darkfloo··on Retired decorator's Pokémon cards sell for £1.5M
My understanding is that Pokémon is surprisingly cheap if you want to actually play the game as they reprint staples to oblivion (often <100$ for tier one decks). It’s all collection based , which in and of itself is not necessarily an indictment on the value of Pokémon cards, but is much closer to greater fool theory than I’m comfortable with .
darkfloo··on GPT-6 Astra helped me jailbreak my Kindle
Very few non first party game where worth playing on the ds if you had access to anything else to be honest, at least when I was a kid. I do wish we had actually pocketable ish consoles from the big 3, but it seems like this market is covered by android devices.
darkfloo··on Why were Victorian elites so effective?
I mean seriously people are defending Victorian England as if an entire genra of art (social realism) was not created to describe the horrors of industrialism at the time.

Just look at estimated work hours for the common worker in the before vs after time. (https://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/users/rauch/worktime/hours_...)

Yes there was huge progress and wealth created. But ignoring the plight of the every man at the time is just not a good way to look at history imo.

Otherwise every single period in history was good , because rich people were comfortable at all time throughout history.

darkfloo··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
Doesn’t decapping chips require hydrofluoric acid ? If so I cannot express enough respect, the one person I’ve interacted with that regularly worked with it put the fear of god with by showing what one insignificant miss for anything else did to his finger
darkfloo··on DoltLite: A SQLite fork with Git-style version control, built with 2k agent PRs
What problems does a version controlled database solves that is not solved by proper table auditing ?
darkfloo··on Reviving a four year old reMarkable 2
Because the fact that it is a tech gadget makes me more likely to write stuff down instead of believing I can remember everything. That’s about it , at least for my use case
darkfloo··on Late Bronze Age Collapse
Shameless plug for my favourite YouTuber of all time https://youtu.be/aq4G-7v-_xI?si=GviYcvEtOAJ1mln7
darkfloo··on Facebook Has a Health Scam Problem
It’s only a problem for Facebook if they get prosecuted, so far it’s a problem problem for Facebook users(a very bad one to be clear). I’d love to believe they will be dragged in front of a court, but it’s unclear to me what could be charged , unless they are knowingly involved.
darkfloo··on How to get better at guitar
I’m French, this is definitely not an urban legend, for some unknown reason « wrongly » spoken French sounds especially grating to me and all the other French people I know. We might not say it to your face , but it is extremely hard to ignore. I wonder if it’s the same with other Latin languages, or if it is just some consequence of years of forced standardisation of the French accent.
darkfloo··on Recent discoveries on the acquisition of the highest levels of human performance
Can also offer anecdotal support from esports I know about (League of Legends , StarCraft 2, and counterstrike) For StarCraft 2 the best historical players are all child prodigies , same for Formula 1 , all recent World Champions are child prodigies
darkfloo··on From sci-fi to reality: Researchers realise quantum teleportation using tech
Anyone better at physics than me willing to explain how this does not break general relativity ? I might be missing the point of the experiment completely to be fair
darkfloo··on Tech megacaps lose $770B in value as Nasdaq suffers steepest drop since April
Yes , this is fundamentally an incomplete view , Japan index peaked in 1989 before peaking in again this year, if you bought at the peak it would have taken you 35 years to recover your money. Past performance is not indicative of future performance
darkfloo··on Show HN: A roguelike game that runs inside Notepad++
It was always pretty nebulous, relevant video by DoshDoshington https://youtu.be/FT6XfaHgyh0?si=xayqzhkkmYjB4_UC
darkfloo··on Rising young worker despair in the United States
That only works if rates don’t go up which is probably not a good premise to rely on
darkfloo··on uv downloads overtake Poetry for Wagtail users
As a semi casual user of python that had to battle w/ dependency management recently, can you elaborate on why that would not be a good thing ? I thought about switching our project to uv but could not find the time necessary
darkfloo··on Cameras of 1930s Era
Medium to some extent and large format can produce some exceptional image quality (Sharpness, details and contrast). Cliché at this point but Ansel Adams work still look very modern today. They where however slow, heavy ,difficult to work with and extremely expensive so most people stuck to small format when they became available . In fact I would bet that most pictures taken before small format took over look better technically than after it took over
darkfloo··on Impact of Low Temperatures on the 5nm SRAM Array Size and Performance
Slightly unrelated but is there any way of maintaining that low of a temperature (77k and 10k according to the paper numbers) that does not immediately kill perf/w and perf/$ ? Otherwise might as well just buy more cpu
darkfloo··on Portland airport grows with expansive mass timber roof canopy
Planes are cheaper as a function of the infrastructure needed to allow their use (? Feel free to correct me). As long as we allow airplanes companies to not pay for the long term externalities that they are creating planes will stay cheaper.
darkfloo··on List of books that will induce a mindfuck
Iain M Banks use of weapon is both an incredibly good book and a portal to the culture series , in which almost all books are just as good.
darkfloo··on Boeing workers vote to strike
Do you have to pay taxes on dividend under American law ? If so I guess that makes stock buyback better from a point of view of shareholders
darkfloo··on Swiss watchmakers put employees on state-funded leave as luxury demand disappear
No? I’m sorry as much as I would like this to be true luxury watches are a sign of external wealth / conversation pieces for the wealthy (5/100M range I would guess)

Might not be the case for the tech wealthy crowd as I know these circles less

But for the traditional/family/business wealthy crowd watches are an easy icebreaker, especially if you mention you don’t care about the price and you like them for x other reasons

darkfloo··on Amazon Cloud Traffic Is Suffocating Fedora's Mirrors
Does torrent have addition overhead that regular hosting does not ?
