codyro··on Ask HN: Times the world has dodged a bullet
I just finished Hot Zone by Richard Preston, which is about some of the origins of Ebola and an example case of potential disaster being thwarted by the hair of our chin. Fun read.
codyro··on Ask HN: What's the best book you've read so far in 2024?
You may find The Power Broker (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Power_Broker) by him interesting as well :)

While I primarily read fiction, I've been reading through the first book in Robert A. Caro's The Years of Lyndon Johnson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Years_of_Lyndon_Johnson) and have been quite engaged given the interest I have in the topic (history as a whole isn't generally the genre I leap for, but Caro has a way to make it interesting).
codyro··on AlmaLinux 9.4 less than one week after RHEL 9.4, with added hardware support
So to be certain, using these drivers in subsequent releases should be done with caution.

Are there any plans to add testing for these specific drivers/hardware?

codyro··on AlmaLinux 9.4 less than one week after RHEL 9.4, with added hardware support
What level of support is being guaranteed to the drivers that upstream has stopped supporting? If a bug crops up, does AlmaLinux intend to patch things in-house?

Disclaimer: I volunteer my time at AlmaLinux/am part of the project.

codyro··on Matrix? No, Thanks
While the post itself comes off as a bit rambling the mentioned research from a third party is mildly interesting:

codyro··on Climate activist arrested after ProtonMail provided his IP address
Also a paying ProtonMail customer.

While I concur that it's a bit misleading nothing is stopping you from using your own key and mail client (albeit with their "bridge" solution) to send E2EE e-mails.

If you rely on the keys they generate you can export them and use them accordingly but one should be weary of the handling of said keys if they were compelled to make a backdoor as others have noted.

That being said this does leave a bad taste in my mouth.

codyro··on Our first patent troll
I want to say a few years ago there was a "positive" verdict in a jurisdiction in Texas which set precedent which is why you see filings over there.

Let me see if I can find a reference and I'll update this comment.

codyro··on Remediation Plan for WoSign and StartCom
I believe so - they're owned by the same company and it wasn't disclosed properly leading to some trust issues.

Additionally there seems to be a lot of co-mingling between the companies in regards to code bases and signing practices.

I'd check out https://wiki.mozilla.org/CA:WoSign_Issues and look for "StartCom" for examples.

codyro··on Webhost "Peachy Dandy" disappears... with my sites
I work at Hawk Host - we restored a lot of the Peachy Dandy accounts so you might want to submit a ticket to our support department (https://support.hawkhost.com) and we'll see if we can get you your stuff.
