This is totally useless. Coverage is almost entirely by a single individual in each area and the colour coding changes every time you scroll and zoom, and doesn’t even make sense when you’re static.

You’ve extrapolated my “couldn’t give two shits about work” to “he cares about nothing in this world”.

There’s plenty I’m in control of and have autonomy over. Whether or not my current corporate masters decide to TUPE me again to the next set of cunts isn’t one of them.

Do you ever find yourself thinking about something deeply and then someone appears (it could be a child… for me it usually is) and asks you a question completely unconnected to whatever it was you were thinking about, and then - this is the bit that astonishes me - you find yourself answering the question verbally, maybe almost in full before you even re-focus your attention on the little person and whatever it was they asked ?

When I experience this it’s like the conceptual formulation and language expression part of my brain is quite happy to run itself for a few moments before I - the qualia of being me - has decided to experience that moment.

Utterly bonkers. I love it when it happens. It gets me thinking about how weird language and knowledge and consciousness really are.

Nope, I’m old, with family, been jobless recently.

Experience has taught me that investing the OP’s amount of emotional capital into your job leads to unhappiness.

Well, I don’t have that luxury ! I’m old, I do have a family to support, and I’ve been out of work for 6 months at a time recently, under financial pressure.

I still feel the same way.

> That first meeting crushed my soul. I heard my ears ring more violently than ever. The color drained from the world. I could barely walk straight.

There was a time that I really cared about my work and about my colleagues livelihoods.

Then I realised, it’s just a job. I’ve lost jobs before. I’ve taken shitty, low paid jobs before. It’s just a job. You turn up, they pay you, then you go home to your actual life, the one that matters.

People take their jobs too seriously.

I dunno if that works or is any less confusing, to be honest.

I don’t think there’s any process or entity in the physical world that is reasonably familiar to most people that is even remotely suitable as an analogy to public key cryptography.

danw1979··on Splash-free urinals (2025)
The recent introduction, in the UK at least, of splash-back reducing urinal … mats (?) has basically solved the problem in my opinion. They’re a disposable (but not single use…) plastic freshening insert with loads of short rubber strands, closely packed.

You can pee on one of these mats and the stream almost aerates itself on impact and you get basically no splashback, I guess with a similar mechanism to how an aerating tap produces a stream of water that doesn’t splash off whatever it hits.

My favourite thing about the command key is the position - it’s way further to the right than ctrl on most keyboards, which means you don’t have to contort your thumb back and apply lateral pressure to your thumb joint when copy-pasting.

I’m either doing it wrong on Windows or the entire world is putting up with unnecessary finger pain because whoever chose Ctrl-C was a masochist.

danw1979··on Show HN: Buslens – where can I get to by bus? (UK)
This is really cool as a way to determine which directions and how far you can go from a given point.

I think a good improvement to this tool would be an optional “number of connections” plus desired maximum walking distance. That’d be really useful for your average OAP trying to find a rough plan for a long distance journey by bus.

danw1979··on Qwen 3.6 is now much easier to run locally on your Mac, thanks to JetBrains
How is this easier than using lmstudio or omlx or whatever your favourite runtime is ?

It’s maybe a bit interesting that Jetbrains are making moves to integrate with local models more closely, but I think claiming this is “easier” is incorrect for most users.

danw1979··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
At least here in the UK, recent revisions to the default planning rules around heat pumps (“Permitted Development” legislation) removed the restriction that an install be “used solely for heating purposes” and revised this to “not be used solely for the purpose of cooling”.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant also permits cooling - it’s based on the heating credentials of a unit only.

So in Britain at least, installing cooling systems in private residences seems to be getting easier.

danw1979··on Coin-sized device can hack a Boeing 737
Interesting take on things - of course “outside” airside was protected by locked doors, so passengers couldn’t just wander onto the apron… but all you’ve got to do to get outside these days is to book with the sort of airline that’s too cheap to pay for a proper stand and makes you walk to the plane (and accidentally walk the wrong way, etc)…

Another question on my mind is - how hard is it to land a job with an airside pass nowadays if your intention is to just get physical access to an aeroplane ? Pretty easy back then. Not sure about now…

danw1979··on Coin-sized device can hack a Boeing 737
I started my career proper as a junior network engineer for a regional British airline (British Midland, since subsumed by BA) in 2001, just before 9/11 continuing for 3 years until mid 2004. Throughout that time, I held an airside pass at LHR that allowed me to get pretty much anywhere I liked, apart from the taxiways and runways of course.

This was pretty standard for most staff - once you’re airside, there were not many restrictions about getting down under the ramp or anywhere around an aircraft on a stand.

Never was this illustrated better than the final homecoming of a BA Concorde in late 2003, when a whole load of staff from different roles across the airport all piled out onto the edge of the apron to wave it home.

A junior IT bod in a high-vis touching something on the outside of an aircraft ? Wouldn’t stand out to anyone watching a CCTV feed. Maybe the other ramp staff would notice, but if you timed it right…

What I’m trying to say is that physical access to aeroplanes even at a place like LHR was pretty much open to anyone who holds an airside pass.
