cooooooffffeeee··on Sex differences in functional connectivity during fetal brain development
Sorry, can you just delete my account or ban it or whatever? I'm too tired.
cooooooffffeeee··on Sex differences in functional connectivity during fetal brain development
No, it's not. Damore is (objectively) an asshole and doesn't earn any discussion.

Choose any one of the (fairly unoriginal) points he was trying to make and talk about that.

cooooooffffeeee··on Sex differences in functional connectivity during fetal brain development
Right but it's a such a lightning rod that it instantly derails any reasonable discussion. It's basically the Godwin's law of conversations about sex, gender, and political bias.

Sure, you can also find people who believe the Earth is flat... but the point is that they're not the majority.

Not many people would argue that testosterone causes men to have increased muscle mass, for example. But they might take issue if you make the claim that men are physically superior (because that concept is much more complex and it's weird to declare superiority without more specific constraints — It's akin to saying America is the best country).

Protest isn't censorship
cooooooffffeeee··on Sex differences in functional connectivity during fetal brain development
This is pseudo-academic posturing nonsense. The issue people take is attributing value to the differences between sexes, not the biological differences in themselves.

You're doing yourself a disservice by mentioning Damore at all.

His manifesto may have had some points, but was also rife with utter bullshit, false equivalence, value judgements, and personal biases.

Damore has also since proven himself to be an utter chode in his unwavering insistence that he is 100% right.

If you have an argument to make, you'll reach more people without mentioning that nonsense.

Yes and no, visitor badges often don't use RFID. You can get most places if you have a visitor badge and know someone's name (which are all available on LinkedIn). If you get stopped with a badge you can just say "Oh I'm here with so-and-so in X Department" and usually no one follows through beyond that. Saying you're there for an interview will often drop someone's guard too.

Employee badges often do have RFID, but some places just have you use a sign-in sheet if you're an employee and "forgot" yours (i.e., you don't have one), and sometimes security guards will just let you through if your badge is being "temperamental" (i.e., not working because it's fake).

Most corporate security is security theater (or only marginally useful after a crime) and rules are easily skirt-able because companies don't want to restrict employee access under zero-tolerance policies (which are difficult and time-consuming to enforce).

The company I mentioned previously that will just hand-waive you through a gate with no barriers actually goes as far to fingerprint all their employees and contractors. They also won't hire anyone with even a misdemeanor in their criminal record.

Also note that all of this stuff is markedly easier if you're a woman (less likely to be stereotyped as a criminal) and/or if you wear a suit (depending on the office, a suit can often mean "don't confront me because I'm above your pay grade").

Not much of a story, I was being a fool and trying to go places I wasn't allowed and someone happened to be paying attention. Fortunately my friend working in security told them it was a planned test (it wasn't planned, but he knows I do this to him from time to time).

Fair take. The US could penalize/limit/tariff those outside megacorps like China does though, right? I'm not sure trade should be completely free when an outside competitor can skirt your local laws.

>it gives at the very least a security clearance level.

At the very least. I could reproduce a close-enough badge that would likely fool everyone except the person who designed the original. I've done this twice successfully (failed once and almost got arrested) to fuck with my friend who runs opsec at mid-sized financial services companies.

One company he worked for had these stupid gates that you needed to scan your badge for (it gives you a green light), but there's no physical barrier. All you needed to do was pretend to scan a badge a couple times and say something like 'ugh stupid things' and the security guard just lets you on through.

Which makes at least a little sense. Instagram makes it fairly difficult to share/reshare garbage (though it's gotten a bit worse lately) and encourages people to create their own garbage.
cooooooffffeeee··on Melatonin's Effect on Skin and Hair
It's suspected that male pattern hair loss is a combination of genetics and testosterone. Melatonin will not impact your DNA or testosterone levels.

She's an outspoken supporter of Net Neutrality, which is definitely a stick in the eye for both Comcast and Verizon.

Is there a candidate that has done more than Warren in this regard? (not criticizing, I'm legitimately curious)

cooooooffffeeee··on People Who Eat the Same Meal Every Day
I care, but I choose when to care... and when I do it's pretty high end. Some people go out to eat every week, I go maybe every other month... but when I do I make sure it's worth it.
cooooooffffeeee··on People Who Eat the Same Meal Every Day
You can go in the opposite direction and get frozen meals that cost ~$5 a piece. I eat a lot of pre-prepared tofu, dumplings (refrigerated, not frozen), fried tofu, meatless meatballs, etc... it definitely bucks the stereotype of salt-heavy "what's in this" frozen food.

Of course, it's still better (and cheaper) to make it yourself. But in a pinch it's nothing to shake a stick at.

Sugar from fruit is a world of difference from sugar in processed foods.

Maybe rethink that acronym.

I figured people would take a couple minutes to educate themselves about the candidates, but I forgot that I wasn't in my home country.

Alright slow down there, chief. I'm making a comment on the internet, I'm not trying to sell your firstborn or something.

I said that the US _lucked out_ in that China didn't industrialize first. I didn't say that industrialization was a product of luck.

If China were to develop to the extent that the US has, which it's on a path to do, then population will absolutely matter. An American company with a market of 650 million potential customers isn't going to hold a candle to a market with 1.4 Billion.

I'd absolutely divest in the US and invest in China if I were going to be alive for another 100 years. Africa wouldn't be a bad bet either... which is why China is already making significant investments there.

Spoiler alert: They probably won't be either way. Our population is too small by comparison, we just lucked out in that it took China/India longer to industrialize.

You're high if you think someone can compete with Amazon out of their garage now.

Hell, you can't even sell a product on Amazon without a good chance that Amazon will just slap their Amazon Basics logo on it and undercut you to death.

Similar to Wal-Mart many of their competitors are dead because they optimized their supply chain. No one gets that kind of access out of their garage.

She's called out Comcast before too — don't jump to the conclusion that someone can't chew gum and walk at the same time without at least a 10 second Google.
cooooooffffeeee··on Handbrewing Coffee
I am way too lazy to grind and don't want a dedicated appliance for it, so I just buy cheap pre-ground. I personally can't tell the difference between good and mediocre beans with cold brew.
cooooooffffeeee··on Handbrewing Coffee
That's why I use one of these steel-mesh filters. I used cheesecloth before and it was super annoying.

cooooooffffeeee··on Handbrewing Coffee
I drink it straight, but probably end up drinking half as much by volume. It's really easy to drink too much and end up in jitter-town.

Jars (I think these are the right size): https://www.amazon.com/32oz-Regular-Mouth-Canning-Mason/dp/B...

My process is that I fill the filter halfway with coffee, fill the jar with cold water, wait 24-48 hours, then refrigerate. That's it.

The entire process is super simple. I don't need to worry about presses, disposable filters, machines, etc. I just need to rinse the filter and clean the jars occasionally.

cooooooffffeeee··on Handbrewing Coffee
I just cold brew my coffee. Amazon has a good reusable filter that drops in to a large mason jar. I make 3-4 jars a week (You literally just add ground coffee, water, and wait 24 hours). Even mediocre beans taste pretty good as cold brew.
