You don't have physical access to the network, doesn't mean other actor aren't here. Working for providers, governments, or being able to impersonate them. This is a serious issue, it shouldn't be downplayed.

If you think it's not that important, it becomes a critic about TLS and basically saying that ciphers for web traffic are useless.

Depends on your side. Status quo is perceived as viscerally ugly to some.

Thing is the 80yo grandma may sit, alone, on a huge land. Meanwhile, young families are struggling to find a decent place.

Taxing/reducing the land can be perceived as unfair to grandma. Having young struggling more than previous generation and getting much smaller spaces can also be perceived as unfair.

Unless you are on embargo and don't want to give more details to attackers. Seeing specific requests being blocked is very valuable information about upcoming vulnerabilities.

If you own a website and see what kind of requests are denied by your Edge/Cloud provider, you can easily gather details and deduce which tools and specific features are broken.

With deontology, you prepare the rules and wait for the embargo to be lifted and don't overdo it on fear marketing. Of course if things are getting sideway and people starts leaking details, that's another story.

cryptonym··on Today's PHP security release, and how we're strengthening security
I think multiple companies didn't respect the embargo, in different ways.

That can be for marketing purposes or by mistake. Not sure how to deal with that.

Agree.

Overall the system is organized to be slow and drain money from you. This is how lawyers, experts and others can put food on the table.

If ceramic industrialization relies massively on ceramic artist designs used with no authorization nor retribution, it may have been morally similar.

I don't know the details of ceramic industrialization.

True. they were fine providing advances to their field for others to learn and build from that shared legacy. They didn't agree for their work to be the base of auto-slopping at industrial scale. Quite easy to understand, except for AI-bros.

LLM is not a person but T&C probably states that a human moderator may view any of it. Her lawyer could probably argue a moderator filtering usage isn't the intent of the law, it was more about publishing / sending message for other humans and it was never clear to her that a human was reviewing her private diary. Shouldn't LLM disclose that at some point when people are feeding really personal stuff?

cryptonym··on Uproar in France over award-winning author accused of using AI
It got banned from Goncourt. Looks like not disclosing AI-use didn't met expectations.

You are free to read and like it, but you do not get to dictate what other people should or should not expect. Artificial ghostwriter is not really Goncourt-ish.

cryptonym··on Uproar in France over award-winning author accused of using AI
Like it or not, people expect significant AI-use to be disclosed. When only human is credited, they feel cheated.

Excellent use of AI? Disclose it and avoid the fuss.

> You sit on chairs everyday where you don't give a shit how they were created.

I am dumb on chair making, as the average chair user. I wouldn't trust myself building a commercial-grade chair.

If you are as dumb with software as I am with chair making, you should refrain from building software for others. This is regardless of LLM.

By this logic removing CSAM also is censorship. This definition of censorship is valid but it doesn't convey much moral value. Removing some content, even without a trial, can be a good thing.
cryptonym··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Blocking illegal football streaming is not censorship.
cryptonym··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
There is no ethical way to watch football. It's always funding a (or multiple) mafia-like organization.

Authorities tried to work with that provider but it required a process that doesn't scale to live events. They do not want to preemptively disallow abuses on their platform. If you leverage their shared IPs to expose your service, your traffic cannot be distinguished from abuses by traffic filtering solutions. I think they provide BYOIP, if you think your service is important enough to justify not being mixed with non-legit things. Or you can rework your architecture, this provider is not the full web.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like it and would vote against IP-filtering if I was asked that specific question. I don't consider it tyrannical. Criteria for blocking IPs is clear and limited, even if blocking IPs is dumb. VPN are allowed.

cryptonym··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
> tyranny

Previous comment was about people trying to watch football paying a few euros to shady business, who knows where that money lands, rather than the official offer from people who spent a lot to get the rights to broadcast.

I really don't like the implementation but I wouldn't call that tyranny. Blocking archive is much more concerning.
