the education needs updated to match the opportunities. But while this article and generate healthy discussions, so much is directed towards some "either / or" debate that it's hard to add input or perspective without feeling like a preamble
coding-saints··on Ask HN: Advice for a prisoner learning to program
He can still receive books, correct? I know many "technical" books are deemed "banned" (whole other topic) but try getting some high-reviewed books on critical thinking and problem solving. Those should be able to get in. Then try to get a list of subjects the specific prison disallows. Some guards will be more lenient when letting books pass through. But if this "friend" isn't someone you would waste money attempting this on, then send him a letter with lists of books he can ask someone else to send. Try to stay away from any books with specific "labguages" and focus more on architectures and system designs.
coding-saints··on ReformedFelonForHire.com – High quality software skills, at a competitive price
AMEN. I can only have so much sympathy here. You are flaunting this "offense" like it's petty. If it were ANY OTHER crime catagory, I might not even bat an eye.... but when people go out exposing themselves to kids, it makes me wonder what they haven't been caught for. I think you need to remove your post, be happy if you get work, and don't use the community for an issue that is so personal.
coding-saints··on Wix Code
I think the answer these days should be "hire a programmer". Never would I try and do a profession I did not understand, especially if it had something to do with profit/income. While WIX does have a nice community paying for their WYSIWYG, I would advise anyone to pay an experienced developer to create/maintain their site over doing it themselves.
coding-saints··on Ask HN: What is the best way to spend my time as a 17-year-old who can code?
Getting a degree is highly recommended IF you have no clue what you want to do. If you want to program, then program... intern, take on freelance projects for non profits to build a portfolio. Do NOT spend 100k on an education that may not have the most "modern" concepts of software engineering put into their professors. Best advice is to have fun! No matter what, enjoy your life... you only get one. And make sure you are always challenging yourself when you code. Try to use your own imagination to create an app, allowing problems to arise so you can learn how to fix them. If it's too easy, you'll know. And good luck!
