ctpide··on Apple broke up with me
Commonly the 1 unhappy customer might tell his story to ten of their friends or thousands+ of readers online. Fixing customer problems (especially drastic ones) carries large incentives, because those single stories will actually be observed, while the 1000 happy customers won‘t be mentioned.
ctpide··on Judge orders Apple to allow external payment options for App Store
I would assume that a large chuck of the revenue is generated by few highly successful developers, for which they continue to charge 30%

ctpide··on Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon
Does this actually mean that LittleSnitch could continue to function as is - with the same kernel extensions used until now?

> To allow installation of software that uses kernel extensions, select the “Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers” checkbox.

ctpide··on Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon
Would LittleSnitch now not technically be able to continue using the kernel extensions it relied upon?

> To allow installation of software that uses kernel extensions, select the “Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers” checkbox.

ctpide··on Ask HN: What are some alternatives to Google maps?
Mapbox if you are looking to integrate something into your website / app
ctpide··on Ask HN: What are some alternatives to Google maps?
This is still my primary reason to use GMaps - I wish they would prioritize Public Transport in Apple Maps - SBB even provides an API they could easily use to get any schedule they need as far as i know.
ctpide··on An open source GitHub-like platform as an alternative for AWS Lambda
Good point about the billing. In our case FAAS is not offered by the cloud provider (yet), but we are stuck with them. They want us to spin up a server for every service. We started doing micro-services, but it’s just so much overhead compared to serverless. I rather deploy something like this, even without 1-1 mapping in regards to billing.
ctpide··on Ask HN: Flexible, lightweight build automation/CI tool?
I’ve been using Concourse CI and it’s fairly light weight and has great declarative pipelines. Learning curve is not too steep and it has a command-line tool to update your pipelines. Maybe it’s a stupid suggestion, but you could connect the worker in that setup through ssh to a Mac for building, but of course that takes away some of the comfort, but you will have to run a dedicated build machine anyway.

Also, doesn’t Travis CI have macOS support ?

ctpide··on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Aren't Fully Disabled When Off in iOS 11 Control Center
When you enable airplane mode, you can actually see WiFi and Bluetooth crossed out as opposed to grayed out. So there is a difference in UI, but I agree - this is not intuitive to the user.
ctpide··on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Aren't Fully Disabled When Off in iOS 11 Control Center
Are we sure about this - you can enable Bluetooth and WiFi in Airplane mode - will this still work as before now?
ctpide··on Why I don't believe in Uber's Success
Yes, but it's also not uncommon that cab drivers use their knowledge of the local streets in their advantage, which is a lot less likely when your average Uber driver relies on GPS navigation.

I particularly remember taking a cab in Las Vegas many years ago trying to get from one end of the strip to the other. I was an obvious tourist - so he took the "faster router" around the city - just to "realise" that the exit he was going to take was blocked due to construction work and he now had to do a huge detour.

ctpide··on Why I don't believe in Uber's Success
I would say the "better experience" argument is mostly true when you look at how payments are handled, but a taxi will pick you up and drop you off very much the same way as Uber does. A lot of cab companies have now implemented their own apps - so you can get a similar request-on-demand situation, only that you'll not be charged extra when demand goes up...

In the last city I lived pretty much all cab drivers were also Uber (black) drivers (or maybe it was the other way around). Regardless, pricing was very similar and often cheaper going with the regulated taxi rate.

ctpide··on Everyday things on the web the EU Commission wants to make illegal
That should only apply in the US, though. How would a publisher in - let's say Sweden - care about DMCA?
ctpide··on Show HN: Send a Custom Postcard to Anywhere, from Your Phone, for $2.99
I tend to kindly disagree - while what you say is true for the people who love to write and receive postcards - this service is perfect for lazy people like me. The real postcard lovers will still want to buy the real thing and hand-write the message on there and probably wouldn't consider this kind of service either way.
ctpide··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
In my experience merchants in Australia often add the fee directly at checkout. You can't really pass on the costs any more direct than that. They often do provide PayPal for checkout, which is why I expect people use it. Stripe is simply not present, so how could we use it?
ctpide··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
Apple Pay is technically trying to solve this problem by providing one-time authentication keys for a specific transaction at time of payment. This sort of key can not be reused in another transaction... What exactly do you mean with other passwordless ways?
ctpide··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
So, technically, everyone who does this (provides their login info) violates their terms with the bank I assume, as they probably told you not to share your password with any third party?
ctpide··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
Yes, because that never got stolen in the past
ctpide··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
Many banks now actually provide code generators, but yes in the past you would receive new codes every so often.
ctpide··on PayPal? No way
Seems this is a very one sided view from the sellers perspective. I believe most people want to use PayPal to be more secure. I've paid plenty of bills through simple wire transfers, but those were large reputable utility companies or merchants I trust. Small websites which are completely unknown to me, don't deserve the trust to wire money to, immediately, sorry, but I rather not have to hire a lawyer to get my money back in case something screws up. That's what PayPal and CreditCards are for.
ctpide··on PayPal? No way
To be fair - the main reference was inside the EU. And fees for international transfers inside the EU have been subject to regulations are are now generally close to zero. Different story for outside EU, though - absolutely agree!
ctpide··on Linux can’t be installed on a recent Lenovo laptop
I believe you don't need to be able to read/write to the hard drive when boot a linux installer (aka live CD).
ctpide··on Windows Hello face recognition is vulnerable to the Jedi mind trick
Jedi: "These are not the faces you are looking for." Windows: "Are you sure? [Yes] [No] [Cancel]"
ctpide··on Reports of cancellation of AdSense accounts
Have to agree - there is no indication (apart from one person speculating about it) that this had anything to do with hacking Google AdSense.
ctpide··on Reports of cancellation of AdSense accounts
It's not that they can't - it's probably more that they don't want to and think they shouldn't. Show me one Google Service that actually offers decent support (apart form their more recent adventures as Google Fibre ISP).

ctpide··on Two-factor authentication for Apple ID
Happened with very old accounts to me as well, where no security questions even had to be entered at the time. The solution was to call Apple Support - they could do it over the phone - I think I had to verify some account details like street address, etc.
