collingreen··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
I wish I knew more to share but I've read about a few things from floating mines as I think the comment was implying to "jumping" mines that are on the ground but launch or shoot up at low altitude aircraft to uav "loitering munitions" (not really a "mine" but the point is roughly the same).

Some random googling:

collingreen··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
Don't worry, this time it will be totally different.

Snark aside, I wish you the best and hope you don't get laid off in the next round. Do good work, keep your network and resume fresh, and hope for the best.

collingreen··on ICE wants robot dogs. Boston Dynamics' workers urge company to 'cancel the sale'
Im not sure if it's hilarious or sad to hear "I didn't think the ~leopards~ robot dogs would eat MY face!"
collingreen··on How Block Blast harvests its players for ad money
Folks aren't generally expecting this kind of thing in my personal experience either. I wonder if it's something about people not expecting lies/deceit/abuse they haven't personally thought of before. We all can consider lying or stealing or even picking a pocket but very few consider massive, sociopathic abuse and corruption so it doesn't trigger that suspicion sometimes.

I cannot get people in my life to take any digital privacy seriously. A good example is when I couldn't convince a friend about the LG TV sampling your screen and phoning home, even with all the articles recently. I think this is why we like magic, fall for scams, and don't demand more from our politicians.

collingreen··on EA is shutting down BioWare
They aren't confused about how difficult it is to avoid same sex options in game. They spelled it out clearly - they decided "mainstream appeal" should not even bring up the option and doing so is probably pressure from people they don't like ("activists").

Karens aren't misunderstanding how to mind their own business or live-and-let-live; they are trying to enforce what they see as (or wish were) social norms and don't give a damn about the perspective of the folks on the receiving end of their chirping.

collingreen··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
This is a thing already
collingreen··on The Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving
Yes but wasn't she only convicted of defrauding investors and no harm was found to customers or other businesses like the partnership with walgreens?
collingreen··on Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
It means a group of people unlikely to be stopped and turned away at that gate. My assumption is white, middle class, dressed boring but clean, decent car without damage, with young kid(s), no/light tattoos, no motorcyckes in the back and no drug/booze/gun stickers or visible stuff. Basically someone the Karen's won't call to complain about.

Other people deserve access to public land too but might not pass the vibe check of the private guards, which is what op was lamenting as well.

collingreen··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
I think most folks are actually in the middle and generally agree. Anyone who thinks one of the us political parties is completely innocent is lying, either to you or themselves.

That being said, I think it's worth noticing if one party does more bad things than the other and I also think speaking up with your values is worth it and maybe even a duty we owe the people who built this country before us.

Either way, your first responsibility is your own mental health so you have full support from this internet stranger.

collingreen··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
Don't forget that social security has been raided and won't even be available for those of us reaching middle age right now and the people we keep electing who say they will do something about it have shown over and over and over that they actually won't.

Anomie plus helplessness plus a feeling of a rug pull of the laws/equality/character of our country. I am not suicidal but wow I get it.

collingreen··on Character.ai has initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Going around consumer protection law is the claim for a terrible practice, obviously not "hiring people".
collingreen··on Character.ai has initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy
It's silly or misleading to imply nothing has changed in this administration compared to the last one with regard to enforcement of laws and regulations. So many laws changed or ignored and regulatory agencies gutted, dropped, or silenced. The very next link on hn after this article for me is about the cftc being told not to investigate certain oil deals.

Please don't try to convince people to accept the current abuses of the system as inevitable or "both sides" when they clearly aren't.

collingreen··on Character.ai has initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy
I think the point is that it is an acquihire in purpose (want to team, not the assets) but would be blocked by the government so they did a thing that looks a LOT like an acquisition (paid off the shareholders, took the team) without technically being one specifically in order to avoid regulation. It's an "aquihire" in everything except name and the issue is that it was done in order to get around consumer protection laws. Google got what they wanted. The investors got what they wanted. The people got screwed.
collingreen··on Nitter: Update Oct 10th seeking funding and legal help
I was following along with your sentiment until the last, childish paragraph which really took the wind out of the sails.

I guess your point is you support things, not on a legal /impartial basis but on your perception of underdog/righteousness. Also, people who don't understand your initial post are psychopaths.

