coenhyde··on The development pipeline is a production system
Yes but parts of it must live in the dev environment. CI by its very nature runs untrusted code. That is very hard to secure. Keep it away from production, production artifacts and production credentials. CI and CD should also be separate systems. The same system which builds and runs untrusted code should not have permission to push to production. Most of the industry uses a single system for CI/CD though. Good luck to you all.
coenhyde··on The future of Terraform CDK
That might have been the promise but never the real value. As you say in practice the engineer needs to know ops & terraform along side their language of choice.

The real value of cdktf was more dynamic infrastructure provisioning while still having the plan / apply pattern.

coenhyde··on New research reveals the strongest solar event ever detected, in 12350 BC
Oxygen is a hell of a drug.

I use nose strips, and I'm addicted now too.

coenhyde··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
100%. Said as an Aussie who has been living in the states for a decade
coenhyde··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
It's cool to see Australian values & parenting techniques propagating into American society. Our conquest will be complete soon :)
coenhyde··on GPT-4 is phenomenal at Code
Probably. GPT3.5 was really good at writing unit tests. I asked it to unit tests for some typescript code using jest and aws-sdk-mock. It did it as I would do. I really couldn't fault it.
coenhyde··on Trees Across the U.S. Are Sprouting Leaves Earlier Than Usual This Year
Energy is life. But we've had commercial nuclear for over half a century. We as a society just chose to pollute instead of dealing with the real / not real risks associated with nuclear.
coenhyde··on FBI chief says TikTok 'screams' of US national security concerns
I didn't interpret the OP's comment to suggest a specific order of invention, but an order of adoption / influence in a society.
coenhyde··on Ask HN: How can Netflix and Amazon Prime be this bad at recommending content?
IMO Netflix and Amazon Prime's problem is they don't surface their good content enough. They mix it with their shitty content. They should make it stand out. HBO are good at this. When they make something good, that they know is good, they will rub your face in it with large high quality images.

I don't have time to shift out the good from the bad with Netflix.

coenhyde··on NASA, DARPA will test nuclear engine for future Mars missions
Can we develop a nuclear salt water rocket already?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_salt-water_rocket

Scott Manley video on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvZjhWE-3zM

Basically a controlled thermo nuclear reaction blasting out the back.

"One design would generate 13 meganewtons of thrust at 66 km/s exhaust velocity (or 6,730 seconds ISP compared to ~4.5 km/s (450 s ISP) exhaust velocity for the best chemical rockets of today)."

You certainly wouldn't want to use this to take off from Earth. But we could use it for deep space travel.

