colejohnson66··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
Is that not the point of a 14-50 socket? To say that you can draw 50 amps? If you can't supply 50 amps without tripping a breaker, don't install a 50 amp socket.
colejohnson66··on C++26 Disapproved
The hatred of data centers and AI is partly a proxy for the working class' growing anger at the ruling class. Crony and late-stage capitalism squeezing every last drop out of people can only go on for so long.
colejohnson66··on C++26 Disapproved
Until you want to do something as simple as export a function from the dll/so. The syntax and stdlib may be standardized, but that's not enough to make a language portable.
colejohnson66··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
I've heard this and always wondered if most are related to compliance?
colejohnson66··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
That's just GUIs being easier to use than CLIs for most people. After all, that's why Postman got popular - it's a GUI to do curl without the CLI! Or Handbrake to avoid using ffmpeg. Or various "paint" applications to rotate images instead of using imagemagik.

The problem is that Postman decided to want to be a business and took VC money.

WordPress or something else. Site builders have existed for decades.
colejohnson66··on The U.S. Census Bureau and "Super Intelligence"
Does "token" now qualify as worthy of being called an "SI unit"? In the same vein as the "mole"?
colejohnson66··on Four Months of Zig
Not just that, but on Windows, they're bypassing the actually guaranteed stable Win32 API in favor of linking directly to the lower-level components. Completely destroying any forward compatibility!

https://codeberg.org/ziglang/zig/issues/31131

It's the kind of change that makes me read Zig as not trying to be a serious language. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the way Zig positions itself is at odds with the completely bizarre takes they do.

colejohnson66··on UTS #39: Unicode Security Mechanisms
There's a lot of languages in plane 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plane_(Unicode)#Supplementary_...
colejohnson66··on UTS #39: Unicode Security Mechanisms
It's because JavaScript was created in 1995. At that time, everyone believed UCS-2 was "all you'd ever need". Well, Westerners believed it. It's why Han Unification existed; to try to perpetuate that lie. It's why Windows is UTF-16 at its core.
colejohnson66··on UTS #39: Unicode Security Mechanisms
Why use that when a "simple" dictionary structure mapping codepoint to language exists? It's called Unicode.

colejohnson66··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
Yes they do, but they hide it. On the plans page,[0] if you click "see all plans", a true monthly subscription option appears. But the prices are unreasonably large to force you into the "annual, billed monthly" trick. For example, the full creative suite (Creative Cloud Pro) is $35 "a month" with the annual contract, or... $105 on a monthly contract!

colejohnson66··on Apple/macOS removed from official Unix registry
Makes sense; the iOS filesystem isn't exposed to the user, but macOS' is.
colejohnson66··on Theranos.world
It's impossible not to; We don't even have high resolution depth maps of the entire ocean.
colejohnson66··on US man given prison sentence for bot-farming music streams
Not necessarily. One can walk into a bank, slide a note and a bag, and (hopefully) walk out. No threats involved. Still a federal crime.

Paying taxes is a tad different than being a DoD contractor.
colejohnson66··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I used to. In the "golden days" of "there's an app for that", I would peruse the App Store looking for new games. I spend hundreds of dollars on games doing that. Now, the only games you see really are shovelware or subscription garbage.
colejohnson66··on Can gzip be a language model?
Even German has issues with "letters surrounded by spaces". They love to smash words together to get one giant word.

colejohnson66··on What Sun got wrong
If you're looking for rad hardened boards, you're not a "consumer" in the general sense of the word.
colejohnson66··on I said no and Apple said yes
In vast parts of America, the "local PC shop" doesn't exist. It's BestBuy's GeekSquad (of dubious quality) or Apple's Genius Bar. There might be a repair shop somewhere, but most of the time, they just repair cracked screens.
colejohnson66··on I said no and Apple said yes
And System76 charges you just as "absurdly" as Apple. But people don't complain about the price there like you see with Apple.
colejohnson66··on I asked Meta’s Muse for its filesystem and it sent me 6.8GB
It's been like this since programming was "invented". Managers and business minds have, for decades, tried to remove the need for programmers. "If we provide a detailed enough spec, why do we need programmers?"

For example, COBOL's big shtick was that non-programmers could write code using a contrived English dialect, and things would work. Decades of no-code or low-code languages have come and gone. AI is just the hip new thing because it actually manages to produce results - just of dubious quality half the time.

colejohnson66··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
Are you sure that wasn't the VPN's fault?
colejohnson66··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Chinese scammers have gotten good at abusing those "codes" by having a list of "known good" codes and printing them on multiple units. And because those holographic codes some companies used are printed in China, the scammers just use the same equipment during the night shift.

colejohnson66··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
AMD does market segmentation and limits consumer chips to dual-channel. You need to cough up the dough and get Threadripper for quad-channel. Or even more for Threadripper Pro to get octa-channel.
colejohnson66··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
Thankfully, this is changing. Win32's 'A' ANSI/ASCII APIs now support UTF-8 if your app declares such a wish. https://stackoverflow.com/a/69181417/1350209
colejohnson66··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
But by then, the 4-byte limit of UTF-8 will itself have ossified. Even today, reverting back to the 6-byte limit is nigh impossible.