Fair enough, but that's a pretty shaky foundation upon which to build the law.

collingreen··on Nitter: Update Oct 10th seeking funding and legal help
Are you sure? Post doesn't mention "it would be hard", it says commenter thinks it would be unreasonable.
collingreen··on What should we tell our students?
This only makes any sense if youre happy dropping most folks from higher education.

You want adults to be very disciplined and rational. That sounds great but are most of the adults in your own life experience at this level? They certainly aren't for me (I'm not sure I am at this level).

collingreen··on What should we tell our students?
Such a dumb analogy.

Maybe "people who need to be able to make decisions about rocket use should understand them deeply not just ride on them"

collingreen··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Great examples. I understand these concepts as a lay person and I think most others can understand them too and therefore think they should be reported.
collingreen··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Seems easy enough to report multiple numbers and be clear on what water comes in (can even separate initial filling/construction from ongoing usage) vs what gets lost and what comes out as waste. I think people can understand this and it isn't a good enough reason to not share the numbers.
collingreen··on Show HN: AI search for every photo and every frame of video on macOS
I totally agree and I'm guilty of producing some electron crap. I think the ai explosion can be greatly improved by a new easy-for-ai but high performance and consistent ui paradigm. Would love to see a "what would html look like if it was designed for apps instead of documents from the first day" become really popular with the ai models without becoming too hard to read.

Tall order but would love to get my cpu back!

collingreen··on We're going to need default hard budget caps on pretty much everything
Isn't that a soft limit? I guess it's a hard limit from the "zero additional cost" perspective but sift from the "stuff still works but in a degraded state" perspective.
collingreen··on Show HN: AI search for every photo and every frame of video on macOS
Because you haven't rereleased your own fork in rust yet! The "LLMs can do it" cuts both ways. If that doesn't sound worth your time then it's silly to rudely suggest it is worth someone else's.
collingreen··on Show HN: AI search for every photo and every frame of video on macOS
Would require you to be locked in to the one embedding model in the camera though and cameras would need to use the same or be incompatible. Would be fine with a standard model like CLIP but would leave a lot of potential on the table compared to a good way to do your own embedding for everything.
collingreen··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
If you only want to support causes you think will already win without your support, stick to watching your favorite sports teams.

You have a clear desire for change and exactly one of the two parties you mentioned has proven to take action in line with that change.

Yes it's hard and annoying and it shouldn't have to take a bunch of good people sacrificing their time and energy just to hold the jerks at a stalemate, but that's the way it is. Apathy is a powerful weapon when the motivated few are opposed by the unmotivated many.

I also wish we had fairness and antitrust and I pretty much do nothing but whine online. I need to dedicate significant time and energy if I want to see things not get worse and I recognize I'm not doing my part so don't take this as admonishment from me, just sympathy.

collingreen··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
What is the ulterior motive?

This sounds like lightly self deprecating nod to something cringey done in their earlier career. What have I missed?

collingreen··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
Oof maybe I'm losing my ai-dar. This didn't rub me the wrong way on phrasing.
collingreen··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
Very well written both in prose and tone. I'm glad she decided to tell this story. If the author isn't a professional writer I think she could be.

This is a great "behind the scenes" style look at the actual people behind a viral clip. Luckily they have an extremely strong relationship to help soften the blows here, I'm not sure an average (not even bad!) relationship could come out of something like this unscathed.

There's something feral in us that comes out from time to time, especially online from the safety of our screens. I found the announcers within the range of good fun but when it gets to people reaching out to break up their marriage or telling him to kill himself it becomes really sobering.

I think this is part of what people are calling the lonlieness epidemic - despite thousands of screaming voices the whole thing makes me feel hollow and hopeless.

collingreen··on Microsoft abandons personal AI chatbot race with Copilot reboot
Some of us have internalized it! It's like walking around in the twilight zone or the bodysnatchers movie sometimes. In a dream society we could agree on some values and argue about how to direct our shared efforts. In this one we can't agree on values or even facts. It's equal parts maddening and terrifying.

We need help in avoiding the worst futures that could come from this.

collingreen··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
That must have been a crazy moment for you when you first saw it and a big sigh moment for whomever had to explain it to you the first time. Thanks for sharing this; it made me smile!
collingreen··on Plan mode is dead
I would have agreed a few months ago before opus 5 but I'm back to plan mode and lots of the old tricks trying to get that insolent model to follow instructions. 5.5 so far is better but certainly doesn't feel under my control (had it go off and read other repos and make changes just yesterday while in "plan mode").
