danparsonson··on The great butter and cheese fire of 1991
If it were my decision I would have found two gigantic slices of bread and made the world's biggest cheese sandwich - think of the tourism revenue!

danparsonson··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
And there's not room for everyone? If we say something nice about a fictional character then we're in some way devaluing real people? I don't follow.
danparsonson··on Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes
Yes I can see that; sadly I'm no expert in helping people in your situation but I hope you find your way out - it's truly a terrible thing to be a prisoner of your own mind. Wish you all the best.
danparsonson··on Landline phones will switch off across Britland in 100 days, no extensions
That small and diminishing fraction are among the most vulnerable in society and therefore most likely to need a simple, reliable phone service that they understand how to use in an emergency.
danparsonson··on Landline phones will switch off across Britland in 100 days, no extensions
My grandparents - and I imagine many people of their generation would assume that if their power failed, they could still pick up the phone and dial someone to get help, as they always could in the past. Not to mention that, at least in the case of my family, they may have a mobile phone but that doesn't necessarily mean they can remember how to use it.
danparsonson··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
Alternatively you could address the substance of the comment instead of making some appeal to authority. Why do Gorbachev, Gandhi or Mandela stand in opposition to the points being made in the article?
danparsonson··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
I guess most people assume that working to build Data didn't involve all the secondary harms such as environmental and economic damage. It's also not clear to me that we are in fact working in that direction - so far the people in charge of our current AI efforts seem more interested in enriching themselves than building something that is a net positive for humanity.

Don? Is that you?
danparsonson··on Surviving "The Graduate"
How do you learn if not by making mistakes? If you weren't ever failing, wouldn't that mean you also were not learning?

As tough as it is, I think it's best for your development to be in a space where you're screwing up regularly.

danparsonson··on Patrick Stewart has died
A really beautiful episode and apparently one of his favourites. That moment at the end where he realises what's happening - "Oh, it's me! I'm the one it finds!" - so touching and such a wonderful performance.

> Agents dragged Pretti to the ground as he tried to fight them off. Multiple agents worked to detain him.

... and then shot him dead. I recommend an alternative source than the Daily Mail, it's a sensationalist rag.

Wow you must really like them
danparsonson··on Clinical trial of a prion disease drug candidate begins enrolling participants
That's a little like saying broken pottery is the more correct form of plates. What you're describing is the lower energy/higher entropy state, and yes everything heads in that direction because of thermodynamics. In general, life is a temporary state of higher energy achieved in exchange for waste in the surrounding environment; prions are useless because they are disordered not in spite of that.
danparsonson··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
You could be mistaken for that

danparsonson··on Jellyfin 12.0
OK, I understand now; you mean Jellyfin is only used by your family, because you prefer to use the CLI instead. I didn't parse it that way initially.

danparsonson··on The Two Abstractions of System Design: Hide or Reduce
Ah OK, got it - thanks for the clarification
danparsonson··on GPT-6 Astra
Have you ever worked directly with customers? Even those paying huge amounts of money for custom software usually don't know what they really need. They usually know their problems, but even then it can still require a lot of exploration to get to the core of it all, and then design an appropriate solution; not to mention having a good awareness of how software actually intersects with real life rather than how a non-technical customer imagines it does.

I know we're getting closer to robots that can do all that but I don't believe we're there yet.

danparsonson··on US Military disables ad trackers on troops' phones
Well you're right, "goon" is a value judgement, but if someone's critical thinking extends no further than 'bad word therefore bad argument' then I'm not sure I could reach them in any case.
danparsonson··on The Two Abstractions of System Design: Hide or Reduce
That just sounds like a tower of abstraction to me; the 'primitives' are whatever you're building the current layer on top of. The filesystem becomes the primitive when you want to fopen something. Perhaps I'm over simplifying? I still don't see a division into two classes of abstraction.
danparsonson··on The Two Abstractions of System Design: Hide or Reduce
> Modularity abstraction aspires to hide the interleavings and present operations as if they were atomic. Its goal is to make the module easy to use, but in doing so it forgoes exposing concurrency or efficiency opportunities.

> In stark contrast, the modeling abstraction is about identifying what should leak and leveraging it! It exposes the fine-grained actions and orderings, and proves that invariants hold despite the interleavings. The payoff for this work is to harvest the maximum safe concurrency from the system.

I guess I don't understand the argument here because those just sound like two different flavours of the same custard to me; the difference is just the balance of work you're doing on each side of the interface, and that decision depends on use cases specific to the project.

This feels more like it's making a point about system design? Abstraction is abstraction - you can apply it at different levels within a project, and a big part of building skills in software development is in learning to zoom in and out and nail the abstraction at each stage, but ultimately you're doing the same thing over and over. I don't personally think we need categories of it.

danparsonson··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
That's a great comment! Tying ones shoelaces without the aid of modern technology is not just old-fashioned (em dash) it's a key differentiator that highlights the growing divide between the generations in the age of generative AI!

etc.

What a time to be alive