coenhyde··on The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
You've made a very good point. All new software/systems I build will use TAI64. As an industry we should just push this move ourselves
coenhyde··on Show HN: GitHub Org Audit Tool
As much a fan of Terraform I am. If you didn't started defining your repos in Terraform from day 0, importing hundreds of repos, members, permission sets would be quite a lot more work than running this audit tool.
coenhyde··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
That further improves the analogy. Even though we all agree washing hands is important and saves lives, it still doesn't happen on occasion.
coenhyde··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
You can put your keys in source control if you are encrypting them with another key which is not in source control. Otherwise you're doing it wrong.
coenhyde··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
You're jumping to conclusions in your final statement there. The existence of inexcusable bad practices does not mean we should not try to mitigate against them, and I didn't say we shouldn't.
coenhyde··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
That's certainly a good idea. But the secrets shouldn't be in the codebase to begin with, certainly not production secrets. Production secrets should stay in production and no one has access. Whatever intends to use the production secrets should have first been developed in a dev environment and released to prod.
coenhyde··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
Doctors used to not wash their hands too. I get it though, and i've seen the same thing. Really it comes down to education and not granting access to secrets to people who aren't capable of handling them.
coenhyde··on Ask HN: GDPR in 2022 – What do I need to know as a solo founder?
I'm not going to disagree with that and I'm not opposed to the privacy controls in GDPR. The context here in a solo dev who is dealing with GDPR. When you're trying to get a business off the ground, iterating fast and trying to build a business that can survive to day 2, every single bit of busy work should be avoided. Why reduce your chances of success by chasing a market that takes more work than other markets? The global market without Europe is big enough to support any startup; so long as you build something people want.
coenhyde··on Toyota suffered a data breach by accidentally exposing a secret key on GitHub
Those three are not all equal. "Production keys in source control" is the equivalent of a surgeon not washing their hands between between surgeries. It's basic level of professional competency that should not be violated. The latter two are bad mistakes, which shouldn't happen but do.
coenhyde··on Ask HN: Why does the media say inflation is up every month?
Australia has had a lot of asset inflation and is only recently starting to show in the consumer prices. eg afaik house prices are not included in the CPI
coenhyde··on Ask HN: GDPR in 2022 – What do I need to know as a solo founder?
If I was starting a startup today. I'd probably just block Europe and focus on other markets initially. Loop back on Europe once you have product market fit and the resources to deal with GDPR.
coenhyde··on EVEmu – An EVE Online Emulator
I've never played EVE Online, but that is a not because I don't want to. It's basically the game I dreamed about as a kid. And I know if I play, I will want to win, but you can't win, you can only dominate; by investing lots and lots of time. People say I'm not missing much because it's a spreadsheet in space. Unfortunately that sounds right up my alley. I love games where I can find tiny optimizations and compound them into an unchallengeable force. But if I have the time to build a space empire, I have the time to build a new startup empire in real life, which I don't.
coenhyde··on Why we moved from AWS RDS to Postgres in Kubernetes
You're talking like managing stateful services in an ephemeral environment is as simple as installing and configuring Postgres. Postgres is its self is 1% of the consideration here.
coenhyde··on Parallel Economy: Censor-Resistant Payment Processing
I don't understand what they do to prevent the things they rant about. It's like the drunk uncle payment processor. Sure there are legitimate grievances to address with the current state of freedom of speech etc, but it is clear the owners are into far right conspiracies.
coenhyde··on Tell HN: Somebody implemented something I wrote a blog about
When Apple released the very first iPod, I wrote to Steve Jobs to tell him that I would buy it if it was a phone too, as i don't want to carry two devices. I doubt I was the only one who had this thought, but I like to think i influenced the development of the iPhone. I never received a response from Steve.
coenhyde··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
I explicitly wasn't talking about second and third world countries, so your comment is mostly moot. I don't know about you, but I prefer we compete with our peers on quality of life rather than the tiers below. We should strive to be the best, not just better than the worst.

> Such as Turkey? Or Mexico? Why do you think Mexicans escape to the US? Because their life was too easy and they wanted to have more of a challenge?

They come the US because the quality live in the US is superior ... I didn't say it wasn't.

coenhyde··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
I would agree that it's not entirely the result of precarious financial situations. But even in tech and other high paying sectors, I would argue it still plays a factor, even if it is unconscious. Golden handcuffs are in part evident of this. Everyone in America wants to make enough money they can retire comfortably. Which is an entirely rational thing to want to do. But other countries do have higher paying pensions, so the fear of retiring destitute is less.

Also keep in mind employer expectations are a market just like any other. You as an employee compete against others willing to go lower. If you have a portion of the population in precarious financial situations, that will still impact you somewhat as they compete for jobs indirectly with you.

coenhyde··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
You're right and wrong. You are right that it is hard if you are poor and easy if you are rich. But you are wrong that HN or people outside of the US do not understand that it is only hard for poor people. It's just that external to the US, people care about the welfare of poor people more. The fact that you felt it necessary to state that caveat illustrates how systemic problems which victimize poor people can be excused and remain unchanged in the US.

For context I've lived for decades in both Australia and the US. Pros and cons in both cultures, and I love both.

coenhyde··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
Not to mention living in America is like playing life on hard mode; at least relative to other OECD countries. There's a lot more things you have to take care of / think about in America. There's a level of mental overhead that does not exist in other developed countries that many Americans do not realize are optional. eg health insurance, education, unemployment safety net, or even little things like way too many coverage options when buying car insurance.

When you do not have to worry about your health or physical safety if you lose your job, you can chill out a little bit. You don't need to bend over backwards for your job, it is easier to enforce boundaries. This dynamic puts adult Americans under a lot of stress, and it manifests in many ways. And it propagates to the children too, through lack of attention or stressful home.
