The sky above the port was the color of television without an input signal. The message 'Check cable' kept flashing, despite my most desperate efforts to configure the display settings. The audience was getting restless. "Who is that guy?"

cstuder··on Programmers and software developers lost the plot on naming their tools
I still think ICQ was the greatest application name ever.
cstuder··on WordPress plugin quirk resulted in UK Gov OBR Budget leak [pdf]
> A feature known as the Download Monitor plug-in created a webpage with the clear URL which provided a link to the live version, which bypassed the need for authentication. This rendered the protections on the ‘future’ function of WordPress redundant as it bypassed the required authentication needed to gain access to the pre-uploaded document.

WordPress is a nice piece of software, but the plugin situation is getting worse and worse. (Too many pending updates, premium features and constant upselling, selling of plugins to new sketchy owners...)

cstuder··on Server DRAM prices surge 50% as AI-induced memory shortage hits hyperscalers
It feels like we're actually living in the Universal Paperclips universe.
cstuder··on Building an IoT Notification Device from Scratch
FYI: A couple of the images down in the article are not loading (And later some seem to be incorrectly formatted). I'm especially looking forward to the exploded button.
cstuder··on Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music
If you want more than samples, he's compiled a lot of 1-2 hour genre specific mixes here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Ishkur/

cstuder··on UK unis to cough up to £10M on Java to keep Oracle off their backs
Yes, the previous company I worked at redirected the Oracle download pages to a custom page explaining the problem and offering alternatives. That was nice.
cstuder··on In the 1980s we downloaded games from the radio
The german C64 magazine "64er" had an application which allowed "easy" entry of assembly applications by means of a hex encoding and used a checksum on each line to prevent bugs from typos. Still an incredible chore.
cstuder··on Ask HN: Where do you browse and chat outside of here?
Private Slack, WhatsApp and Signal groups are the most valuable to me.
cstuder··on Ask HN: Which RSS reader do you use?
I'm still running a self-hosted Fever instance, it still didn't break down with newer PHP versions.

Using Reeder Classic as an RSS client. Also something threatened by unwanted updates.

cstuder··on David Lynch has died
My best Mullholland Drive experience: A couple of years ago a local arthouse cinema showed the movie again. It was brilliant, just like I remembered it.

After the showing, the projectionist came into the room and apologized for the confusing movie: "I must have mixed up the reels..."

She didn't.

cstuder··on Wait Until 8th
For non-americans: Apparently this corresponds to 13-14 years old.
cstuder··on Omnivore Is Joining ElevenLabs
I came from Instapaper after their price hike to Omnivore and went back to Instapaper. I felt that Omnivore was over-complicated with their "every folder is a filter" structure. Instapaper feels much more straightforward.
cstuder··on BorgBackup 2.0 supports Rclone – over 70 cloud providers in addition to SSH
If you're looking for cheap online storage for your backups know this: A Microsoft 365 Single subscription comes with 1 TB of OneDrive space (Family subscriptions with 1 TB per person).

I've been using it with restic + rclone successfully for years. It's not very fast, but works.

cstuder··on Show HN: Konty – A Balsamiq-alternative lo-fi wireframe tool for modern apps
The desktop version of Balsamiq with a one-time-payment is still available, but you have to hunt for it a little.
cstuder··on Kagi Assistant
Thanks for the hint, a usage based model looks way more attractive to me right now.
cstuder··on Kagi Assistant
So for 25$ a month I get access to ChatGPT and Claude offerings in addition to access to Kagi search. This sounds like a good deal, compared to the 20$/month access to ChatGPT only. Or am I missing something?
cstuder··on Investigating corrupt Winamp skins
A notorious issue when doing Windows support (An experience I recommend to every developer!): Double clicking a folder or file in Explorer in order to open it, but slipping the mouse and therefore accidently moving the target into another folder.
cstuder··on Ask HN: Do you also marvel at the complexity of everyday objects?
I've recently acquired a 3D printer and have been teaching myself 3D modeling with a CAD tool.

It made me appreciate that every. single. line. on man made objects was a conscious decision of a person. Even if the tooling or physical constraints influenced the decision, somebody had to place it there.

cstuder··on Portal (2021)

cstuder··on Abandoned and little-known airfields
I randomly clicked on `Wyoming` and halfway down the page came across a picture of Amelia Earhart. That was a fun surprise.
cstuder··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://hymnos.existenz.ch

(German.)

Technical and personal stuff mixed up together, running since 2005 on Blogger first, then Movable Type and now Wordpress. Always nice to run down nostalgia lane on my personal life.

cstuder··on Hetzner Introduces ARM64 Cloud Servers
Any recommendations for an uncomplicated server OS which will just run Docker, SSH and not much more?

I'm currently running Ubuntu but am open to alternatives. My local Raspberry Pi uses a fun, but little maintained OS called Hypriot which is just this: Start Docker and not much more.

cstuder··on Grid World

Scroll all the way down for a lovely surprise.

cstuder··on Ask HN: Can any Hetzner user please explain your workflow on Hetzner?
For my hobby server:

  - Running dokku with Heroku Buildpacks to deploy both from source and to run Docker images behind an ngnix reverse proxy.
  - Autoupgrade apt's, manually updating the OS.
  - No load balancing.
  - No scaling.
  - Automated backups with restic/rclone to OneDrive.
  - Hetzner firewall, no DDoS protection.
cstuder··on Gattaca is still pertinent 25 years later
And for the love of god, watch the directors cut of `Dark City`, not the cinema version.
