coolcaseon How to live on $432 a month in America

> I'm going to guess that you're a really good shape that a 2 km walk isn't a big deal, but I don't think most Americans can do that.

Shit that's horrifying.

I have health issues and walking 2km a day to try to help fix. So I see 2km a day as basic. 6-10km run a day would be "fit" IMO. things as humans are designed to walk.

Living in suburbia means I have to walk "for the sake of it" although I cam make it useful e.g. get some milk!

As for cold. Anything above minus 5 should be OK just wear stuff like skiiers wear which can be got cheap off brand.

Should be budgeted though right.

No mystery really.

Looks like the 72/90 is actually from shadow banning.

But to answer whose opinions do you want to ban? Who is speaking correctly?

coolcaseon When good pseudorandom numbers go bad

Thanks. So sounds like the same machine should run the same calculations and get the same results each time, but differences may appear between machines.

coolcaseon Find Your People

Startups might be the new SDE1 while trying to do stuff outside of capitalism might be the new startup.

Not in terms of financial reward of course. But in terms of rewarding career off the beaten path.

Personally while I want to do a startup I am finding the boring path you mention quite fascinating!

coolcaseon 'Turbocharged' Mitochondria Power Birds' Epic Migratory Journeys

25Mhz to 33MHz. Oh yeaaaaaaa!

coolcaseon 'Turbocharged' Mitochondria Power Birds' Epic Migratory Journeys

Do you have any feeling as to why it only lasted 4 months. Sounds unusual to have the spot on CFS like experience for such a short time so wonder if there was a trigger to recovery.

coolcaseon 'Turbocharged' Mitochondria Power Birds' Epic Migratory Journeys

Root causes I suspect. The problem of a syndrome.

coolcaseon Tallest Wooden Wind Turbine

Was a root cause done on that? Was it due to wind power?

coolcaseon 'Turbocharged' Mitochondria Power Birds' Epic Migratory Journeys

Wouldn't mind some bird mitochondria!

coolcaseon When good pseudorandom numbers go bad

Thanks! So machine differences in their FP units drives the entropy, and the code doesn't handle that when picking eigenvectors?

It is good for ballparking. PR count is more interesting as if it is high it means you must have a good CI CD pipeline. I worked places where there were limits on commits a day due to monolith plus master CI/CD taking an hour. You then end up thinking of strategies like "I'll do that in the afternoon and get it to that state and it gets merged at this time" and so on. Which is inefficient.

coolcaseon 1,145 pull requests per day

Not every PR is a feature. There will be lots of laying groundwork. Stuff going in but not yet activated as a feature flag. Small changes often make roll back easier. Regressions easier to detect. You can blue green your little change and auto detect if it is causing latency or availability issues on 1% then 10% etc. of traffic. This means you can early detect and do easy roll backs as nothing much has changed.

Downside: your code is always a Frankenstein monster of feature flags that need to be cleared up! But hey that's more PRs to boast about.

coolcaseon 1,145 pull requests per day

Yeah I get itchy if the pipeline to prod ain't working for more than 24h for one microservice. I love continuous deployment.

coolcaseon Silly job interview questions in Haskell

Nice. C looks like a safe language with the casual using an int as a bool.

coolcaseon When good pseudorandom numbers go bad

I don't grok this but if you had to describe it in a nutshell, is this because of a race condition? Differences in HW? Floating point ops have some randomness built in?

coolcaseon I Built My Own Audio Player

More like the country bans the sales of cannnabis but you are allowed to grow your own, so you buy some lamps etc.

coolcaseon Does Earth have two high-tide bulges on opposite sides? (2014)

I agree, I meant to add "as a mind bending exercise to realize how complex nature is!"

coolcaseon Ask HN: Do you have a side project you're getting tired of?

If you could get some YT influencers to take it a look (or sponsor them) I think that might work than app store optimisation. There is too much competition on app/play stores even 10 years ago when I last looked.

coolcaseon Does Earth have two high-tide bulges on opposite sides? (2014)

Try to get your head around this while simultaneously not thinking of gravity as a force but curvature in spacetime.

This is where l33t hax0r originated from. People will just say Filistine Gaz1 or some other workaround.

coolcaseon CERN gears up to ship antimatter across Europe

It would be terrible. But no more terrible than a FCL of shien crap.

coolcaseon CERN gears up to ship antimatter across Europe

What's that in dB(modern nukes)?

coolcaseon CERN gears up to ship antimatter across Europe

Not technically a cat. Evolved from the ships cat.

coolcaseon The scientific “unit” we call the decibel

https://www.osha.gov/noise

Maybe the reference is implied though?

coolcaseon Ask HN: How do you promote your personal projects with a limited budget?

Depends on the project. For an AI code generator like yours it is hard because there is so much noise in this space to stand out. If it really hits with Java devs, maybe speak about it at Java conferences? But make sure it's a kick assignment product first.

coolcaseon The scientific “unit” we call the decibel

They are units too. When you have regulations relating to sound they will say how many dB the limit is.

coolcaseon ZEUS – A new two-petawatt laser facility at the University of Michigan

For the most energetic, half a kilowatt hour makes me think of a high setting microwave for 30 minutes. Must be enough to roast a chicken?

coolcaseon In the past year my illustration business has dropped more half

Yeah "dev" is as informative as "sales guy" which can be anything from a used car salesman to head of sales for a large corp.
