dannytatom··on Show HN: A simple way to send secrets between teammates
to clarify, i meant i don’t have the bandwidth to run this as a business and an open source project. not either, but both.

that said, i thought more on it last night, and i’ve decided to open source it. just going to be explicit in the README that i wont be offering support for anyone wanting to self host atm, just wasn’t built to be easy to self-host (external service dependencies and etc).

dannytatom··on Show HN: A simple way to send secrets between teammates
totally valid.

to be super candid, this isn’t open source because i don’t have the bandwidth to maintain/support another open source project. that may change as time goes on, though.

i get it’s a trade off, though, and i respect anyone not wanting to use it because of that.

I don't know enough about how GTP-3 and ML work to really answer this, but I think I'd be fine with what you're saying if I understand the question. If they provided (and charged) for the infrastructure, but the model was FOSS and community-driven, it would be less icky I think.

I just don't like the idea of taking people's work (without asking or checking licenses) and then selling it back to them. It'd be like if Stack Overflow decided to start charging to see answers and not asking or giving a split to the person who gave the answer. I realize they aren't just copy/pasting so not a perfect parallel, but still.

dannytatom··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
I've enjoyed using it for free, but not sure it's worth the $10/mo yet. When it works great, it's a nice-to-have for speeding up development but has yet to give me anything I wouldn't be able to just write myself. And when I wish it would give me the answer to something I don't know how to do, it spits out something very wrong.

Also feels kind of icky to train on open source projects and then charge for the output.

dannytatom··on Blender 3.2
dreaming for the day blender has more support for 2d animation. software like toon boom harmony are way too expensive for hobbyist work and there aren't many alternatives for that paper cutout type of animation.
dannytatom··on Blender 3.x roadmap
i hope they eventually add more support for 2D in the style of toonboom or after effects. being able to draw with vectors, create puppets, and then animate them. 2d animation is sorely lacking when it comes to open source software.

i got decisor, which i think is a word?

wiktionary says its obsolete but i think that still counts as existing? lol https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/decisor

dannytatom··on The Rocks and Minerals of Minecraft
you can make a creeper farm to automate gunpowder, that part is easy. the hard part is that sand isn't renewable. a lot of tech servers (scicraft being the biggest) just use tnt duping to do it until mojang makes sand renewable. i think that's the only "cheating" they do and it's kinda understandable cause otherwise it's impossible to get a lot of tnt.

dannytatom··on A No. 1 hit vanished from Poland’s charts – it’s not going quietly
whatever the answer, it has 0 to do with the topic and is just parent comment showing their bias for no real reason.
dannytatom··on textfiles.com
i miss that site, hella nostalgia just hearing the name.
dannytatom··on Zoom needs to clean up its privacy act
that doesn't mention the `without noticing` part, which is the creepy not good part. sounds like it's just saying the administrators get a list of currently running meetings and can join them if they want without being invited. doesn't say they're hidden or anything.
dannytatom··on Tailwind UI
I don't think it's really in competition for Bootstrap. Bootstrap is a set of common components and a grid system. Tailwind is a set of utility classes to build your own components.
dannytatom··on A Graph of Related Subreddits
This has a similar issue to the way Reddit recommends subs itself. A sub will be considered similar if it's the exact opposite due to users of one sub going to another to shitpost or brigade or etc.

I'm not sure of a fix for that, but would it be possible/helpful to weigh it by average upvote/downvote of the comments left from users of said sub? Meaning if sub A is about how much baseball sucks, and sub B is about how amazing baseball is, while determining if the 2 are similar you'd find out most posts from sub A to sub B are heavily downvoted and so probably not similar.

- stripe: https://stripe.com/restricted-businesses

"Pornography and other obscene materials (including literature, imagery and other media) depicting nudity or explicitly sexual acts; sites offering any sexually-related services such as prostitution, escorts, pay-per view, adult live chat features; sexually oriented items (e.g., adult toys); adult video stores and sexually oriented massage parlors; gentleman’s clubs, topless bars, and strip clubs; sexually oriented dating services"

- paypal: https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/article/faq569

"We don’t permit PayPal account holders to buy or sell: Sexually oriented digital goods or content delivered through a digital medium. Downloadable pictures or videos and website subscriptions are examples of digital goods. Sexually oriented goods or services that involve, or appear to involve, minors. Services whose purpose is to facilitate meetings for sexually oriented activities."

- amazon: https://pay.amazon.com/help/6023

"Adult Oriented Products and Services — includes pornography (including child pornography), sexually explicit materials (in all media types such as Internet, phone, and printed materials), dating services, escort services, or prostitution services."

so on and so forth. it's questionable whether this site would break those rules, since they aren't directly selling anything. otoh, it's likely the payment processors would shut them down and so probably not worth the risk.

dannytatom··on Launch HN: Buy Me a Coffee (YC W19) – Give your audience a way to thank you
like someone else said, it's likely not up to them. i had looked into starting a market place for that kinda stuff, since they're constantly kicked off of every other platform. but almost no payment processor allows you to do it.
dannytatom··on Disney+ hit by technical glitches on launch day
why would you believe that, though? why do you have an innate right to someone else's work?
dannytatom··on Launch HN: SharpestMinds (YC W18) – Online Community for AI Devs
Not a clue, I'm bad at names lol. Sharp Minds would probably be fine, just Sharpest Minds makes it sound like you're talking down to anyone who isn't involved in AI (which is like 99.99999999% of people).

Or if it was a clever reference to something in AI that made you sound smart but because it was a clever reference comes off more funny than rude.

dannytatom··on Launch HN: SharpestMinds (YC W18) – Online Community for AI Devs
Not to sound rude or anything, but the name is kinda douchey and outputting.
dannytatom··on KotCity – an open-source city simulation game written in Kotlin
> People don't really need another city sim.

Why do you say that? There's not really a ton of them out there compared to RPGs, FPSs, etc.

dannytatom··on IOTA: Cannot be used for IoT, loss of funds may occur
Nano is the first crypto I've been really excited about that's just a currency, and a hold quite a bit of it. Would love your opinion (or a post) on it. It's still fairly new and there hasn't been enough thought out criticism.
dannytatom··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
right lol. it doesn't matter if a vote is required, it's still fucked to go against 99% of the american public.

dannytatom··on Switching From React To Vue.js
Vue (+ ESLint) give pretty clear errors when you've messed up that make it quick to fix.

But yea, I mean I think it's subjective for most people. I'm not sure there's any real reason to go one or the other outside of developer happiness (could be wrong, though). A big part of Vue is to have a low learning curve and be less opinionated. So it feels more like enhancing your workflow (either in existing apps or new ones) than adopting a whole new way of doing things. I'm just personally more into that.

Also, for what it's worth, you can use JSX with Vue. The only downside I can think of is any time you have a problem it might be hard to find solutions since most people stick to directives. If you already know JSX, though, that might not be an issue.

dannytatom··on Switching From React To Vue.js
Actually the opposite for me, and the original reason I went with Vue (tho after using it more I like a lot about it). I just do not get the appeal of JSX. Directives are meh, but I still prefer it to JSX.

dannytatom··on Ask HN: Thoughts on Meteor.js?
Where are you finding paid gigs for it? I'm a freelance rails dev right now doing meteor stuff on the side and wouldn't mind doing some real work with it.
