I have zero problem with the fail-fast, fail-earlier strategy and attitude. ultimately it's business. there is no point to continue if it's obviously not going to work. there is a catch though: do fail because of innovation (crazy, big ideas). I'd argue all these experiments, except gmail/map/wave, have 0 substance. most of them are crappy implemented, poor planed cat projects.

Unlike Microsoft, who had the will and executive ability to expand to new territories and destroy competitors, Google has a remarkable record of half-baked works and giving up. it's a joke.

I don't think the fruit company will approve apps programmed other than objc or swift.

I totally agree with the article except one thing: it's much much more a pleasant experience to code iOS app than Android, even without considering the fragmentation problem.

Luckily Peter Bright does not quit covering MS/web/programming yet.

looks good, only 7 years late to the game.

it's a dumb only because it failed. will you do it again if the conversion/reply rate was good?

If I were you, i'll probably setup a competition project repo, invite folks to contribute, only do the sales pitch after they are hooked.

who was the last business leader in tech sector close to politics? john scully?

Well done! I hope Google would do the same when related to NSA and other 3 letters agencies.

when was the last time Google made headline of hn for its technology?

absolutely! In general I trust pure commercial organisations more than govt. and non-profit orgs.

according to my understanding, there is no "fact" in science. there are observations, hypotheses (and null hypotheses if related to stats) and theories. i think "fact" is used in the article as theories or hypotheses that explain corresponding observations well enough, and over and over again.

which comes first, a good consumer product or a healthy ecosystem around it? it's a positive feedback loop thing in later stage but product always comes first. it's not a big secret but only few nailed it occasionally in a decade.

Were Steve Jobs, John Ive, Tim Cook and other Apple guys crystal clear about the theory when they started iPod/iPhone? I don't think so. Apple has a unique weapon called design and is willing to pay whatever it costs to enhance it. Its business is to use the weapon wherever there is a chance: mp3 player, tivo, mobile phone, watch and more to come. The rest is upon professors in business schools to figure out.

the behaviour of an individual does affect his creditability though.

why this quote got down voted? it's exactly how Opensource progresses.

> ... and trains have needed to be rebooted.

Since when that default solution to any problem of any device embedded with CPU, is to reboot?

Welcome to the digital age!

I think Liu is more inline with Isaac Asimov than Arthur Clarke. Liu is clearly an atheist and intentionally avoid cheap reading gratification achieved by science-religion association.

My complaint about Liu: he has a silly admiration towards Stephen Hawking probably due to his obsession with black hole. (but who doesn't?) 200 years later, people might only get to know Stephen Hawking when reading Liu's books.

I stopped reading Ni Kuang's work since 14. I'd consider comparing Ni Kuang with Liu a serious offence to Liu's readers.

In my opinion, the second and third instalments of The Three Body Problem are as good as the Foundation series. The first one, really is just a trailer.

The second one, entitled The Dark Forest is far more than Sci-fi. Personally, I interpret it as a serious international political question: could the West really tolerate any other forms of civilisation? the book gave a negative perspective.

Claim: I live in UK and I understand most of EU folks don't like to be simplified as Westerners. However, from a Chinese perspective, the cultural differences between FR/DE/UK/CA/US/AU are invisible.

"This is something that I’ve [p]raised directly with President Xi," Obama said.

I'm no fan of either Obama or W, but I do think your comment is unfair. The truth is, given the peak status US enjoyed, there is no foreign policy would bring meaningful and tangible benefit to people of USA. It's a typical diminishing marginal utility situation.

One question: when can we have a real look at react-native ?

emacs doesn't have decent support of jsx: the jsx-mode is actually for another tech with same name, the js2-mode is great except xml support.

i love vim a lot (use evil in emacs), except vimscript. I hope oneday I could use neovim with atom/st2 as frontend.

amazing! more than 6 months of hard work to strip out 140 pages of info. My 5 years old son could do the job faster.

Value and price are different things in lots of economic theories, e.g. Maxisim

The view that developers are just coders to implement business requirements shall simply follow instructions/specifications is dangerous. The attitude of "my way or highway" is absurd if you really understand how organization/team works. It's your job, as a project manager, to not only provide material supports for your engineers to do their work, but also translate business logic into clear, acceptable, feasible and inspirational vision to your dev team. Engineers, on average, are smart and reasonable people. It's your personal failure being unable to convince engineers on "why" questions (e.g. why support IE8 on XP).

btw, 90% of business fail. it means 90%+ of the so called "business requirements" are just bs. it doesn't hurt to explain your business to your engineers. Can you sell your ideas to team? if you can't, it's a bigger problem than couple of naughty engineers.

Edit: delete the last line considered offensive.

"Collaboration" means nothing in the business world. How many serious partners did Apple have when developing Copland, Taligent?

I bet it's going to be linked to NSA, GCHQ and IDF in tomorrow's news paper.

Lenovo customers pay $$, man. Lenovo is either incompetent or evil. you pick.

The last time I heard from GNOME was about javascript binding. I think the choosing of programming language in this age is more to do with marketing. Piggyback is the right way.
