dan_thinks··on Google will turn off search for schools that reject AI
From the article, Google AI is deeply integrated with Google Search. So the article is correct - turning off one turns off the other.

From a privacy perspective, having all of this off by default is sensible. But only offering a basic product like Search if you opt into AI (when search as a capability does not need AI to function) - is newsworthy.

dan_thinks··on Ask HN: Have you worked for companies that overestimate their scaling needs?
Yes. Gather data (including costs, actual usage, projected growth, and usage spikes), and write up a concrete proposal with well-thought-out alternatives (including keeping the status quo). Include engineering time when comparing costs.

Make it a discussion of tradeoffs, and go in willing to compromise and commit.

dan_thinks··on WTF Ubuntu?
Using Ubuntu as a base became popular partly for the hardware support, codecs, ease of installation. Typing this from Linux Mint, which offers both the default Ubuntu based edition, and LMDE (the Debian Edition).

Debian has caught up, but it's been a minute since I've installed it.
