damagednoob··on Ruby core team takes ownership of RubyGems and Bundler
>Andre has previously maintained that he owns a trademark on Bundler and he will enforce it against Ruby Central.

Well,

1. He's not fighting Ruby Central anymore, he'd be fighting the Ruby core team.

2. He's going to have a tough time asserting copyright on a name he didn't come up with on a project which shipped v1 before he joined.

3. If he believes the trademark belongs to the community, the right thing to do would be to transfer it to Ruby Core then, right?

damagednoob··on Why I'm not rushing to take sides in the RubyGems fiasco
Seems like a few old scores are being settled during this drama. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people on the side of RubyGems are avoiding commenting in case any legal disputes play out.
damagednoob··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
To be consistent, then the same goes for Shopify.

Just to echo those sentiments, Mike Perham has appeared on a panel discussion recently with his 'competitors', including Solid Queue.

damagednoob··on A Library in New Zealand Replaces Dewey with System Rooted in Māori Tradition
I think the thrust of the point is that it's not 'traditional'.
damagednoob··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
One might suggest that you may not be the only target demographic of Amazon.
damagednoob··on What the hell is a target triple?
When developing a small program for my Synology NAS in Go, I'm sure I had to target a specific version of glibc.
damagednoob··on The Guardian flourishes without a paywall
Or The Guardian supporting the Confederacy[1].

damagednoob··on WordPress.org bans WP Engine
Should Automattic be compelled to subsidise their competitors?

damagednoob··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
> If nobody or barely anyone used Megaupload, he wouldn’t have been in as much trouble.

In a world where opportunity costs exist, as they do for law enforcement, this makes sense?

damagednoob··on Ten Years and Counting: My Affair with Microservices
Did I miss the justification for the switch to Java? That decision seemed to come out of the blue.
damagednoob··on Xz: A microcosm of the interactions in open source projects
Something I've observed as an English speaking immigrant is that in general, the US/UK is very forgiving when it comes to foreigners trying to speak English. Where certain types of phrasing and harsh words would not be tolerated with first language English speakers, the benefit of the doubt is given to 2nd/3rd language speakers because they

1. Might not have the vocabulary to express themselves correctly

2. Not understand the nuance and connotations that their word choices imply

I've seen my colleagues get frustrated in meetings while simulatenously having to assume good intent.

Choosing names like the bad actor(s) did gives them an advantage in this scenario.

damagednoob··on Don't Invent XML Languages (2006)
I think the reason that JSON won was that at least on the client-side, it was much easier to turn the response data into a Javascript object to interact with then XML.
damagednoob··on DeskHop – Fast Desktop Switching
I have a KVM switch[1] and it's double middle mouse click to switch outputs. Works well with Mac, Linux or Windows.

damagednoob··on How to unit test code that depends on time
None of the scenarios you listed above are unit tests, which I believe is what the OP and the post was referring to.
damagednoob··on Ruby 3.3's YJIT: Faster While Using Less Memory
From the blog post, it sounded like their benchmark relied heavily on a gem with a C extension (nokogiri). It's hard to imagine a performance improvement on code that YJIT has no control over.
damagednoob··on "Useless Ruby sugar": Argument forwarding
This type of problem seems to be the exact reason why Object Orientated programming was developed in the first place. Whenever I'm repetitively passing arguments from one method to another, I usually find an object hiding in plain sight.
damagednoob··on Jezebel to shut down after 16 years as parent company lays off staff
What I can't understand is that The Onion's YouTube channel[1] has 2.5 million subscribers and a billion views. You'd think they be able to do something with that amount of eyeballs.

damagednoob··on Cooperative C++ Evolution – Toward a TypeScript for C++
I can't think of anyone besides Anders Hejlsberg that has a better track record with programming language innovation. At least 3 different languages that have all been commercially successful.
damagednoob··on South Africa imported a power station's worth of solar panels(3.4GW) in 6 months
You're effectively describing the "Parable of the broken window". Solar panels and the systems to run them now represent a significant outlay by businesses and some private individuals. Other countries don't have these expenses so the net effect is that South Africa becomes relatively less competitive and less attractive for investment.
damagednoob··on Asyncio, twisted, tornado, gevent walk into a bar
> You have to understand that async programming is hard, and no matter how good the tooling is, it's going to make your code more difficult to manage. It has a high price.

Is it unfashionable to say that NodeJS got this right with > v7.6? It's always felt pretty straightforward to me but perhaps it just suits my mindset. It's only when I try to do this in other languages (e.g. Python or Ruby) that it starts to feel clunky.

damagednoob··on Important Coding Habits
I don't want to ban things like homeopathy and chiropractors but I have seen them attached to government hospitals in the UK. Chiropractic treatment should not be funded by the public.
damagednoob··on Cloud Backed SQLite
Not sure if it's a usable concept but it sounds similar to what someone else did[1]:

> ...I implemented a virtual file system that fetches chunks of the database with HTTP Range requests when SQLite tries to read from the filesystem...

damagednoob··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
> Bonus if you're in the EU/UK: in most countries in the EU this will even lead to tax breaks and higher before-tax hourly rates.

Having been a contractor in the UK for 5 years, I don't think this is true. Between VAT, Company and Dividend tax, the taxman (HMRC) always gets his share.

damagednoob··on JPMorgan Chase and Co tracks employees to dystopian extents
Absolutely and I feel exactly the same way. I have a base station for my Android phone and a KVM switch, both very cheap.

A double click of the middle mouse button and I can instantly switch between my work laptop and my phone. Interacting with my phone with a keyboard and mouse is surprisingly fast and easy.

damagednoob··on Faster CPython at PyCon, part one
From what I remember, PyPy has some fundamental issues with using libraries with C extensions.
damagednoob··on How is it even possible to cheat on a musical performance practical exam?
Not sure what you mean? I think that was still aimed at the students who, presumably if they were to become teachers one day, would expect their own students not to cheat.
damagednoob··on Top US CEO pay rose 7.7% last year, outpacing inflation, study finds
Surely, if you get to the position of running a multi-billion dollar company on some level you should know what you're doing? No one is taking a rookie kart racing driver and putting them straight into Formula 1.
damagednoob··on Top US CEO pay rose 7.7% last year, outpacing inflation, study finds
'Top CEO', not 'Average CEO'. How much does LeBron James make in salary/endorsements/etc vs the average NBA player or Ronaldo vs the average professional soccer player?
