codingclaws··on Ask HN: What's is your go to toolset for simple front end development?
You really want to use drag and drop as a dev?

I've been a front and back-end web dev for 20 years. For front-end I almost always use vanilla CSS, vanilla JavaScript, and vanilla HTML by way of the back-end SSR template system.

codingclaws··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (July 2022)
SEEKING WORK | Portugal (US expat) | Remote

I have been a freelance generalist web developer since 2003. I usually work as an IC. Portfolio link available in bio.

codingclaws··on Ask HN: Does it make sense for people to have to solve problems in interviews?
A portfolio. Maybe a detailed conversation about a past project. Perhaps a git log. Maybe some references. Maybe a convo about fundamental skills.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Does it make sense for people to have to solve problems in interviews?
There's other evidence that would indicate a successful past dev career.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Does it make sense for people to have to solve problems in interviews?
I don't think interview problem solving is a good barometer for a person's problem solving skills. For example, you can't use subconscious thinking. And the pressure is much greater (which can really change things).
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Does it make sense for people to have to solve problems in interviews?
I think solving problems in an interview and not in an interview are two very different things. In other words, it seems to me there's a difference between solving a problem however I want vs. solving one on a phone or video call while someone is twiddling their thumbs. If anything, there's no room for subconscious thinking which I heavily rely on.

Also, sometimes I feel like a "monkey in a circus". Sometimes I want to say, "I'll solve your problem if you solve mine". Is power imbalance the right phrase?

codingclaws··on Ask HN: Does it make sense for people to have to solve problems in interviews?
I would like to pair for an interview but I don't think I've ever done that across over 100 of them. It might be hard for me though, because I'm a generalist and often apply to jobs where I haven't used the stack recently.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Does it make sense for people to have to solve problems in interviews?
I've read a lot of HN interviewing discussing, but I've never seen this specific question asked.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Do you still provide cover letters?
I have about 20 years of experience and I consider my initial email to be the "cover letter".
codingclaws··on Andrew's Ng new updated ML course will be out on June
What version is this, three?
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Best Width for Website?
I recently built a forum [0], and I noodled on site width for awhile. I decided to allow the user to pick any width they want between 500-1000 pixels, or they can pick full width. You can actually try it here without logging in:

https://www.peachesnstink.com/settings

I think it works nicely. I believe the default is 600.

codingclaws··on Ask HN: How to write case studies for apps I've built?
Future potential clients. I plan to put them on my portfolio site.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Do you still monitor your SSL certificate validity?
I don't. I just assume that cert bot will do its job.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: How do you deep work?
Get a problem in my head, and then go do something else. Deep autopilot work.
codingclaws··on Mavis Beacon was the top typing teacher in the US, then she vanished
I still play:

codingclaws··on John Locke’s recipe for Pancakes (2021)
For pancakes I only use half a banana (mashed) and 3 eggs.

codingclaws··on Ask HN: Experiences w “JS-free” front ends? (Hotwire, Unpoly, Inertia.js, htmlx)
If you do everything with SSR and only use form submissions on the front-end, then you can get 0% front-end JS with most stacks.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
I'm working on an open source HN/reddit clone [1]. I'm trying new things and for moderation I've settled on self-moderation using whitelists of users.

codingclaws··on Ask HN: What's the best way to moderate images in 2021?
No, text is self-moderated by each user by using whitelists of users.
codingclaws··on Gravitational waves should permanently distort space-time
I've had that theory. Gravity wells remain for a time after the responsible mass has moved on. Maybe that explains dark matter/energy.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: What's the tech stack of some of the top cryptocurrency exchanges?
SQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
codingclaws··on Freedom.js
Where, in the textarea? I don't see it. Chrome or Linux browser?

edit: added "Chrome or"

codingclaws··on Freedom.js
It looks like a framework to build P2P web apps ...using each node's front-end only. Haven't dug into it. Wonder how DB works.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Thank you. Follow up question if you have time. For these native Android apps, I'm interested in building apps that have good backward compatibility and thus low maintenance costs. Is backward compatibility easy to achieve with Android apps? If not, what tips can you provide?
codingclaws··on Freedom.js
OP here. I'm not associated with this project. I searched for P2P web apps and this was the first result. Looks like no commits since 5 years ago - which could be a good thing.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
What setup do you use for new Android apps? I dabbled in building an Android app months ago and sort of gave up because I couldn't decide on the best "framework".
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Why are developers so stingy with “rows per page”?
It's mainly out of respect for the user's bandwidth. For example, if they're on a 2GB phone plan, then 500 records could drain a significant % their monthly allotment.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: What does a timeless social media app look like?
Yes.
codingclaws··on Ask HN: Is back end dev generally easier than front end?
Non-techs really emphasize specialists because they think it will save them money.
