I think it's more nuanced than that. Yes, it's true that the economics are horrible. But it's also true that consumer startups are hard. And then when you tack on legal fees and product changes due to policy concerns, it becomes impossible. Maybe the lesson is that the world isn't ready for a product that targeted minors with fake friends based on existing IP. Maybe it never will be.

read the Cloudflare post, basically the opposite of that: https://blog.cloudflare.com/deno-joins-cloudflare/

broadly speaking, it _is_ factually incorrect to say that. Censorship is the government controlling what information the public can access. No one on "the left" is trying to pass a law saying that people should get jail time for using the R-word.

Political correctness, woke/cancel culture, whatever you want to call it, is not censorship. And it's not splitting hairs to say this; words have meaning and though 'censorship' is particularly abused, it is still quite different from me looking down on someone who uses the R slur on X (as I do daily)

Open* is not Open

yup, Chad is super authentic, WYSIWYG. Truly a loss for Open Source and tech in general.

I wish him well and I don't blame him at all. He already gave more of himself to advancing OSS sustainability than probably anyone else on the planet (might be room for debate, but I can't think of who else is even in the discussion).

this is especially problematic because now hackers have a comprehensive list of the most gullible people on the planet

say what you will about TBPN, but it was never objective journalism

in practice, I can have ~infinte tabs in Safari on my M1 MBP. I'll have multiple windows with hundreds of tabs open and I've never seen it stutter once.

It's actually enabling my worst tab-hoarding tendencies. In the Intel days I'd pay a performance price at some point and have to tend to my tabs, but now they just keep propagating....

without knowing the methods of that survey, if that 16.5% was self-reported you can expect that the actual number is even higher

This is exactly on point. Also, his day job is shilling AI companies.

this is revolting. Sure he’s an autocrat, blah blah blah, but he’s just so tacky

since when are these IPO numbers?

> The company reported a net loss of $282.5 million on a total revenue of $68.6 million in the six months ended June 30, compared with a net loss of $41.4 million on a revenue of $74.3 million year earlier.

All right, let's sum up. This year we explored the failure of democracy. How our social scientists brought our world to the brink of chaos. We talked about the veterans, how they took control and established the stability that has lasted for generations since. You know these facts, but have I taught you anything of value this year?

it will be government funded, but just not our government, and not in our universities
