You always need to understand a bit of the past technological layer before saying your goodbyes to it and moving on to the next progress phase. That's life for a programmer.
Actually, it is quite similar to a /compact with a harness: you need to "sum up" you current knowledge (aka abstractions, design patterns, ...) from time to time to carry it along with you in your journey.
