comrade1234··on Barcelona unrest: how to fabricate a protest in the age of TikTok
Besides Ireland and parts of the UK Halloween traditionally hasn't been a thing in Europe and some people are adamantly against it being celebrated. But here in Switzerland in the recent years it's become the night where teenagers/students go out late and vandalize and be nuisances, start fires, etc.

This year it's on a Saturday and there's also general unrest with frequent protests (Israel/Palestine, Kurds, students, etc etc etc) so it's probably going to be worse than usual.

comrade1234··on Police are using AI to pull over drivers for 'suspicious' behavior
"...she was pulled over by an officer who claimed she had spent too much time driving in the left lane."

Throw the book at her!

comrade1234··on Half of R/sales cold email posts in 2026 were written by people selling it
Is this about something on Reddit? Or R programming language? Nevermind I don't care.
comrade1234··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
I use ai as I program every day and I find it useful. I also use it for tech support for myself and my home server. The other day I used it to make some changes in my server and I felt like I accomplished tons. But when I thought about it in the evening I realized I could have got it done with less time if I had just read some documents - the ai advice was often out-of-date and I notice that while programming too - for example, I use the spring-ai framework which has changed massively between versions and the ai always gives old advice....

So on average I would say I'm getting about as much work done now as before ai.

comrade1234··on US designates helium as a critical material
I thought during the last trump administration they got rid of the helium reserve and sold it all off? Or am I taking crazy pills?!
comrade1234··on Somebody please stop the spam texts
Politicians are allowed to send spam texts, emails, phone calls. They exempted themselves from all of laws prohibiting it. Just block it.
comrade1234··on Prisoner loses challenge to an Australian state’s ban on inmates eating Vegemite
From the article it's not clear if the problem with the drug-sniffing dogs is false-positives or false-negatives. So don't start hiding your drugs in vegemite just yet.
comrade1234··on The new iPad mini
I looked at the tech specs but I don't see how much ram it has. I ended getting more storage than I needed on my pro because it also gave it more ram.
comrade1234··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
They also have an execellent iOS app that I use whenever I'm hiking.
comrade1234··on JetBrains Thinkrail
So is this DOA? I use IntelliJ for work every day and I have a project that will work for agentic coding but that I want to experiment with...
comrade1234··on Where the Romans Fought (interactive map)
Shitty ai website with impossible navigation, on iOS mobile at least.
comrade1234··on Serbia's Vucic concedes election defeat in historic win for student movement
This is great! I never understood the Serbian view of allying with a loser country like Russia. I assume it was all corruption and oligarchs.
comrade1234··on [dead]
It would be interesting if the poor could use these new tools that the rich are giving us to take their wealth from them. There's precedence - the longbow, the printing press, and open source software.
comrade1234··on How is music possible
That doesn't really explain the popularity at times of clicks-and-beeps music and some other modern music.
comrade1234··on [dead]
There's always grifters trying to make money off the contra-view of a current fad.
comrade1234··on Tell HN: I unknowingly broke the PHP RCE embargo. I am sorry
So who will be sued and/or state prosecuted?
comrade1234··on United Airlines CEO Calls for National Wealth Tax
We have a wealth tax in parts of Switzerland. It works for normal people like me where you can value my house and bank accounts easily. But it starts to have problems when you're ultra-wealthy and you have to value my artwork - paintings, sculptures, jewelry...

Overall I think it's fine. I think where I live it's .75%. But there's a giant hotel where the fifa executives live and the owner keeps getting in trouble for importing art and undervaluing it.

comrade1234··on When Do We Become the Person We Ought to Be?
Move out of CA.
comrade1234··on When Do We Become the Person We Ought to Be?
I feel much more at peace now that my sex drive has decreased. Before this feeling it was my primary goal and I was very successful but now I couldn't care less about sex.

So I often wonder about yogis and saints - are they better humans than me? But i dont think so when I read about people like mlk jr and jfk and how they were terrible people when it came to women, even worse than me.

comrade1234··on Delays for Pull Requests and Webhook deliveries
So much stuff is down today for php fixes. I can't even do Duolingo!
comrade1234··on Despite Iran's Attacks, Gulf Oil Exports Exceed Prewar Levels
It went from $60,000/day for a tanker to over a $million/day for insurance, danger pay, etc.
comrade1234··on Finland Buying a Million Landmines
From previous articles about this, they won't be deployed now. They will be deployed if needed.
comrade1234··on Whatever Happened to Fire Escapes
What would burn in those manhattan buildings? Are the internal walls wood?

I don't know what would burn in the building I live in now. It's all cement construction. The internal walls are brick with gypsum over. The window coverings and furniture is flame resistant. I suppose I'd be screwed if my downstairs neighbor had a bunch of flammable stuff though. Also we have an underground parking lot full of cars... maybe I should invest in a ladder.

comrade1234··on Making chicken transparent using Dorito dust
I once found a Cheeto-shaped thing in a Cheetos bag that was nothing but Cheeto-coating. It was wonderful. Can't imagine what it did to my insides.
comrade1234··on Super Intelligence
Super cringe.
comrade1234··on California is building a $400M shield for Yosemite's most dangerous highway
"“There’s not anything like this in the world,” said Corey Casey, Caltrans’ project manager for the shed."

I guess he's never been to Europe?

comrade1234··on New York City’s horse-drawn carriages expected to take their last trot
> He's doing this because an Indian tourist was killed by a horse - they are quite notorious for being hit by trains, jagannatha etc.

Is that real or just a meme? I mean the part about Indians being notorious for being hit by trains.

comrade1234··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
Tell your downloader (in my case qbittorrent) to not download .exe, .scr, .zip, etc, etc, etc. It’s been this way for years. You do have to clean out qbittorrent every few days so that sonarr will search again, so that’s a pain. But hey, I’m pirating media. Someone trying to scam me at the same time is expected.
comrade1234··on Switzerland proposes banning profiling-based ads to minors
The billboards here, in Zurich at least, are quite small and tasteful. The design museum even has exhibits at times of them.

For example: https://monocle.com/design/how-zurichs-poster-culture-has-tu...

comrade1234··on What driving across Europe costs in tolls, vignettes, bridges and fuel
The money goes to road infrastructure, yes, including a road tunnel they wanted to build under lake Geneva which would be better as a train tunnel.
