dagelf··on Should capitalism be a choice?
For anyone versed in history, the first two paragraphs are honestly difficult to read, because of the ingnorance displayed. If you do not get the types of critical responses you're hoping for, thats why.

I've got to run, but for now: you are asking for someone else practically invisible to you, to negotiate/compete on your behalf. The "enclosure" you are talking about is exactly this. It's literally a mindset, and when you are in it you do not realize what it really is. The automation dividend will make it possible for the first time, for somone to create abundance for people they don't care about. And people will. But even today, doing this effectively is really really hard. Technology makes pies bigger, but most pies we eat from are still very limited. Who gets to decide? You should go live in rural frugality in an agrarian society, it will peel the shells from your eyes. You may find that how things work are in reality diametrically opposed to his you thought.

dagelf··on IrDA
You can probably implement or use it with $1 worth of components connected to any modern SBC. It's a solution... what's the problem? Start there!
dagelf··on The political effects of X's feed algorithm
I didn't get it either until I trained the algorithm to feed me what I want by just clicking the three dots and selecting Not Interested on anything I never wanted to see again... it listens, whats left is really unmatched anywhere, I've really looked, and occasionally still do out of curiosity.
dagelf··on The political effects of X's feed algorithm
Train it: I just have to spend 3 minutes every other year to tap the 3 dots on every post and choose "Not Interested", for an epic feed unmatched anywhere.
dagelf··on The political effects of X's feed algorithm
Theres much more diversity of thought on the right, did they get more open minded?
dagelf··on Show HN: Kan.bn – An open-source alterative to Trello
It takes forever to compile, the locally hosted solution links to the online one at https://kan.bn and you've got to spend half a day to figure out how to truly self host
dagelf··on Suno v4.5
It's almost week-end! But I'm pretty sure these were shared merely as historical anecdotes, and that Suno 4.5 is the bleeding edge here...

Do elaborate...
dagelf··on Show HN: Search and analyze millions of SEC filings with AI.
Chat with "millions" of filings. As long as you select them one at a time.
dagelf··on Show HN: Search and analyze millions of SEC filings with AI.
Bad UX... "chat with thousands of filings" but right after: pick a ticker to start. Sure, click the Chat tab instead. Type a query. Roadblock: you have to log in first. After login, boom query wiped. I'm sure people won't use it for the UX, but UX matters...

Same budget line item?
dagelf··on A Letter to the American People
Except that the debt levels are unsustainable, mostly because of lack of competition, probably...
dagelf··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert, along with other games
For real, CnC Generals was the game that has taught me the most about the frivolity of war: there are no winners, both sides lose, it's just a grand burning of resources... for nothing.

You build a wonderful base and war machine, only to watch it burn.

If this was "required playing" to all kids, I would be greatly surprised if war would still be a thing... it basically mocks war. In the most fun way possible!

Look up Jeffrey Sachs' address to EU Parliament, if you are unsure about the real geopolitics of this century... you won't find it in US media.

dagelf··on Visual programming is stuck on the form
An essay on why visual programming is way too tainted by text... ironically, in 5000 words.

Good points made, but some missed: the visual cortex is easy to overload. Maybe its our whole desktop environment and window paradigm that needs an overhaul. Or maybe text isn't that bad.

But the point is made. I think the real problem is that the kind of people have have, up to now, been able to create software, have been stuck in a certain mindset. That seems to have changed, so, watch this space, I guess?

Maybe a hint for a new form is in the recursive nature of software: Code and data mimic CPU and RAM, instruction and parameter, and compute cluster and storage cluster... I made a very unconventional IDE that played with this, that made sense to me, in DOS. Maybe its time to revisit it...

dagelf··on Indentation Style: Notable Styles
Amen on both. The rest is just noise. Brackets are still a disaster though... I do love the fact that you don't have to close HTML tags. Making out-dentation close all brackets in order would be great...
dagelf··on Ask HN: Are there any CLI only tools that are monetised
You could really mess with them by putting up a web frontend that takes payment plus commission.

So a trial run then?...
dagelf··on OpenAI O3-Mini
Don't underestimate how much the long tail means to the general public.
dagelf··on OpenAI O3-Mini
I think the innovation here is probably that its a much smaller and so cheaper model to run.
dagelf··on Note on the Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence
The cop out is perhaps the flawed conception that keeps one from looking: that archetypal plank.
dagelf··on Note on the Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence
If you thought it a conincidence that they didn't grow very big, you would be mistaken. Your conception of the Loving Metaphor of God might be flawed, in perpetuity, if you stay too prideful or cowardly to let go of your dogmatic conceptions.
dagelf··on Automating Git Bisect with Ephemeral Environments
TL;DR Lazy compute intensive way to find what non-commit change broke your tests... if your tests are any good.
dagelf··on The AI Fad Just Burned to the Waterline
Another know-it-all calling AI a bubble. Lets revisit this, not in 10 years, but in 5. Things the article misses: "Bubbles" happen for more reasons than hype. There are moats, just not in the obvious or same old places. Funny thing is, an LLM can probably write a better TL;DR, that captures it better, not to mention a more insightful article.
dagelf··on An analysis of DeepSeek's R1-Zero and R1
Well o3 scored 75% on AGI-1, R1 and o1 only 25%.... watch this space though....
dagelf··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
Injesting is sure the right take. What a circus!
dagelf··on Why Gnome 2 Continues to Win the Desktop Popularity Contest (2019)
Xfce is by far the most compatible and easiest to customize, not to mention light weight, both to mention also had decades of dev. And of just wanted a launcher they would've been happy with IceWM. People want stability, interoperability and effortless customizability, with good defaults. Esthetics, nice fonts and themes. Ice has those too, but not in a control panel as such, and rarely bundled.
