darod··on Cops Used Flock to Track a Man Across State Lines for a Pretextual Weed Search
is it legal for police to track your movements in a state they have no jurisdiction in?
darod··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
You can argue that reverse engineering anything is as hard if not harder than engineering something. I can’t imagine distillation is any different.
darod··on Apple's weird anti-nausea dots cured my car sickness
Just a note, be careful on your laptop in the front passenger seat. If you get into an accident, the airbag is pushing that device right towards your head.
darod··on AI makes you boring
"You don’t get build muscle using an excavator to lift weights. You don’t produce interesting thoughts using a GPU to think." Great line!
darod··on My coworker's 36 key Corne open-source keyboard setup
Curious have any of you tried the Charachorder? It's supposed to be the fastest "keyboard" to type on.
darod··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
It’s called marketing and value signaling. Doesn’t mean they believe what they spew.
darod··on Every champion needs a rival

darod··on Actions reflect your priorities
two tom brady posts on the front in one day?
darod··on Show HN: I made a tool to generate photomosaics with your pictures
why does this require uploading my photos? can't something like this run native?

darod··on In restaurants, We need a new way to signal that we're ready to pay
when the waiter first comes to the table, you listen for their name and remember it. at the end of the meal, you raise your hand, state their name and when they look your way, cross your two index fingers to indicate "close out".
darod··on AGI Is Still 30 Years Away – Ege Erdil and Tamay Besiroglu
is this because the LLM actually reasoned on a better design or because it found a better design in its "database" scoured from another tenured engineer.
darod··on Open guide to equity compensation
One thing not pointed out in the article, but I would like to hear others perspective on, is what happens at the 4 year mark when all options are fully vested and exercisable. This is a scenario for employees that have been there long-term. Should requests be made for further option grants? Should employers think about further option grants to retain employees? What are people’s thoughts and experiences?
darod··on Wall Street’s ‘Private Rooms’
Many comments are saying that these rooms have been created to give fund managers the ability to execute large trades while keeping the price similar or close to what is available on the open market. I guess my question is why should they should be allowed to be protected from this type of risk? If they were not protected from this large type of risk, then maybe we would have more competition in the large fund manager space because, like hedge funds have experienced, after managing a certain amount of money there is a diminishing return as others will see and follow your trend.
darod··on Stimulation Clicker
that was wild, kudos to you.
darod··on Boeing workers vote to strike
because they solve a lot of math problems very well.
darod··on Lessons from building nine startups in 2023
I appreciate the grit but don't align with the definition. One could argue that you made 1 startup with several products and the most successful one would be what you pivot to.
darod··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Not understanding the haterade with Minis. I’ve owned mine since 2015 and I’ve had no major issues. The engine is snappy, it handles great in cornering, easy to park, etc etc.
darod··on Days of Awe: The clinical trial drug that might save my husband's life
This is an interesting position to take. As someone who’s in the middle of chemotherapy I don’t think anyone’s in a position to judge me if I’m not interested in putting myself through this treatment anymore. They have no skin in the game and they’re not the ones having to deal with the side effects.

darod··on AI researcher Geoffrey Hinton thinks AI has or will have emotions
Wouldn't AI need a body to have emotions? Aren't many of the emotions that humans/animals feel based on sensors/sensations outside of the brain? We feel when we SEE/HEAR a threat and our instinct triggers to short circuit thinking in order to address it (fight or flight). An AI can think many iterations faster than humans and would have no use for this shortcut or need for a such sensors to feel unless maybe it had limited memory and were placed in a body and needed these short cuts to address low battery, physical threats, or the need to clone/propagate itself.
darod··on 15-20 more federal holidays
The author said medieval peasants ONLY worked 150 days a year. The average US worker is probably closer to 240-(8hr?) days a year of work. If you work more than 8 then I'm sure this figure would decrease. Additionally there are only so many hours that you can concentrate on a problem before you're useless yet we try to press on.
darod··on The Icelandic Art of Swim Lessons
MIT requires all students pass a swim test in order to graduate. It's only 100 yards though
darod··on Apple’s Vision Pro Is a $3,500 Ticket to Nowhere
Immersive FaceTime? How is this going to work well? The person you're talking to will be using their phone/tablet and where is your camera? If you use the continuity camera feature with an iphone, you're going to see their entire face without the headset and they're looking at someone with these goggles on. Not a good user experience IMO.
darod··on AI will save the world?
"Every child will have an AI tutor that is infinitely patient, infinitely compassionate, infinitely knowledgeable, infinitely helpful." - people use the internet so that they don't have to remember things. I'm not sure how this tutor will help because currently a lot of students are using AI to do their homework for them.
darod··on Vitamin D: Potent regulator of dopaminergic neuron differentiation and function
is the moral of the story that offices are killing us and that we need to go outside and sit in the sun for an hour of your day?
darod··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
thankfully TSA can only take your liquids and not your solids at the checkpoint, so you can theoretically buy/make a sandwich before you go to the airport.
darod··on Street fighting engineers vs. martial arts engineers
Sure, but no one is comparing a quarterback with a physicist or in this case a programmer. I just think that our field is developing descriptions of ourselves to over embellish what we actually do and it's not necessary. We sit behind computers, think, and write code. We're not swashbuckling, throwing stars, or grappling with opponents in the streets.
darod··on Street fighting engineers vs. martial arts engineers
first "code ninjas" now "street fighting" engineers and "martial art" engineers? really? I feel like these monikers are getting a little silly especially since you'd never see the reverse.
darod··on When Will AI Take Your Job?
If AI is solving everything and ultimately phasing workers out, then what exactly would you be educating your kids in? Human's limiting factor is the time that it takes them to learn something (18-27 years of education depending on the field). What job would be worth striving for? They'd be training for jobs that a future AI would be trying to phase out. This whole article just described how most of the the highest paid workers (doctors, lawyers, driving, logistics, film, music, radio, etc etc) would be automated. I don't know what you'd need a person for at that point. Feels like a race to the bottom.
