crgt··on Show HN: A GitHub contribution for my newborn's feedings, turned into SaaS
I love this. Also curious how other parents that code who have older kids are using new tools to help navigate their family thru different phases. Personalized software opens up infinite possibilities so it’s interesting to hear what’s working for people.
crgt··on Ask HN: For a job in tech, are you only interested in remote only jobs?
Am at a fully remote position after years commuting from the East Bay to SF. Don’t miss BART, don’t miss the commute to the office, and won’t go back. I am remote only from this point forward. It works well for our team and if I decided to switch roles I would absolutely prioritize orgs that have figured out how to be effective remotely. It is absolutely possible and honestly feels like a useful filter when assessing how adaptive an org is to changing circumstances. Clinging to an in office approach feels distinctly horse n carriage to me at this point.
crgt··on Damus to be removed from App Store as zaps could be used to sell digital content
Zaps are not payments to Damus devs. Zaps are purely P2P and non-transactional. This does seem new? When even @jack is surprised by it? Not his first rodeo, right?
crgt··on Apple announces ‘upgrade’ to App Store pricing, adding 700 new price points
Support for pricing tiers above 1k for one big thing.
crgt··on Current guidelines for sun exposure are unhealthy and unscientific – research (2019)
I tried this approach. I love being outside, love the beach, love to run and when I was younger I loved having a nice bronze tan.

I am now a stage 4 melanoma patient. They have taken my lymph nodes on one side, a chunk of my brain, and half of my right lung. Immunotherapy has so far saved my life, but there are no guarantees this will last.

Careful. I sincerely hope it plays out better for you..

crgt··on Forget personalisation, it’s impossible and it doesn’t work
Anecdotally, I love the personalized station Apple Music generates for me. I have pretty eclectic, cross-genre taste and the quality of the personalized station - the mix of stuff I already love and the new stuff that I don't know yet but that I end up loving - is by far the stickiest part of the service for me. It also seems to be improving over time? I know, anecdotal, but that has been my experience..
crgt··on Dark Patterns That Mislead Consumers Are All over the Internet
Have recently been scammed by a couple of these, and was pretty sure I knew better. Curious if this community has any suggested recourse for this kind of stuff? Especially after the fact, when you realized you've been scammed?
crgt··on iMessage for Windows: A labor of love that will never see light of day (2018)
Wow. There’s been a lot going on lately?
crgt··on Reasons not to become famous
- Mindy Kaling (Vera Chokalingham)
crgt··on Apple delivers a new redesigned Maps for users in the United States
By raising the quality bar of what is expected?
crgt··on The Yang Gang and Its Bots
Rick Deckard feels your pain. Kinda makes you wonder about the usefulness of the Turing Test too, if humans can’t pass it anymore..
crgt··on People Who Are Obsessed with Success and Prestige
Scholarships are a thing?
crgt··on FaceTime bug lets you hear audio of person you are calling before they pick up
Anyone try FaceTiming his email? Could be linked to iCloud and FaceTime-able..
crgt··on Robinhood launches 3% checking account
Many Lehman clients got pennies on the dollar..
crgt··on Americans are changing their relationship with Facebook
iMessage is my goto method for sharing kids pics these days. It’s on purpose to the people I know care and who I trust. Also private so no endless public record. And there are archived backups in the cloud. Perhaps some of my extended circle misses out this way? But it mostly seems to work.
crgt··on Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during wildfire
I’d recommend a combo of teaching English and freelance remote dev. Definitely possible to make it work..
crgt··on Scientists In Alaska Find Mammoth Amounts Of Carbon In The Warming Permafrost
We have wild turkeys near us. My chocolate lab went a couple rounds with a mother turkey this spring. First couple of encounters went to the mama turkey as she was defending her babies and my dog was just terrified of her. She would spread her wings (6-8 feet wide or so?) and then hover above him. He would freak out and back away, terrified. Eventually the dog got brave, chased her off and ate a couple of turkey babies. But based on that interaction, I definitely would NOT bet on a lab taking down a velociraptor. The raptor would have gone for the kill when the dog was still scared..
crgt··on Show HN: iOS Ref – a quick reference site for iOS developers
This is great, appreciate having all of this in one place. Handy reference.
crgt··on I drove the Tesla Model 3 and it's not 'mainstream'
Huh. I personally LOVE using my iPhone as a remote for our Apple TV. Also the way it’s implemented there’s no need to look at your phone at all - the phone is just a giant touchpad that gives you full control of the TV interface..
crgt··on Stanford CS007: Personal Finance For Engineers
hahahahha. It’s a strange world when 300k+ of current purchasing power is not considered a decent inheritance. What baseline are you using? I would have loved an inheritance like that..
crgt··on Why do we care more about benefit ‘scroungers’ than billions lost to the rich?
This sounds like Rawls’ veil of ignorance argument..
crgt··on Ask HN: We have a great team and capital but can't find a good idea
As a pedestrian walking in SF, I am almost run over in crosswalks daily, even while knowing that drivers will run right through them. Fix that and I’d subscribe to a companion app with a blank white screen for $5/month..
crgt··on iPhone 8
The real question is - who wants wireless charging? This is how they achieve that..
crgt··on iPhone 8
Courage! In all seriousness, if you were expecting a reintroduction of the headphone jack, you might as well wait for them to reintroduce floppy disks. Apple only looks forward. That's just how they roll.
crgt··on Few Cities Could Accommodate Amazon's New Headquarters
But some of us might move back if Amazon were there..
crgt··on How Seth Godin would launch a business on a $1,000 budget
I also have done this. When companies reach out via recruiters, it never hurts to ask for what you want. Worst case, it's an easy screen; best case, you get what you want..
crgt··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2017)
Hour-plus is one way...
crgt··on Repeating Radio Signals Coming from Distant Galaxy Detected
I think you missed the Trig Tablets article earlier this month..
crgt··on Launch HN: Plasticity (YC S17) – APIs for human-like natural language interfaces
Of course! I love these launch posts, they are one of my favorite parts of HN. One other question for you, sparked in part by your response - any plans on your roadmap to support any other (non-Western?) languages for any of the APIs? Chinese, perhaps?
crgt··on Launch HN: Plasticity (YC S17) – APIs for human-like natural language interfaces
This passage (from another one of the articles on top of HN right now (https://www.wired.com/2015/11/null#tpw)) generates an error when trying to use the Sapien demo: "As a technology journalist, being a Null has served me rather well. (John Dvorak, you know what I’m talking about!) The geek connotations provide a bit of instant nerd cred—to the point where more than one person has accused me of using a nom de plume to make me seem like a bigger nerd than I am.

But there’s a dark side to being a Null, and you coders out there are way ahead of me on this. For those of you unwise in the ways of programming, the problem is that “null” is one of those famously “reserved” text strings in many programming languages. Making matters worse is that software programs frequently use “null” specifically to ensure that a data field is not empty, so it’s often rejected as input in a web form."

Maybe it's the use of the word `Null`? Not sure, but love what you're doing and thought I'd let you know about this.
