d-sc··on If you can use open source, you can build hardware
Eh. As a counter point.

I live in Montana, have a degree in an unrelated field but still work on IOT projects.

I work mostly from home or private office and have never needed to drive for course of work.

Not sure how you exist in Montana without driving.

If you’d like to move into that field, it’s certainly not easy but it is possible.

d-sc··on Case Studies in USB-C Debugging (2020)
Yup - also you need to know both fields hence why it pays more.
d-sc··on Free stuff makes us irrational
I gave away some broken tools on Craigslist once and had a similar experience. 2 people showed up really happy, one was entitled. Didn’t really scare me off though.
d-sc··on Terraform Provider for Spotify
1) that was fun. The explanations next to each parameter are helpful to know what each slider modifies.

2) the way you advertise your app and ask for feedback is welcoming. It feels honest.

d-sc··on Leading someone with more years of experience than my age
Leadership is about getting people from point a to point b. Generally to do that you need trust, a good idea of where point a,b are, and what the path between them looks like.

Age is a component of trust, but only a small one and very dependent on the situation.

If you want to be leading someone who has more experience than you, best be sure you have trust and a rock solid understanding of the path you need to be on.

d-sc··on Power-cycling a USB port should be simple, right? (2017)
Thanks!

I’me working on an embedded project and would like to setup a CI/CD pipeline. Do you have any recommended resources?
d-sc··on The Best and Worst Microcontroller SDKs
Can personally voice for the Nordic series chips. Their Sdk has allowed for some of the most pleasant coding I have ever done.
d-sc··on American Airlines Is Quietly Bringing Back the 737Max
Amen. If we don’t focus on the root cause it will be harder to solve the problem. And understand that we have actually solved it.

d-sc··on Show HN: I reverse engineered my cable modem and turned it into an SDR
Wait what? Uart is active low. So it’s not to hard to bump the 12V down to 5V, but what happened with the -12V?
d-sc··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
At least in the states. Most airlines I fly have an option for a premium seat that costs more and has more leg room.
d-sc··on Bleeding-edge tech will kill your startup
I have $300+ in Apple mouse and trackpads connected to my computer but I still find myself using the $30 dell mouse that I got as a backup.
d-sc··on The End of Spectrum Scarcity (2004)
If there is more capacity available, people will use it.

For instance, I happily stream videos and FaceTime over cellular quite a bit now. Even though I was plenty happy without that capability and don’t really mind when the cell service isn’t good enough for it to work.

d-sc··on Tesla on Autopilot collides with police vehicle in Arizona
Non autopilot cars crash into parked police vehicles too. It’s common enough that officers are trained a prepared for such an event.

Is this maybe a reflection on the inherent safety risk of parking on the side of the road?

d-sc··on Playstation's secret weapon: a nearly all-automated factory
The robots are accurate, but the cables are not. Pick and place robots deal with uniformly sized parts that come in nice reels.

Cables and tape are not as uniform and have a tendency to move in random directions.

d-sc··on The Idea of Entropy Has Led Us Astray
Entropy is only kinda about probability.

>How can we talk about the uncertainty of a system that is in a single, well known, predictable state.

The system we are usually talking about is orders of magnitude larger than the uncertainty. Think a liter of gasoline in an engine vs the position of a single atom. While we might not know the trajectory of the atom, we have a pretty good idea how the collective atoms that make up the gasoline will function.

d-sc··on The coronavirus pandemic isn’t ending – it’s surging
Yeah, I flew between 4 different states last week. Montana, Washington, California & Minnesota. Definitely very regional, even between Orange County and LA for instance.

Some places are full sit down at the bar is acceptable (no masks) vs. getting kicked out of a take-out joint for not wearing a mask (Los Angles).

d-sc··on Protests become fertile ground for online disinformation
Yeah.. and most people understand why nuclear weapons are dangerous. Meanwhile the internet silently takes over our attention span and values.
d-sc··on Coronavirus will end the golden age for college towns
Well, it’s hard to find capable people for grad school. It’s not just a selection to pick some form of the best. To succeed as a grad school you need people that can make discoveries and play the academic game.
d-sc··on Ask HN: Is your company sticking to on-premise servers? Why?
Hey, I’m in Bozeman too. We should get lunch sometime.
d-sc··on Apple engineer in need of OSS maintainers
You’re on the right track. Find a different job where they respect your projects and move on. You don’t really have much leverage right now as your current place doesn’t have much inventive to change their policy and doesn’t seem to respect your requests.
d-sc··on Children as young as 9 locked up by Indian Police for speech violation
Hate speech can have harmful physiological effects on those it targets.
d-sc··on Ending the Era of the U.S. Survey Foot
2 * 4 = 8 so the last significant digit should be an ‘8’
d-sc··on Photo of a suspended, glowing single atom wins photography prize
Advanced microscopes can distinguish individual atoms. This is relatively trivial if you have the correct setup. Search atomic force microscope and HOPG (highly ordered pyrolytic graphene).

This wasn’t the correct setup though to do that. Presumably the reason you can see a single atom is because there is only one present, ie if there was a second one next to it you wouldn’t necessarily be able to see the difference in the photograph.

d-sc··on Things I learned when I worked at LAX
Global entry included pre check.
d-sc··on SpaceX's Starship Mk1 just blew off its bulkhead in a pressurization accident
Typically the factor of safety is not that high in the aerospace industry.
d-sc··on Pixel 4 has a flaw that no software update can fix: It Bends
I sit on my phone all the time, take it in the shower, frequently drop it(on accident). So I guess the price of the phone doesn’t factor too much into how I physically treat it.

Regarding the back pocket, it’s just easier and a matter of personal preference.

d-sc··on The crisis in physics is not only about physics
I worked for a while on a team that designed an electron microscope from scratch. There was a phenomenal amount of work to take it from a bench top kluge that sometimes takes an image to a reliable product.

When designing sensitive instruments we had to use almost a paranoid attention to detail.

d-sc··on Perfectly Cropped
I have a brand new iPhone and the cable that is included with the phone connects directly to my 2019 MacBook Pro.
d-sc··on Man sues AT&T over 'SIM Swap' hack allegedly involving employees
There is support cost for disabling sms. While you may be technically inclined to be comfortable with disabling sms, they have to balance the cost of hacking vs support cost for all users.
