container··on Doge cuts to USAid blamed for 300k deaths – most of them children
Where exactly do you see the dishonesty here? Is it just the title?
container··on Even parental leave in Europe could be better
Also, it could have just said "France" instead of "Europe".
container··on DDoS attacks slow down Citizens' Initiative signing in Finland
In case anyone is wondering, the (only) article linked in this post only talks about the bank Nordea (which some users might use to verify their identity on the initiative site)
container··on The bullet effects in Terminator 2 weren’t CGI
I don't think you could do a mirror with screen-space reflections.
container··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
I kind of dropped out of Linux audiosome time ago. Can I ask why both pipewire and jack? I thought pipewire was supposed to implement most (all?) the stuff that jackd does.
container··on Life before smartphones (2020)
I tried taking a photo of the moon a while ago on my phone, and I couldn't really get it to look decent. I don't know if most smartphone users even know how to adjust the exposure setting even if any of that helped. And if they saw something as interesting as a UFO, I don't think they would figure it out on the spot either. I'm not sure if automatic settings would cut it on a fancier phone.
container··on Finland provides housing and counseling to the homeless (2020)
Beyond the clickbait headline, even the article didn't say it was.
container··on Psilocybin repairs 'brains cells damaged by depression' in mice: study
Yeah, that was my point. And the word 'pain' actually reminded me of cluster headaches, which are treated with psilocybin exceptionally well. And yes, many people will experience long term changes without having suffered any illness (diagnosed or not). It's just that under the topic of this thread, well assume posts are about diagnosed depression.
container··on Psilocybin repairs 'brains cells damaged by depression' in mice: study
If you plot out all usage globally, recreational use is probably going to be the most common case. However, being recreational is not a property of the substance itself, so the term you both were using is misleading in that sense.
container··on Psilocybin repairs 'brains cells damaged by depression' in mice: study
Great! But to be clear, you are talking about diagnosed depression, right?
container··on Dolphin Emulator - Dolphin MEGA Progress Report: April and May 2021
I feel like that makes a lot of sense. You're getting the N64 emulation for free from Nintendo there. Of course, Dolphin has to be good enough to emulate the emulator correctly, but somehow seems easier than emulating a complex native GC/Wii game.
container··on Enhancing Photorealism Enhancement
>its never going to be low latency enough to be viable Why is that? Just because it's expensive in terms of computation? I can't see why latency wouldn't improve with framerate.
container··on Praise for Alpine Linux
I think compiling usually comes in when it's not in the repo or proprietary.
container··on Pixel Shaders in Windows Terminal
I'm not sure what it means to "get the basics right". I've just been wondering how it can be so hard to text-zoom in Putty. I don't know about Window Terminal, but at least in gnome-terminal you just press ^+. In Putty, it seems that I have to 1. Click the Putty window corner 2. Select 'Change settings' 3. Pick the 'Appearance' section in the meanu 4. Click the 'Change' button under the font section 5. Pick or type the font size 6. Press 'OK' 7. press 'Apply'
container··on Software That Sucks Less
Are you really sure it's appropriate to compare Newton and Jobs either?
container··on The mythical “fast” web page
I don't know if current super low-end Android phones have what it takes to browse the web, but on all the devices I've had, all web browsers have been consistently unusable. Maybe that's changed in the last couple of years.
container··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
I wouldn't start too much speculation around a comment that started with 'probably'. But in any case, I'm also a Finn, and my contract also refers to that agreement. Still, I don't think I even know anyone who just drops what they're doing when their hours are up for the day or the week. It seems that everyone's working around the clock, even on weekends and holidays. And just like you would expect by now, people take pride in it and boast about it too. Sure, that's pathological, but I really can't even imagine working 9 to 5 and then disconnecting for the rest of the time, union or not. I think you're considered exceptional in Finnish IT if you can do that.
container··on The cost of fixed-line broadband in 206 countries
It also isn't cheap in most comparable countries. I think that a quick look at the interactive map show some correlation between labor cost & broadband price (that's probably why Norway stands out, for example), but it's also obvious that it doesn't dictate the price .
container··on RIP Google Music
If you've bought albums or tracks from Google Play Music, it lets you download them as mp3. I wonder if that option will now be removed. In that case, this would be the time to download and backup all your purchased music. Maybe it's better to do it on a proper computer too, since Google says "Signing out of your account will remove downloaded music from your device.", although that might only apply to subscription tracks on mobile - I don't think it's completely clear. container··on NASA WebGL of the Universe
Yeah, that's exactly why they're focusing on the Milky Way and not the whole universe, and thus the title is a little bit off.
container··on NASA WebGL of the Universe
Cool stuff. However, maybe the post could be titled "NASA WebGL of the galaxy", since it only seems to focus on the Milky Way.
container··on NASA WebGL of the Universe
Ok, but how? I haven't noticed any problem yet.
container··on EMule 0.60a
Yes, perhaps those people are typically bad, but you know you should focus your criticism on the argument itself.
container··on Knuth versus Email (1999)
It seems that the current POTUS knows how to use Twitter directly, which is probably generally considered more modern and "in-touch" than email. Maybe, then, the perception of him that you described wouldn't be based on the technology he uses to communicate.
container··on Knuth versus Email (1999)
That sounds a little surprising to me. Are you sure that weren't even any government or university machines online before early 1995?
container··on Blender 2.80
When exactly did you try it? It has changed significantly at least a few times in the last 10 years.
container··on If Software Is Funded from a Public Source, Its Code Should Be Open Source
Could you be more specific about what you can imagine? People looking at the code and finding exploits that way?
container··on Rough sleeping has been almost eradicated in Helsinki
It doesn't seem that they are. And as for the claim in the article that "no-one is begging", anyone who has spent more than 15 minutes in Helsinki knows that's not true. Most of the people begging might have come from abroad, but they're there. And when it comes to the statistics, I found this reference:

"In addition to the homelessness visible in statistics, the existence of undocumented migrants is a phenomenon connected to homelessness. An undocumented migrant is a person, who does not have a legal right of residence and whose residence in Finland is not known to or permitted by the authorities. Different estimates by experts on the number of undocumented migrants in Finland vary between 500 and 3,000 people [...]" (PDF report downloaded from https://tinyurl.com/ycybdjtc)

Edit: Additionally, EU citizens may legally stay in Finland for months, are many are known to do so, even if they can unfortunately only make a living panhandling

container··on Rough sleeping has been almost eradicated in Helsinki
Though they may be located in Helsinki, I think the people doing that sort of stuff usually don't have citizenship.
container··on Windows 7 patch for Meltdown enabled arbitrary reads and writes in kernel memory
The article doesn't seem to indicate that MinWin started after Windows 7. If there has been a fundamental kernel change effort after Win7 (I'm not aware of one), maybe it has a different name?
