dandy23··on I'm done making desktop applications (2009)
Phones have as robust file system browsers as desktop computers.

It's probably just that the users of phones are not that "robust" and organized to care where the files are.

dandy23··on I'm done making desktop applications (2009)
I partly agree with you, but File System Access API requires Chrome. Other browsers do not support it. And this API does not support checking for file changes on the file system, eg. To reload a changed file like desktop editors do.
dandy23··on Volcker's Announcement of Anti-Inflation Measures
Maybe model the past, but not predict the future.
dandy23··on Volcker's Announcement of Anti-Inflation Measures
The relationship between interest and inflation is probably not as simple as people and experts seem to think. It's non-linear, involves hysteresis and also time delays. It's probably not possible to model.
dandy23··on Wegovy could be covered for at least 3.6M people under new Medicare rules
Why is it we can spend 10k/year on our car, but not 10k/year on ourself. We have to ask our government/insurance to pay. Makes no sense.
dandy23··on Burn After Wearing
This is where waste to energy plants should be used. It is a shame the unusable clothes are not burnt directly at the source to create electricity and remote heating. Instead it is shipped to the other end of the world by boat and truck and then burnt in open nature for no good.
dandy23··on The man who killed Google Search?
I have not seen any ossues with results. I have found what I was looking for every time both around tech and general topics.
dandy23··on A Beginner's Guide to the ESP8266 (2017)
The RP2040 doesn't have a good low power sleep mode. It uses several hundred uA in sleep and dormant mode versus the ESP8266 which uses only 20uA in deep sleep.

This makes a huge difference for sensor systems etc. A pico/RP2040 cannot be powered by a battery for very long.

dandy23··on A Beginner's Guide to the ESP8266 (2017)
It uses a lot of power for embedded apps though. Not often you need all that performance either.
dandy23··on The man who killed Google Search?
Kagi is still a good search engine though. Hopefully they continue to improve that part too, even if they do AI stuff.
dandy23··on Debugging the Doctor Brain: Who's teaching doctors how to think?
I think OP is quite right that insurance drives tests and costs up because contrary to what we think it is good for the insurance companies if the doctor bill is high because then people buy more expensive insurances and thus higher revenue for the insurance company.

If the cost would be low there would be no need for an insurance.

dandy23··on Debugging the Doctor Brain: Who's teaching doctors how to think?
The biology doesn't change of course, but the procedures, drugs, medical devices, treatments and overall knowledge and best practices does.

An annual physical is such a small and simple subset of the total medical field so not sure why you bring it up.

dandy23··on Mercedes becomes the first automaker to sell autonomous cars in the U.S.
And that's a very annoying condition to drive under. So quite useful.
dandy23··on EU data shows PHEVs emit 350% more CO2 than tested values
Why do people buy them then?
dandy23··on Smoking cannabis is now legal in Germany
What is meant with "legal cannabis"? That the last step somehow is a licensed dealer selling? Or is is guaranteed the whole chain from farmer to point of sales is legal?
dandy23··on Smoking cannabis is now legal in Germany
Producers following the laws can not compete with illegal producers on price. So even if you make consumption legal, the illegal networks will remain and become even bigger as the market expands.
dandy23··on Ask HN: Who's getting their job applications rejected?
This is something I have been wondering about a lot. How can companies pay so much for engineers i Silicon Valley when you get the same level of engineers in Europe for 1/3 the price. And provable 1/6 of you look more to the east or asia.

Sure, there might be some kind of network knowledge going on in Silicon Valley, but now with work from home, that's pretty much fading away.

dandy23··on Car is spying on you, leading to higher insurance rates
Apply it to healthcare and rethink.

Not saying you are completely wrong, but I think there are other measures to stop bad driving.

The whole point of insurance is also the even out the tops and bottoms. If everyone paid their fair share cost for the insurance there would be no point with insurance. You could as well pay the damage yourself when it comes.

dandy23··on In Economics Do We Know What We're Doing? Nobel Prize winner grows disenchanted
The problem with economic models is that they remove almost all parameters except a few. But the removed parameters account for like 90% of the outcome.

That's the only way you can create models of something as complex as society. It's way more complex and chaotic than weather and still economists think they can predict months and years into the future.

dandy23··on Giant 'sand battery' holds a week's heat for a whole town
I cannot explain the physics, but a big rock that has basked in the sun is really warm for a long time after sunset. A bucket of water loses its temperature faster.

The higher density of rock probably plays a big role.

dandy23··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
Because MS is everywhere.
dandy23··on My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2022)
I used to track every project in its own text file. Every task and a description was in this file. It was great, but got a bit messy. So now I use EasyOrg [1] where I also track each project's todos in its own text file, but now with time scheduling, search by time, links to other tasks in the file etc.

dandy23··on Diseconomies of scale in fraud, spam, support, and moderation
You miss the parent's point. Uber might care about their customers, but they don't give a toss about other aspects such as fraud, the local labor rules or local laws etc. They try to dodge it as much as possible. And that is a problem if they are a near monopoly and market leader because they are the market.
dandy23··on How China Built BYD
But why expand if no one buys their cars? There are so many more players selling EVs now both from China and Europe. It's harder to sell when you have competition.
dandy23··on Universal Basic Income Has Been Tried over and over Again. It Works Every Time
That would mean around 2000 USD per person per year if taking the full US military budget and paying everyone.

But this is much better than subsidizing home ownership for the rich.

dandy23··on Young Americans' Wealth Grew 80% Since 2019, but There's a Catch
Why?
dandy23··on Oil firms forced to consider climate effects of new drilling, rules Norway court
Then we could avoid the worst sources such as tar sands, fracking, arctic deep sea etc.
dandy23··on Goodbye non-KISS appliances
A simple switch and a buzzer is all there is to it. Has existed for several decades.
dandy23··on Oil firms forced to consider climate effects of new drilling, rules Norway court
But the quantities needed for the rest of the applications are so much smaller.
dandy23··on Remote work morphs into elite status symbol for wealthy, college-educated
It goes both ways. Companies can hire remote workers from anywhere in the world. If there are not enough engineers willing to come in and use the expensive spectrum analyzers or working in a clean room or whatever then you have to pay them more.
