coolThingsFirst··on Show HN: Jev Cards, Can you beat a vision model at a picture quiz?
Wait a minute Orca is a Dolphin?

Damn.

coolThingsFirst··on Microsoft and CMU Team Up to Train Early Career Software Engineers
how?
coolThingsFirst··on Making chicken transparent using Dorito dust
Too much Math for not much of a result.
coolThingsFirst··on Microsoft and CMU team up to train early career software engineers
Now that you have learnt Software Engineering, hunting for a job is easy just make 10^10^10^10 job applications.
coolThingsFirst··on More Powerful Than Ever, (can't find work)
Sad but true.
coolThingsFirst··on '500-hour' Order of the Sinking Star is as complex and exhausting as it sounds
Yeah, interesting game. Some puzzles are hard. I am interested in the programming of it.

How are the crystals made translucent like that? They almost feel alive. Is this shaders or just assets?

The game looks top down, but is 2.5 dimensional. How is this made? Is it just the assets or something more complicated is done in terms of programming.

coolThingsFirst··on Show HN: How random are you?
Curious to know what model they use for speech recognition?

Not familiar with the sota if someone can chime in.

coolThingsFirst··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
Nuts i thought Hetzner had the cheapest options.
coolThingsFirst··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C (2025)
STL is amazing and the people that designed it were very smart.

Problem is C++ has many features which I likely won't be able to understand in this lifetime. But using C-style C++ is nuts.

Just the extra of STL is basically the C that C should have been. It's a shame not to have a string type or use brittle macros.

coolThingsFirst··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026)
Well the clowns get a free pass from HN moderators so I guess it's ok
coolThingsFirst··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026)
Odoo still shamelessly asking for passport pictures for a job application!
coolThingsFirst··on The death of web development education
CS students, we wrote syntax on paper during exams. Same could be done.

By BS, i mean tsconfig files and caddy boilerplate.

coolThingsFirst··on The death of web development education
LLMs made it easy to skip the BS. Once you know programmingh you don't need hours and hours of content. Just the mental model for and you're good to go.

If it weren't for the job losses I'd never want to go back to 2015 or so to go back and forth on SO questions and answers and spend days on a boilerplate issue.

coolThingsFirst··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026)
welcome to the "good times"
coolThingsFirst··on If we do not stop to help each other, what do we become?
Good idea but hard to get initial users since everyone will be reluctant to share private info with new company.
coolThingsFirst··on If we do not stop to help each other, what do we become?
SO people were one of the most stuck idiots I have ever seen. I found the opposite thing, for easy questions they'd upvote and answer very soon but for harder questions they'd downvote it because they didn't know the solution.

I'm very happy SO is done and dusted with.

Thing is Quora which was supposed to be a forum of people with real credentials also went down the drain because it succumbed to low quality questions and answers. I guess we need a LinkedIn like place where people with real credentials and experience can contribute to deep discussions. Discord won't cut it since it's not index-able.

coolThingsFirst··on Ollaya – Ollama for open-source, Jev-style decision models
Can you explain how 0 shot classifiers work how come it isn’t trained on my data how does it know when issue is urgent lets say?
coolThingsFirst··on Why didn't anybody tell me about Redis hash slots?
What do they use to make those visualizations?

I see them pretty frequently.

coolThingsFirst··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
What company is that, are you hiring remote?
coolThingsFirst··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
What a load of BS, if your churn rate is so high that you always have to hire that's a sign of a terribly toxic workplace.
coolThingsFirst··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
No need to wait, you can die now to make room for those younger.
coolThingsFirst··on Training a 4B model to produce 81% faster query plans than Postgres
why is this write-up so long?

Need 5 days just to go through it.

coolThingsFirst··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
I'm working through: https://modernaicourse.org/.

I appreciate that it makes me revisit some math which i've forgotten like directional derivative and why gradient points to highest ascent.

Interesting but hard as well.

coolThingsFirst··on 'Fingerprints' inside the Sun could reveal if it once swallowed a planet
how hysterical would it be if the Sun decided to pull the earth into it.

Discussions on X, Reddit and HN titled "Is this it" or "Heat death is medically comfortable".

Crazy stuff.

coolThingsFirst··on The Death of Shame Is Tearing Us Apart
Shame for what?

OF prostitutes and iShowSpeed make more money than neuroscientists. There are more incentives to be a bozo than an educated “pillar of the community”.

coolThingsFirst··on Python sets and dictionaries can have quadratic-time performance
Lemire back again with CS101 insights.

Next, he will teach us doubles have finite precision.

coolThingsFirst··on How I feel about AI
Sure.

Let's assume the claims are true. AI already has access to agents and can control computers. Finding backdoors to banking and compute resources would be fairly trivial.

But you ask how can AI do things in the physical world without having a body, assume it can't. It can pay to people to do things for me. Imagine an AI run website that starts to pay people for things it needs to do in the physical world. Very suddenly it has access to the physical world as well.

You can't just pull the plug since there's no single plug to pull. What if it replicates itself on 1000 machines without your knowledge. It's really not far fetched how AI could basically gain access to capital and rule the world.

coolThingsFirst··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
Yeah ditching cars is very hard in some places where public transport is not good. (US)

But I am seeing that it's not that hopeless by 2030 43% of energy would come from renewable sources like solar. Maybe there's still hope. It would be profoundly stupid if as a species we died off because we couldn't curb CO2 emissions.

coolThingsFirst··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
why is it that for the ozone layer we got together and undid the damage but for climate change we don't?

is it too politicized, are the required changes too damaging to the economy to start agressively implementing them?

coolThingsFirst··on Bye, Bye GitHub
It’s only fair when the big guy steals intellectual property from the small guy.
