cromka··on Apple reports fourth quarter results
i dont think thats what they menat. If Apple went full on with their series and movies content, winning awards left and right, rightfully so, then expectation here is they would release their own, exclusive game titles.
cromka··on BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter
The west? As far as I am concerned, EU moves towards EVs as well. Not as fast as China does, but it does. It's the US that doubles down on ICEs (pun intended).
cromka··on Oracle files to sell $20B in new stock, bonds to finance AI buildout
This is the equivalent of 2007 garbage CDSes.
cromka··on Memdoor: A team of 5 Qwen3.8-27B models beats Fable 5 on LiveCodeBench Hard
And the privacy.
cromka··on I'm a Proton employee and I'm breaking my silence
This is a niche in which I do t exactly think speed of development and new bling is particularly important.

Either thy drop encryption and just become Google Suite competitor, or they stick to the original differentiator. Looks like they want both and the customers for each are different targets.

cromka··on HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN
Thanks, much appreciated!
cromka··on HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN
I pay for YT premium but noticed the quality of recommendations is subpar yet I still end up wasting time watching it. So I decided I need to limit my feed to my subscribed videos only, which YT app makes annoyingly difficult.

How does HN handle this? I suppose downloading videos for consuming outside YT own app works, but what's the best solution for this, especially with Apple TV as a player?

cromka··on I'm a Proton employee and I'm breaking my silence
As someone commented:

> The only reason I'm with Proton is security. If I wanted new features, and AI in my email I'd just stay with Gmail. They objectively do it better.

Same here and I'm looking to move at the end of my subscription.

cromka··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
Of course there's a law for it!

Thanks!

cromka··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
Problem with legacy code is that with time some of the bugs have become features without users even knowing it or remembering it.
cromka··on Ask HN: Opus 5.5 suddenly dumb as rocks?
I have same experience with Fable, it's absolutely ridiculous. It's not one, it's like 10 transgressions an hour, doing really stupid stuff, hallucinating, ignoring commands, gold-fish memory.

They're nerfing them real hard.

cromka··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
I personally think we'd be better off without summer time but with more timezones in EU.
cromka··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
And yet you never responded to my "login to macOS as root without password" argument.

That's convenient!

cromka··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Did you notice how it's you who's reducing it to "What Jobs said" strawman to avoid addressing the actual arguments?
cromka··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Things aren't decided by customers only. There are journalists, YouTubers and whole class of influencers who can decided something is shite on a whim. If enough people do so, the tide may change faster then you'd think. It happened to companies with cult following before. It's literally happening to Nike as we speak.

Apple has had more flops than hits in recent years. The Vision Pro, the Glass interface, the Duo hinge flaw that will almost certainly end up with a recall. The Apple Watch always listening, now the bangle touch display with nothing innovative to back it up?

They don't deliver like they used to. I was their fanboy for 10 years and they did deliver the quality and innovation consistently, I just don't see it anymore. The only thing they have going is the CPU.

cromka··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Same position: I still very much appreciate this but seriously feel something is being lost here and the brand is slowly chipping away.
cromka··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
But there's a cost involved if you go against one of your most defended stances and offer nothing to back up that change of heart.

It's a negative on the brand because that sort of consistency is something that made Apple.

cromka··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Have you considered battery in them?
cromka··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
How would it be worse? Linux distros patched things almost immediately and you'd get a notification, typically after a daily check.

How is that worse than NOT having any sort of fix from Apple?

cromka··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I also assumed Apple had something up their sleeves that would make sense to everyone once shown.

Meanwhile they just added a touchscreen. No new hinge. No new UI. Not even a Pen support.

WTF are they doing?

cromka··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
But based on the Ad, they did not show own usage and it doesn't look like the hinge is 180. If that's correct, Apple went absolutely against its own beliefs for UX/UI.
cromka··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
Eh? Changes systems without consent? Is that the ONLY way to update a fatal flaw in system? Normal update channels don't work?

Besides, how does this relate to my Linux point, where no one installs anything without you knowing it?

cromka··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
Not really, no. HTTPS was used, except for log-in only. But cookies traveled unencrypted, so you had access to the account anyhow.

And not just GMail, this was virtually every service out there. From a perspective, it's laughable how bad security was back then.

cromka··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
> Well that "screw up" was so egregious that it should take at least a decade to regain any trust.

Do you use macOS? Because if you did, then how did you recover from them allowing anyone to straight-up log in as root without password? And then mess up the fix for that bug? That wasn't 2008, that was 8 years ago.

cromka··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
Things like this is why I moved back to Linux after 10 years on macOS.
cromka··on Discovering and exploiting vulnerabilities in real-world software with Claude
With this many exploits and, presumably, actors having access to their own, unpublished 0-days, doesn't it make sense to at least run the browser in isolated environment nowadays? I insist on installing everything from the package repository, but Flatpak/sandboxing may make more sense for a browser that is the biggest attack surface on a day-to-day device.
cromka··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
I think they refer to low-tier Wildcat which, indeed, is more efficient than Apple's CPU in Neo, which they typically get compared against.
cromka··on Ghostty 1.4
Kitty can do that now, though.
cromka··on Ghostty 1.4
"My Ford used too much fuel on one of the trips, so I switched to Volkswagen and today, on a another trip, it used much less."
cromka··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
"A Huge Upgrade". They literally just changed the CPU? How is that a huge upgrade? What would they call an actual upgrade, the kind people expected?

So tired of their PR grandiose.
