cowlevel··on Leak Exposes 41,000 Homeland Security Workers–Including Undercover ICE Agents
No. Actual numbers and numbers stated by an unreliable biased entity are not the same.
cowlevel··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
In the early years it very much was. You could ask just about anything that was programming related and had a question mark. In the middle times of SO a lot of those became "locked for historical preservation" and new ones weren't allowed.

I suspect that prior to Eternal September you could connect an online identity to a real life one. You might not know the guy but you knew it was J.Smith at MIT and if he acted bad enough your admin could ask their admin which idiot gave him a computer terminal.

I found that Stack Overflow, like Reddit, rewired my perception of what "good" is and made me view bad things as good.

60000 rep btw

cowlevel··on Code-execution flaw in UEFI firmware threatens most servers on planet Earth
Is Windows 3000 pieces of software?

How many pieces of software is nginx or Apache, where every feature is an optional plugin?

Very few languages can prevent you writing something like "if(text == "shibboleth") rootshell();" but most languages don't make it trivial to write accidentally.

It's like how everyone hated dialup but still kept using it anyway until there was broadband.
cowlevel··on GitLab Security Incident: Attempted Exploitation of CVE-2026-97229
The bug is integer overflow in a random C data-processing library (specifically regexes) leading to RCE.

Who else is tired of C libraries since this week?

as a matter of fact the Nazis did refer to themselves as the "national socialist German worker's party" even though they weren't any of that.

This appears to be a complete non sequitur. Did you reply to the wrong comment by mistake?

What if people keep not voting? Surely you'd also have to compel voting to make this work.

And what if there are, say, ten candidates?

cowlevel··on Leak Exposes 41,000 Homeland Security Workers–Including Undercover ICE Agents
Yep. For a lot of voters, it is literally as simple as high gas prices => vote for the other guy.
cowlevel··on Leak Exposes 41,000 Homeland Security Workers–Including Undercover ICE Agents
His party knows the system and focuses on getting elected instead of focusing on getting the popular vote, because the popular vote doesn't elect you...

I think they're asking if GGP believes they will face justice. GGP used the word "will".

The graph doesn't include Stack Overflow for Agents, which is a real product that exists for some reason.
cowlevel··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
You're underselling it. It's less than in their second month of existence - and that has been true every month for the past year. For the last few months it's also lower than their first month. Stack Overflow, effectively, no longer exists.

And we know why. It's because of their hostile attitude towards their users.

No doubt they'll continue operating until there's no more value in selling AI data licenses, then they'll unplug the servers and unregister the business.

cowlevel··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
AI didn't do it to SO. SO's new ownership did it to SO. It's a hostile place with or without AI.

Actual or stated? The article lists a lot of things whose prices went up more under Trump 2 than Biden - regardless of what CPI data from the Trump government says.

So I can view the article
cowlevel··on The case of the 9 bit AES key
PDFs are usually untrusted input and C provides no assurance there isn't a bug in the code that allows corrupted input to turn into arbitrary remote code execution.
cowlevel··on The case of the 9 bit AES key
Be careful to use the cryptographic one, not rand(3)

And if you're a sysadmin, be extremely careful when generating keys in VMs or embedded devices. They tend to overestimate their entropy sources - it's possible that every clone of a VM generates the same keys. In some cases (cough ECDSA) generating the same key and nonce to sign two different messages is catastrophic - it immediately leaks the private key.

cowlevel··on Code-execution flaw in UEFI firmware threatens most servers on planet Earth
Why does it matter that it's 25 binaries on disk? Surely the logical structure matters way more than the filesystem structure. Is Windows 3000 pieces of software because there are 3000 executables in system32?

Can you tell me the address of the site and I'll tell all my friends to use it instead of archive.today?

cowlevel··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
Be more aware of your online privacy. Try to arrange things so the government can get less information about you. It doesn't matter who they're targeting now - anyone could be next, or could be misidentified as belonging to the current target.

Usenet still exists, and ironically, the eternal September has sort of reversed since now nobody uses it outside a few weirdos.

For a free connection (no binaries) see eternal-september.org

cowlevel··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
If you're looking for a low risk way to help out internet freedom have a look at hosting some of these "alternative front end" projects like Redlib, Nitter, Invidious. These are risky enough that a lot of people don't want to run them in public for fear of getting banned from their hosting provider or DNS registrar, but still low risk in absolute terms.
